What’s Your Favorite Apple Dessert?/A Giveaway

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | September 28, 2012 520 Comments

Last updated on October 5th, 2012

UPDATE: congratulations to the two winners of the apple corer-peeler-slicer:
Ray Stokes, comment #221: “My favorite is spiced microwave apples…”
S. Taylor, comment #467: “Jeffrey Tolar’s famous apple caramel pie recipe…”

BECAUSE YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME, I’m giving away two apple-corer-peeler-slicers.  Read on, and I’ll explain more about this clever Shaker invention, and how you can enter for a chance to win one in my latest random drawing:

I can tell you the apple corer-peeler-slicer is a great time-saver.  You stick an apple on the gadget’s fork, and then turn a handle.

As the fork spins round and round, a little blade peels the apple.

The blade slices the apple, too, into a perfect spiral. I call this an “Apple Accordion.”  Or an “Apple Slinky.”

A slinky that you cut in half…

in order to achieve perfect-for-a-pie apple slices. Nifty, huh?

With practice, you can core, peel, and slice an apple in about 20 seconds. I speak from experience.

For a chance to win this useful device, just do the following:

In the comments section below, answer this question: “What’s your favorite apple dessert?”

Is it  La Tart Tatin? Apple Pie? Apple Crisp? A warm, crisp, and flaky Harvest Turnover? Okay, this last item contains bacon as well as apples. So some of you might not consider it a dessert. But it still qualifies, as do apple pancakes, and any other apple-icious dish you happen to mention.

I’ll use the little number gadget at Random (dot) org to select two winners. The winners will be notified by email.

Enter soon! This drawing expires on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at 11:59PM EST.

my favorite apple dessert is fried apple pies. they take me back to my grandmas kitchen when she would let me roll out the dough and place the cooked, seasoned apples on it and seal it with a fork. She would always tell me to be sure to poke a hole in the top then she would drop them in the hot oil to cook up brown and crispy.

My favourite apple dessert is lovely, warm, sugary, crumbly apple crisp warm from the oven, smelling of fall and cinnamon, with a scoop of lovely, cold, vanilla ice cream, the kind with little specks of vanilla in it, melting slowly over the top. I bet I am not alone.

Runner up? Canadian-ly idiosyncratic warm apple pie with cheddar cheese melted on it.

I took one bite and couldn’t put it down until the last morsel was gone. They are fit for a King/Queen! The Apples, Bacon and Cheese were a perfect combination. I made them with my Granny apples, off my tree and used Fresh & Easy British Brand bacon without nitrates. You have a Winner and the “Harvest Turnovers” are now my FAVORITE Apple recipe. Hat’s off to you!

I love a mix of different apples… granny smith, red delicious, pink lady… etc. for my Apple Cobbler. Just peel, slice and toss with sugar and cinnamon, place in a baking dish and top with a mixture of cold butter, oats, organic flour, sugar, pecans, and lots of roasted cinnamon. Bake until apples are tender and topping is golden. Simple? Yes. But oh, so tasty!

Apple pie for sure, love the smell of a fresh baked pie. I have about three dozen apple trees on my property. The trees are about 100 years old and need pruning badly to produce better apples. Any tips on pruning apple trees that have been pruned for over 20 years would be appreciated. Until I met my girlfriend Bea the apples were never used for anything other than feeding the deer over the fall and winter. Bea is a great cook and loves to bake for friends and family. We now have a use for the apples.

I just baked your Apple Crisp yesterday for my family’s monthly gathering, topping it off with fresh whipped cream I made with my hand-dandy immersion blender 🙂 . It was a huge hit, as you may have guessed. (I also made two huge pot roasts, garlic mashed red potatoes-peels on, steamed greeen beans and baked golden nuggest squash.) After peeling, coring and slicing 8 Braeburns, my hands ached, especially my knife-wielding one. PLEASE draw my name for the apple peeler!!!

Upside down pecan apple pie! Mix 1 cup chopped pecans with 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/3 cup melted butter, press into the bottom of pie pan. Cover with crust, toss in fresh apples cut in 1″ slices with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg. Top with another pie crust, cut holes in top to allow steam to escape. Cook 1 hour at 375. Put pie on cooling rack for 10 minutes. Cover with a plate, flip over so pie is on the plate and the pecans are on top. Cool 1 hour, if you can, before you eat it. This pie oozes crunchy awesomeness with the fresh apples.

Apples in Gowns! It is a variation of apple dumplings I suppose. Take a square of puff pastry, dot the inside with butter, sugar, cinnamon; place a cored and peeled apple in the middle sprinkle with brown sugar, cinnamon and butter; make a “purse” by joining the four corners together. Bake at 350 for about 50 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the juices are flowing from the apple.

I have in “quarantine” a bucket of bruised and bug damaged apples that are perfect for making Apple Crisps. There was a time i would have left those apples on the trees, or tossed them into the woods or compost bin, but it shocked me how much perfectly lovely, sweet apple flesh remains when the damaged parts are cut neatly away. It’s surgical, autumnal, and deeply satisfying.

I will note that my crisp recipe lacks the finesse of yours. I leave the skins on (so long as the skins are undamaged), and have no bottom crisp layer. But it’s scrumptious anyway, because really, one can’t go too terribly wrong with apples and cinnamon.

I already have a peeler, corer, slicer, (and I love this thing!) but wanted to take this opportunity to share my Apple Cake recipe. I get a lot of requests for this one.

4-5 apples (any kind will do) peeled, cored and cut up in small pieces
    5 tablespoons PLUS 2 1/2 cups sugar
    2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    4 large eggs
    1 cup vegetable oil
    1/4 cup orange juice
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    3 cups flour
    3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 12-cup bundt pan non-stick spray. (you need a large pan or this will end up dripping over onto the floor of your oven)

Mix the apple pieces, 5 tablespoons sugar and ground cinnamon in a large bowl. Set aside.

Combine 2 1/2 cups sugar, eggs, vegetable oil, orange juice, and vanilla extract in another large bowl (I use my KitchenAid for this). Blend. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt into eggs mixture.

Spoon 1 1/2 cups batter into prepared pan. Top with half of the apple mixture. Cover with 1 1/2 cups batter. Top with remaining apples, then with remaining batter.

Bake cake in preheated oven until top is golden brown and tester inserted near center comes out with moist crumbs attached, about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Cool cake in pan on wire rack for 15 minutes. Run knife around sides of pan and center tube to loosen. Turn cake out onto rack. Cool for 1 hour.

My favorite APPLE DESSERT is quite simple, and yet…..it opens a huge door to the most widely selections to choose fom, and…..at any moment. I call it, “Kentucky Fried Apples”. Here’s why: At Apple harvest season, I take my favorite fresh apples, clean, wash, peel, and de-core them. Gently saute them in a small amount of butter, sprinkle a tad of sugar, honey, maple syrup, brown sugar, or whatever you prefer, and cook until tender. Now comes the best part. Cool this apple mix and then place in freezer containers like, Zip Lock boxes and place in hour freezer until needed for a wide variety of delicious desserts such as, Apple Pie, Apple Cake, Apple Sauce over Vanilla Ice Cream, Apple Muffins, Apple Yogurt, Apple Crumble, Apples Fritters, Apple Pop Overs. With this basic Apple Mixture, you’r free to use your imagination and add goodies such as, chopped walnuts or Pecans, Raisins, Currants, or Dates, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, or Cardamon to create the Dessert of your choice at any moment weeks or months down the road. It’s a, ~win-win~. I like that!

I don’t need one of these as I already have one, but I can tell you it is fantastic if you have a lot of apples to process, or even just a few. When my kids were small (19 & 21 now) we used to go to the orchard to pick apples as a family outing. They loved it! I bought one of these and it was a lifesaver, well hand and wrist saver, LOL!
I also works well with potatoes to make “curly fries” and then you just drop the “core” into your oil also.
Oh, and my favorite apple recipe: well I have 3; Dutch apple pie, homemade apple butter and homemade apple fried pies. Yummy!
Good luck to the winner. You will wonder why you never got one before now!

I’ve look for a apple pealer in past and have tried several but I haven’t seen or found the one you are showing, looks like the real answer to my search. My friends next door sure would be happy if won the pealer so they wouldn’t have to peal all the apples, that’s the only way they get apple turnovers or a hot apple pie. lol

I must share this story with everyone. Fourteen years ago when I started dating my now wife, we were driving in the mountains of NC and ran across a farmer bringing in his apples straight from his trees, keep in mind Gina is from another country and had never bake before in her life. She insisted we get a bushel of apples so she could learn to bake an apple pie. The farmer was so taken by Gina he provide his grandmother recipe. Boy was she excited, so the next morning I had to leave, when I came back home Gina was in tears, not because she had flour everywhere, she had pealed the whole bushel of apple and didn’t know how long to cook them and they turn to apple sauce, “4+ gallons”. I try to calm her down, and the more I tried the more she cried, she said the only way for her to stop was for us to go back to the farmer so she could ask him and his wife questions about the cook time of apples. This was around noon that day, so off we go again to find the farmer, it was about a 3 hr drive to find him and she cried most of the way, but we made it. He welcomed all her questions and provided her with another bushel of apples free for her to try again with the promise she would bring him and his wife an apple pie. Gina had made enough pie crust for 10 pies and placed them in the freezer, so she didn’t have to go do that again. She peal almost the whole bushel again, but cooked just enough for two pies in case she messed up. We had guess coming to dinner that night and after dinner the brought out an apple pie I believe had to be the most picture perfect pie I had ever seen, and the taste was just out of this world. Now she knows how to bake an apple pie and insist on doing so when apples are in season. The next morning she is up and baking another apple pie for us to take to the farmer and his wife. We sit and enjoyed the afternoon eating apple pie and her learning all she could from his wife. Now we stop by offen to say hello and have a few laughs together.

The activity director said we were going to have spiral ham as the main course (Opportunities, the name of our place) always furnishes this the main dish and we bring dishes to compliment it. I saw your receipe for the Harvest Turnovers and thought this would be ideal. Guess what, this 74yo broad made 26 turnovers. I had to peel and core each one by hand. It wasn’t easy, but I did it. THEY TURNED OUT WONDERFULLY !! (not bragging, just telling the truth). I’m still getting compliments and this happened last Tuesday!!!! I did go ahead and make the filling on Sunday so I wouldn’t be so bogged down Tuesday morning having to do all of it at the same time. For those little pieces of less-than-perfect apple, I make chunky applesauce. On the stove all the end pieces go in a pan with butter, sugar and apple pie spice. Reduce down until you can’t stand it any longer and have to eat some. I can speak with great authority this is divine over vanilla ice cream, or from a spoon standing over the sink. it works well on pancakes, oatmeal, Mueslix… You will wish you had more of those half bruised apples. It freezes well too.

Hi Kevin! I’ve made your apple crisp 4 times since we picked apples 3 weeks ago and will make it again tonight. It is divine and we all adore it! My grandmother’s apple pie was to die for also, but I think the crumble top of a crisp is so much easier, it really rocks. I didn’t tell you that the first time I made it, I ate spoonsful of the brown sugar, butter flour, oatmeal mix and almost made myself sick, it was soooo good :). Kevin, I love this peeler and think we need one in our kitchen. Did I miss where you purchased it? Happy Fall!
