The Big Kitchen Project is underway! For the south and west walls of the room, I’ve selected new cabinets, counter tops, sink, and drop-in gas range. Now — and this is rather urgent — I must select a pair of electric wall ovens. But which brand/model to buy? I hope you’ll share your recommendations in the comments field below. Meanwhile, here’s a mock-up of the new design:
Old Kitchen:I’m keeping the work station I currently have, but outfitting it with electricity. The gas oven/range combo will be donated, and the refrigerator will be moved to the east wall.
Kari Davala (the kitchen design specialist at Lowe’s) created this mock-up of the “new” kitchen. Notice the pair of wall ovens? I need to select them, and quickly too. The cabinets are arriving in a couple of weeks!
So tell me about your own electric wall oven. From reports I’ve read, some are equipped with very loud fans. I’m hoping to find a quiet model.
I look forward to reading your thoughts/reviews!
xKevin

I’m not familiar with wall ovens Kevin, but I can tell you don’t buy Samsung or LG. Stick with the company that make appliances only.
Brenda Johnson says
I am no help to you with your wall oven quest, but can’t wait to see your kitchen when it’s finished!!!
Cindy says
I second Suzin’s comment. I was told by a Sears repairman who knows first hand that any appliances made by Samsung or LG after 2010 is junk. He recommends only buying Frigidaire or Whirlpool but I’m not sure they make ovens.
Lori Rose says
If I ever have another opportunity to build or remodel a kitchen, a french door oven is at the top of my list. They easily open with one hand and you do not have to lift a heavy pot or unwieldy pan over the oven door – they are especially nice for those of us who are vertically challenged!
Amber Goss says
If you’re doing electrical, consider installing 2 separate ovens rather than a double. The single power source on a double oven isn’t enough power to run them both hot at once. If you have 2 ovens then they run 2 circuits and you can run them both hot. Learned this too late from our electrician. You might be able to find a double that would take 2 circuits.
And yes some are loud. Our double oven was highly rated but runs the fan loudly forever until it’s cool.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Amber – The cabinet I purchased will house two separate ovens. I’m trying to avoid the oven with the loud fan that seems to run forever. Surely there are some quiet ovens!
Tonya Rust says
When we built years ago I had double ovens as well as a Jenn Air with oven. I loved our good old GE. Back in the 70’s when things were not computerized and junk. Cooked real even. I have gas oven now but would live to have electric

Excited for you about the new kitchen! I agree with the advice to stick with an appliance-only company brand. My double ovens in the California house are Chambers, so I am afraid I am of not much help as they went out of business many years ago. These ovens still look fabulous and are top notch performers still going strong after 32 years. Have always maintained perfect temperature readings. Look for a company with a proven track record is my advice.
Jess says
Another vote for 2 separately wired ovens. We have Electrolux and I love them… and for someone within 5 miles of Whirlpool/Jennaire/Maytag/Kitchenaid headquarters it is a big deal to stray from the brands that support a lot of employees in our area.
I like the blue interior, but that is purely cosmetic :-). The roll-out racks are one of the best things I’ve ever used, operation is easy, and I don’t find the fans overly noisy. We previously had 2 full size wall ovens, and we opted to go for one oven and one convection microwave (separate appliances, both Electrolux). The oven has a bread proofing option for days when it is cold and I don’t have extra time to let things rise, convection, non-convection, and lots of other features I don’t use.
The microwave can be used as a microwave or a small oven that we can bake/broil in. We use it a lot like a toaster oven for reheating pizza or melting cheese on things. I’ve never baked a pan of brownies or anything like that, but it says you can.
Our kitchen is not single branded like many people do, we also have a Bosch induction range, Whirlpool dishwasher, and Maytag fridge – it all depended on reviews and price-points.

just put in 2 separate frigidaire ovens. they use only a #10 wire each with a 30 amp breaker and are quiet. if you would like to save some money (a lot of money} let me know and I will tell you who to call. wyndham

Do not get Thermador ovens. Racks are bad, takes forever to heat up, touch pad for temp, time, etc very hard to press. I believe it is to make them child proof, but tough for an adult. Also, will give month, date an year which is completely useless but can’t have timer give time in seconds less than a minute.

Hi Kevin,
The new layout looks fantastic! Very excited for you. We sprung for a Miele wall oven and I love it. Quiet, cleans easily and cooks like dream. Also, I noticed that you have space under your wall ovens – we put a warming drawer in that space and it’s incredibly handy – especially when entertaining. Just a thought.

I just went through this. We had an old GE Profile double oven which I loved and should have kept. We replaced it with Wolf which has that beautiful blue interior and roll out racks but it takes some (a lot) getting used to. If I could do it again I would get the GE Profile. Good luck.

Hi Kevin! We finished a complete kitchen remodel last November. We have all Jennair and I am liking my double ovens! As far a the noisy fan, it seems to not be that bad and does shut off quickly. We have the one with only one fan but they make a double fan which the guy said is better for convection. One thing you may want to consider is a steam oven! I am learning how to use it but so far it’s amazing. If you do look at them, I would recommend a plumbed one as it’s a bit of a pain to wipe out the water after cooking. And there are lots of recipes for combi steam ovens, which I don’t have, and not much for the jennair. If I could do it again I would get a miele. But I would for sure include a steam oven in a new kitchen again! Good luck!

I hate to diss an American company but we have had nothing but trouble with our 15 y.o. Viking gas cooktop and 36” wall oven. Poor customer service from the factory, dearth of repair people who know what they are doing and parts that needed to be replaced sooner than expected – like ALL the temperature sensors in the oven (thank goodness my husband could do that himself). The cook top was once removed and taken to the shop to remedy the darned clicking of the electronic ignition that just wouldn’t quit. That being said, we have been happy with the Bosch 30” electric wall oven but that doesn’t get as much use because electricity is the higher cost option in our area.
Cathy Olson says
We just built a new home and put GE double ovens. We are very happy with them and they are not too loud. Can’t wait to see your new kitchen when completed!

I have a very old Magic Chef. It had all the bells and whistles on it and I loved it, even bought the frig that would match. Got it at an auction for $100.00. But it lost the temp. somehow, after about 20 years. I put $$$ into it because the new ones are so plain.
Susan says
Love the idea of seperately wired ovens. I would guess that would make it possible to replace just one if necessary. My top oven is convection. Yes, noisy when cooling, but I love convection for baking. Who am I kidding? I always use the convection setting. Lower oven is not convection, thus a bit deeper for that turkey roaster. No firm brand recommendation.
I would make the counter on the island extra deep, if possible.

Hi Kevin, we did a complete kitchen remodel about five years ago, and we went with the GE monogram line. We did a new type of new oven offered at that time, for the top part of our two oven area. The top oven is called the “Advantium” and it is both a microwave and a speed cook oven all in one. So you can choose which feature you need. The thing I love about it, is that it has a bread proofer, and a speed cook which is an amazing way to cook things quickly. My kids do their chicken tenders in there, which makes them crispy and Oven cooked in just a couple minutes, and I can do baked potatoes in under five minutes. We did the entire kitchen suite by GE monogram, which included the advantium , a wall oven, freestanding oven/burners on top, Built in refrigerator and the dishwasher. We’ve had great luck with everything. If you’d like to see a photo, I would just need an email address for you and I could send you a photo of our kitchen remodel, which I think turned out great.
Good luck to you on your kitchen remodel, it’s a lot of fun but also very expensive and stressful 🙂

Hi Kevin
We have just redone our kitchen and are very happy with the outcome. You will find out that many of the big brand names are made by the same companies and look similar. We purchased all Kitchenaid appliances and really love them all: gas stove top (5 burner), french door fridge, wall oven (on bottom) with wall Convection/Microwave (on top), dishwasher. I really love all the appliances but especially the dishwasher which is very quiet and so much better and faster than our old Bosch. Because we got everything in a package deal there was a large discount. You mentioned Lowes….Do they sell their own models of the Brand name appliances? I caution against this and think it better to buy the regular standard models of the Brand names. Your local appliance dealer should be able to research a good deal for you and will service it all down the road too.
Buying an appliance at a discount or outlet store is sort of like buying a “Polo” shirt at the outlet mall. It is made just for them and not the “real thing”. Good luck with your kitchen and I will look forward to seeing it on your videos.

I have a convection microwave oven!!! LOVE it! Its a microwave when you want one but its also a convection oven when you want one. You can roast, bake or broil in it…… Or you can zap in it.
Two ovens in one – whats better than that?

When our 3 Year old top of the line kitchen aid dishwasher began leaking after less than 3 years we called the plumber. He said don’t buy any appliance other than a Bosch or Miele. They are more expensive but will last. All of the others are made by the same manufacturer but have different names put on them. Good luck with your hunt. Your kitchen is beautiful. Happy Easter.

I had a double electric Kitchen Aid wall oven for many years. I did not have trouble with uneven heating in them when using both at the same time. I baked for a small bookstore cafe out of my home using them every night.
One oven was convection and the usefulness of the roasting setting on it was a pleasant surprise.
If I could fit a double wall oven in this home I would do it in a heartbeat. Good luck with you remodel and all the decisions.

I love my Kenmore 49532 30″ Self-Clean Double Electric Wall Oven w/ Convection ovens installed last October. Another brand was being promoted, however when using the self-clean option many owners reported the electronics died. Since I love self-cleaning ovens that was a deal breaker for me. Both the top and bottom ovens are self-cleaning.
I checked the owner reviews on the Kenmore and found many satisfied people. I’ve used the self-cleaning function and all went well. I have yet to learn to use the convection option.
I do have to plan ahead because it takes a bit longer for the ovens to reach temperature.

We bought Electrolux ovens 5 years ago and loved them … until they broke at year 4. First one oven broke, so we replaced it with another Electrolux so they would match. The newer ovens racks are different. There is only one sliding rack and it is very challenging to move. The fan on the newer oven is VERY loud. 3 months after the first oven broke, the second oven broke. Different problems. Neither problem was repairable. These ovens were on the expensive side of ovens. I would not purchase these ovens again. I would buy whatever Consumers Reports or your local repairman recommends.
Wendie says
We too have had nothing but trouble with our 18 year old Viking ovens. The gas cook top has been great however. We are considering a new build so everyone’s recommendations are very helpful!
Betty says
I recommend reviewing the DACOR line. My DACOR is 15 years old and has never had a problem. Does bake, convection bake, broil, convection broil, and pure convection. It has convection as it was designed to be…not just a fan moving the single heat source around.
Good luck with your search!

I have a double Kitchenaide with blue interior and lovely slideout racks and all the bells and whistles. Both are convection ovens and either can use the probe. You can program them. The door glass is huge and with the light on you really CAN see what is happening. But it does have the fairly noisy fan when it says “oven cooling down.” I asked why and was told it was to protect all the electronics. I don’t see how—the oven can run for a long time.
My only trouble is the timer. You have to hit Timer on the touch pad, then the time, then Timer again. I have set it for four hours when I wanted four minutes, I have inadvertedly changed the oven temp, and by forgetting to touch Timer a second time I have not set it st all when I thought I had done so. So I use my cube timer when possible or another freestanding timer.
When my mother got a new oven in 1990 she had a wooden sign made and hung it on the house, to name her “estate.” She called it “Singing Ovens.”
Diane says
My husband used to own a catering company. When designing our kitchen, he was adamant that our wall ovens had to be big enough for his supersized equipment. Also, convection bake had to be an option. He loves the JennAir double ovens. My only problem is that we got them in black. They work great, but every speck of dust is screamingly obvious. My point: JennAir is fantastic; don’t get black kitchen appliances.

Love the WINDOW! Great computer-generated view! So much brighter and fun to see the world outside – probably a view of your gardens etc. As you stand at your counter, please note that the recessed lights should shine onto the counter, not on yourself (old recommendations) which creates a shadow to work in. These are the new guidlelines by the NKBA – please check them out before it’s too late. This information was in a recent NKBA magazine or Remodeling magazine. I passed my issues on already but talk to your designer about this new guideline – you won’t regret it. I was a kitchen/bath designer remodeling contractor for 30+ years and it was a great career. Good luck – mistakes are hard to live with and expensive to rectify. Love your new kitchen – it’s a breath of fresh air – you will make a great addition in the photo shoots now. Congratulations, you will love it.

Hi Kevin,
Congratulations on the new kitchen. It looks really nice with lots of storage. I have a double oven and went with KitchenAid with cobalt blue interior. I absolutely love this oven. It is convection, broiler with baking options and clean up is pretty easy and is stainless steel. We found it on clearance at Best Buy and haven’t had any issues with it and it is going on 6 years and we use it all the time. Good luck in making your choice. This weekend we are trying your recipe from last week with the veggies and chicken, forgive me I forgot what you called it!

Hi Kevin,
Your plan looks great! My kitchen is lagging mostly because it’s my husband’s retirement project…but I’ve spent lots of time in showrooms and reading about all things kitchen. Totally agree to buy 2 ovens, not just one double unit…my hubby’s idea originally…if one goes out for some reason, you still have the other one. I’m sticking with GE, which I had before in our pre-retirement house…reliable and total workhorse with no cold/hot spots. 10 years with the last one and never had a repairman and still going strong I think with the new owners. For the 2nd oven, i’m getting the 30 inch advantium…had one of those before and just loved it…convection/microwave/sppedcook all in one. Good luck!

I have Kitchen Aid, two ovens and a dishwasher. The washer is exceedingly quiet. The ovens are good and I also have a heating drawer which is really handy. My sister just remodeled her kitchen. Reminds me of yours. She is thrilled. I will try to add a pic.

Oh, regarding the ovens; I have no opinion as I haven’t shopped for one for a long time and wouldn’t want to comment – some great points though about “oversized equipment”. I have a standard sized oven and it’s a challenge when I entertain – also the convection, while I believe is over-hyped should be an option. One problem I have with my GE is that the shelf in one certain position hits the light in the back. If I’m not gentle the bulb burns out if I bump it and it isn’t easy to replace – very bad design. I suggest you put a showroom model through the paces – make all the moves you normally would. Many brands have a working showroom in a design showroom – ask your salesperson to get you an invitation to one of their demonstration events where they make a full meal with their appliances. You will learn so much and make better choices. I worked for the GE Design Showroom for some years and it is an awesome way to understand your appliances and define your choices. Most brands have these working showrooms – get an invite, you won’t regret it.
Sheila says
I have the GE Profile also and love them. They heat up quickly! The fan does run for a long time after you shut it off , but I open the door to cool off quicker. A repair man on my old GE set said when replacing the computer panel that the heat from oven added to a faster electronic module burnout (?) so they added the fan. Good luck!plans look great.

We redid our kitchen in 2004. I have a 48″ DCS gas stove with double ovens, which I love (as well as the infra-red broiler). I insisted in getting a Dacor warming oven and I use it all the time. I have a thing about hot plates and hot food–maybe it’s an obsession. I would highly recommend one, especially with the entertaining you do. Mine is in the island. You can proof in it, as well. I have read that electric ovens are better for baking but I have not had issues with my gas. I think it’s just part of getting used to it. DCS has been a very dependable stove. I have an Advantium high speed oven that we purchased last year and that’s been great. It’s pricey, but does everything I want and quickly. We had a Sharp but it broke and couldn’t be fixed. Regarding the wall ovens, be sure that the interior dimensions are the size that you want. We had a wall oven when we moved here and it was very small. It is an exciting and stressful time for you.
Katherine A Farrell says
Hi Kevin – DON’T buy Viking wall oven!! The fan is quiet alright but the
control buttons will actually “pop” off if the door is accidentally slammed too hard. Also, the ink/lettering on the control panel rubbed off during cleaning and we eventually had to replace the entire panel. We could no longer see what the functions were on the dial nor could we determine the exact temperature we wanted. Very disappointing. The G rubbed off too so now we have a “Vikin” – I expected more from such a high end company.

I have a very busy catering business and have two counter top Waring commercial convection ovens which I absolutely love and never use my wall ovens anymore. They heat instantly and cook scones, bread and cheesecakes perfectly. No noisy fans or expensive electricity bills either. Probably not going to cook a large Turkey but then I do not do that anyway.
Good luck Kevin the search is daunting.

Congratulations on your project. Even though you need to keep the Excedrin handy, you will be SO pleased after the workmen finally give you back your life.
Two suggestions, Kevin.
1- Take the cabinets all the way to the ceiling even though you have high ceilings. That provides more storage (something we with old homes often need) for rarely used items and keeps dust and oil from accumulating above the cabinets. That also prevents the area from being a space that requires cleaning.
2- Skip the Frigidaire Gallery series that, despite their reputation has not been satisfactory, at least, in our experience. (We had an oven with shelves that collapsed as the unit heated up – something that left repair techs bewildered. After months of communication, it was replaced via warranty, but only after spending several more hundreds of dollars for the replacement and installation. The freezer section of the refrigerator is not – and has never been despite multiple service calls – frost free. Crystals dot everything. It has not been replaced.)
Best of luck. I hope you experience none of the headaches and all of the pleasures of renovation.

I have double wall ovens by Kitchenaid and love them. Both electric (my cooktop is gas). The top oven is convection (or traditional–my choice), the bottom one is just traditional. Functions I love: bread proofing, dehydrating, time-bake. Can’t find the model numbers, but I do know they aren’t the cheapest ones; they’re a couple steps up.
I am less impressed with my 5-burner Kitchenaid cooktop. It works fine, but the cast iron grates cracked within 18 months (just after the warranty ended). Spendy to replace.
Also, let me share one important thing I learned: we raised our base cabinets 2 inches (which was good–love the space I have underneath), but I didn’t take into account that the cook top grates would add another 2 inches! Now when I put a big pot on top and try to stir the contents, my elbow is raised as high as my shoulder. Awkward and uncomfortable.
As an aside, in your mock-up it looks like you’ve selected a Newport Brass faucet for your apron sink. If my sleuthing is correct, DON’T DO IT!! Newport Brass is junk. Expensive junk! We remodeled our kitchen 5 years ago with new cabinets, countertops, clay-fired (Shaw) apron sink, bridge faucet, appliances–the works (just like you are doing). The $1500 Newport Brass bridge faucet was nothing but problems from day one. The handles spun without shutting off, the sprayer was a stream–not a spray, the spout wobbled, the cartridges malfunctioned, the list goes on. We replaced so many parts that I can’t even keep track. Found out later that our story is not unique. I don’t know anyone who has been happy with Newport Brass. Take the time to read reviews and you will see what I mean. Two months ago we finally broke down and bought a Rohl (Perrin and Rowe) bridge faucet, sprayer, and drinking water tap and WE LOVE IT. Check out the “Country Kitchen Collection.” Expensive but well worth the money. Extremely high quality. It’s made well, it works beautifully, and it is absolutely beautiful.
Good luck with your selections and have fun with your remodel.

Hi Kevin
I have double wall ovens, GE Profile. They were an out of box special 18 years ago, a fraction of what they cost now. They have been great ovens. My only bad time was when the electronic control panel died during a holiday weekend years ago. We managed to get a new panel from an appliance supply store nearby and my husband, who can fix most things, installed it and we were good to go. Otherwise no complaints. Fan not too bothersome. I also agree, stay away from LG. I have a refrigerator and all the shelves are cracking and falling apart.

I ordered my appliances there when I redid my kitchen and I am very pleased. My oven is a Bosh convection oven. It is a large single oven though but I can recommend this label for its sleek design, which makes it easy to keep clean on the outside. I like the variety of settings for cooking different types of foods and the self clean function too. I prefer European brands for their designs (I am an architect) and the sophisticated types of settings they provide (I am European born). I would also look at brands that offer professional rated appliances since you are a gourmet cook. Bertazzoni e.g. has attractive options at very competitive prices.

Hi Kevin! It’s exciting to remodel but stressful to make all these decisions. We built our house just over 3 years ago and got the GE Profile double wall ovens. Wall ovens are so important if you are entertaining or using for your purpose..your job. I have convection in one oven and regular in the other. My only complaint is that I have a hard time seeing the settings on the all black screen. I have to turn on all my kitchen lights to see them even in the daytime! That is a hassle! It would help if my controls were at eye level but I have my microwave above so they are too low.

I had 2 Jenn Airs at my former house. One was a wall unit. They were 20 yrs old when I left and had no problems but the fan on the wall unit was noisy. Things change through the years though and I would be very careful about who owns the company and current reviews. I agree with the comment about Lowe’s. I agree with the comment about Samsung and LG. It appears that status brands do not necessarily equal a good product anymore (learned through a dishwasher experience). Also, new is not necessarily better. I went through a kitchen renovation. Once. I would move before going through that again. I love your new cabinets! I love your new design. Good luck!

Happy Easter, Kevin,
I have had my double KitchenAid ovens for 10 years now. Absolutely love them, especially the convection choice. All my kitchen appliances are KitchenAid and have never had a problem with them. I will say that when they were made by Hobart Manufactuing, way back when, they were better but certainly didn’t have the new technology and options available today.
Look forward to a video tour of the completed kitchen reno.

hi Kevin,
we have a wide Electrolux oven with gas top, (we didn’t have room for doubles), we installed 4 years ago, has functions for bread proofing and time-bake. Its very fast to heat up, and it’s super quiet for a fan oven. Its black front with glass, which sounds hard to clean, but looks much cleaner than my old silver or white appliances. We installed the matching extractor, and that does sound like a jumbo jet is parking in your kitchen…
We had planned to add a steam oven as our second oven, many of them have baking functions as well. Here in New Zealand only Miele were offering them at the time but I think a few more companies are now. Steam ovens can replace a microwave too.
We live in an old Manse house, we have a very high roof stud, we both love to cook and we installed extra tall cupboards, for storing things we don’t use every day. Was really worth it for the extra space.

First, how is your new fur baby? You don’t mention her very often, so wonder how you all are settling in. She’s such a beautiful girl! Anyway, some years ago we bought all Whirlpool appliances, including washer and dryer, and that will never happen again. Whenever there was a problem, which occurred with all of them within a five year period, trying to work it out with Whirlpool was a nightmare. We’ve never encountered such unhelpful, rude customer service. Do yourself a favor and try another brand.

Go for the top of the line whatever you get, but stay away from LG & Samsung…go American!
Anne in Vermont, Zone 4/5 says
Hi Kevinn
Although I no longer have double ovens, I echo the comments above about noise. The first two places I lived that had double ovens had great GE ovens. When it was time to sell in 2007 the realtor required that I replace the late 70s fully functional double oven because of the dated doors. Imagine my horror on first use of the new one when a fan made noise long after the oven was turned off. Then it turned out that the buyer was going to gut the whole kitchen and the realtor tried to sell me my own oven. No thanks, too noisy, but I don’t recall the brand.
As for the comment on two separate ovens on separate circuits, again, experience tells me that is not a bad idea. I remember the Christmas Day the oven failed and neither one would work. I cooked at the neighbor’s across the snowy gardens.
Good luck, Anne

Hi Kevin – For starters, so glad to see that you don’t have a microwave perched above shoulder height!!! Honestly, who ever thought it was a good idea to pull a cup of boiling something from overhead….. I hve a GE profile comgo walloven and microwave. The oven is convection or not, depending on what setting you use. Yes, the fan runs forever – not sure if that is a GE thing or not. But even more important for you to research is exploding oven doors. No, I’m not pranking you. I came home one day to a large heap of shattered glass on the floor under the oven and pieces that shot as much as 8 feet distant. Now, had you warned me this could happen I would not have believed you but, google it, it happens. I didn’t pursue it to see if it’s a GE problem or a generic oven door glass problem. I ordered a replacement glass and managed to fix it myself. But for a long time after, hung a window screen from the oven door handle (very tacky and a little weird, I know, but better than surprise incoming while draining a boiling pot of spaghetti.) Things seem to have settled down and the only things flying around are the predictable bits of batter, chopped nuts or spoon splash.
Best of luck with your selection process!

I took the liberty of looking up the highest rated wall ovens on Consumer Reports for you, Kevin. I consulted CR back in December when I needed to get a new oven for my apartment (the old one gave me carbon monoxide poisoning). Temperature stability is very important for safety – if the temperature is fluctuating up and down, it is possible that the appliance is leaking toxic fumes into your house. From what I can see, it looks like Whirlpool is your best bet. Single oven model numbers to look at are Whirlpool WOS92EC0AH and Whirlpool WOS97ES0ES, and their double oven model is Whirlpool WOD93EC0AS1. Samsung is tied for first place with the Whirlpools (NV51K7770SG/AA for a single oven, and NV51K7770DG/AA1 for a double oven), but are quite a bit more expensive and, as others have mentioned, can be quite finicky. Best of luck and can’t wait to see the finished product!

We have a Bosch wall oven (well under the bench actually) which is very good. The fan is audible but not distracting. My only advice is to go for pyrolitic ovens if you can afford it. I thought to save money by not doing so, and have regretted it every day since.
And on noise, again if you can afford it, invest in a Schweigen rangehood/extractor fan. They’re virtually silent as the engine is mounted in the roof not in the unit. That was the best buy in our new kitchen. We have a low profile one that just sits under the top cupboards. Brilliant – it can be on the top speed and all you hear is a mild hum. AND the filters just slip out for cleaning in the dishwasher.
Lindsay says
Just one bit of advice – don’t put the ovens up too high ! It gets very dangerous to remove very hot items ( especially as one gets older ) from up on high – and make sure you have counter space on either side to put the hot items on .
Enjoy your new kitchen !

One of the best investments I ever made was a warming drawer under] the lower oven. Never a cold dish or plate

Hi Kevin, wow the toughest reno job you can imagine, but the finish rocks, magic happens again!
A few suggestions – binge watch
HGTV- Property Brothers & Chip & Joanna.. both have great kitchen reno ideas, like cabinets to ceiling, great use of space and equipment. Keep old fridge in garage or basement/super party storage. Buy a new one. Everyone is right, no big box stores, use appliance stores! I dismissed designer, her sources don’t hit your needs, sorry but
it looks a like like vanilla yogurt, ours was the same….you need some fun, some trendy stuff too like concrete countertops – need to shut up before I drive you nuts!

Hello Kevin. Living in New Zealand, I always seem to receive your blog a little later hense I am at number 68 of the list… !! We have recently moved into our newly built house . I have a double wall oven ( 2 separate ovens) for which I am so far VERY happy with. They are ” BOSCH” . Both very quiet with the fan. You have the possibility to do fan or not, heat from top only, heat from bottom only or both. I also have , like you, wide counter top ( absolutely necessary….for baking, meal preps as well as having room to hold your glass of Proseco while you are cooking ! I also have a large square sink which is so handy for rincing roast dish or wash the dog !!! ( she is not a Great Dane but a Shitzu…. ) you will love your new kitchen! Take care. Aurevoir from NZ.

As far as ovens, I had a Miele in my previous home and that was the best wall oven I’ve ever used. I miss it so much! Worked perfect and had so many perks.

Go with GE, or Whirlpool
I have also had good luck with Kenmore elite.
My current set, GE,has a proofing cycle for baking and convection feature with the top oven. I never use the self- cleaning feature. Prefer to skip the high heat and clean with easy off. Can blow fuses using the self clean.
Many fancy features are not necessary and bring up the initial cost as well as repair costs when and if needed. Cheers! Your new kitchen sounds awesome!
Brian from Cleveland says
I have Dacor wall ovens and love them. The fans are quiet even on convection. They have so many features that I never used but might one day. Also they each hold 5 racks which is awesome for baking cookies.
Peggy says
Hi, Kevin, we don’t have a wall oven, but recently replaced our 20-yr old GE oven (made in Canada!) with a Whirlpool. We asked a Home 360 appliance repair person for his recommendation as to which brand is best, and he said Whirlpool. If you have a trusted appliance repair person, or know someone who does, you might ask them.

When we bought our house, the previous owners installed two KitchenAid wall ovens. This was in the early 90s, and these babies are great. They’re both a combination of regular and convection ovens and both have broilers. They also have the ability to use temp probes which I love. They have the self-clean feature that I’ve never used. I prefer to clean them myself. Yeah, they’re old, but they’re great and I don’t plan on replacing them anytime soon!
Ed Morrow says
A suggestion.
In the replace the drawer underneath the ovens with a warming drawer. A warming drawer is worth the space. You can keep cooked dishes and plates warm before serving, raise bread dough with assurance, and lots of other uses. We’ve got one and I don’t know how we did without it.
As for ovens, I’d check Consumer’s Report. CR is not the final word, but they have objective and quantified assessments with lots of data about things like temperature accuracy and heat distribution. It’s well worth checking it out, even if you have to go to a local library to find a copy.
Judith Miller says
Don’t mess with the high-dollar ovens…..They are often more features, more problems. I have had 3 re-do’s of ovens in 2 kitchens and have Kitchen Aids each time. Wouldn’t have any other. The convection feature is worthwhile even tho not often used. I think they are the best looking, easiest to operate, and fewer problems than friends who put in Wolf’s, Vikings, even GE’s, Whirlpool’s and others like. You can’t go wrong, and their customer service phone service will solve 99% of your questions on the spot.

When we built a new house five years ago, double wall ovens were at the very top of my list in terms of amenities I wanted in my kitchen. They are well worth it! Two things that I would consider, now that I have had mine for a while, are oven depth and rack placement. If you ever bring home those family size “take and bake” pizzas, you might want to be sure your ovens have enough depth. Mine are a touch shallow, and I have to fold up (or cut off) one edge of the pizza. Also, if you are a fastidious baker, you might want to be sure that your middle rack is actually in the exact middle of the oven. Plenty of baking recipes specify upper-middle, lower-middle, or middle for placement of your baking rack. Yes, these are little things, but I think worth considering. BTW, my ovens are Kenmore Elite.
MWG says
An accomplished… quite busy handy man and a sales associate at a dealership for appliances told me be really careful about the self-cleaning features. These features run at such high heat your ovens won’t last as long and frequently malfunction. Each of them said don’t ever clean your oven before a holiday. Also can never find anyone to repair an LG dishwasher. No one I called would/could fix it. Their information is closely held & proprietory. I like my GE.
Dot says
Kevin, once more, I cannot recommend enough double full glass door ovens with two doors that swing out on hinges like regular doors! They are so easy to work with and you’ll never burn yourself like you would trying to either put pans in or remove anything, especially a very hot heavy roasting pan, over a door that is a standard drop down.
Some time ago I asked Lowe’s if they had a supplier to purchase those door type ovens and Lowes didn’t.
But I know they still exist and another commercial design supplier, other than Lowes, can purchase them or you might be able to purchase them directly yourself. You probably can check them out online. They are a little bit pricey but more than worth it! Mine are very old and are White-Westinghouse, who probably doesn’t make them any more.
Also, on your kitchen design, I might suggest that the two double ovens are perhaps too low and should be raised up higher…at least 6 in.
I’d be happy to take a picture of my double ovens, that frankly I would be lost without, if you can tell me how to get a picture to you. I’d be more than happy to send it.
Best of luck in your new kitchen!

First, I love reading your news! And, the former happy homeowner in me lives a little vicariously thru you, so thanks for sharing your updates, challenges and delightful somewhat wicked sense of humor. For the oven question, as a former custom home “builder” with my husband, I discovered a typical wall oven comes in different sizes, both length and width. Who knew?! Consider the size of the pans you will be using in the oven(s) when evaluating oven choices. Or, you could be purchasing new cook/bakeware, too! Ouch. Good luck!

We currently have Viking but are switching to Wolf.

I personally would not recommend a microwave above the stove top. I found the fans to clear steam, smoke etc from stovetop cooking is not near as effective as a good hood over stove top. The only thing l know regarding built in dual ovens is if they can be replaced separately. My daughter has one microwave above the oven. It actually is one unit. Since the microwave burnt out the whole, both microwave and oven unit needs to be replaced.
Your kitchen is going to be beautiful! Always enjoy your posts/ web site.

I can’t recommend a new oven; my Frigidaire Flair is over 50 years old. I will say, the oven door lifts up, which is a great idea and I’ve never burnt my arms, so I would look at the ovens with French doors. I enjoy reading the comments for all the recommendations and reviews. I’m planning for a new kitchen and would look forward to hearing a kitchen remodel dos and dont’s blog post from you, maybe right after the remodel, and then a 6-9 month update when you’ve used your kitchen and discovered other pluses and minuses of the design, appliances, etc. It’s probably the most used room in your home, so needs to be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

Love my GE appliances. Instead of a second oven we put in an Avantium. The GE Advantium 120 is a microwave/oven/convection oven.

I recommend Wolf wall ovens! They are just perfection! Have both convection and conventional cook modes. They are quiet and trouble free. My first one purchased in 2002 is still going strong at my daughter’s house and when we built our current house in 2010 I put a Wolf wall oven in our kitchen. Their cooktops are fabulous as well! My favorite feature is the incredibly low simmer feature on all the burners. Best of luck!

I have a Kitchen Aid wall oven and love it.
Cindi Morrison says
Hi Kevin, My Kitchen Aide blows vents hot air out into the kitchen since it is in a position where it cannot be vented outside. I really dislike this as it makes the kitchen so hot in the summer or winter when we are entertaining and have lots of people standing around in the kitchen. I hope you can vent yours outside to avoid this problem.
Christy says
We have an Electrolux Icon wall oven, it’s fairly quiet and we love it. We’ve had it about 8 or 9 years now, no problems, it mostly cleans itself (which is a plus for us lazy cleaners). Instead of double wall ovens, we opted for a Fisher & Pykel gas range, so that gives us a gas and electric baking option.
Meg says
I don’t have an oven recommendation, but do want to caution you about a microwave/exhaust fan combo. The design sketch looks like there is one above your stove, and IMHO they don’t accomplish either function well. Many don’t even vent to the outside. If you will be doing serious stovetop cooking, you will want a good exhaust fan. Keeps the grease/grime/odors down and smoke detectors silent. High microwaves seem unsafe to me too, but then I’m height challenged. Good luck – you’re going to love having a new kitchen. Always the heart of any house.
Margaret says
Hi Kevin,
Congratulations on the kitchen remodel! I have Kitchen Aid Superba double ovens and love them. My sister does as well. They are easy to clean and also have a convection oven option. Timers to start and stop cooking and self cleaning. They are attractive and truly lack nothing as far as I can see. Good luck to you!
ellie says
I’m sure it goes without saying, but check the internal dimensions of the oven. The Thermador ovens that came with our house are not deep enough for some of my regular baking pans and cookie sheets. It’s not just a matter of buying smaller pans, it means allowing for more time when baking cookies (fewer cookies per sheet.) One of the ovens is a combo microwave/convection/regular oven. Love it. No need for a separate microwave and plenty of space to nuke several dishes at once.

I love my whirlpool tub. Both ovens have convection and convention. It has steam cleaning too!

I wish I had had all that helpful info above from your readers a couple of years
Ago when I had to replace my 20 yr old Dacor which I loved, because a certain household chef dropped a full ceramic baking dish on the door glass! What to do: spend $400+ on glass replacement on an “old” appliance or get a new oven. I thought buying new was pragmatic. Then came the trauma of finding new one for the “available” space. 30″ oven easy, right? Not so! I had to settle on a Whirlpool Gold Series with convection & the cooling fan whistles for about half an hour after shut off. Annoying! It looks sleek though! Same measurement dilemma down the road for insert refrig and microwave…think ahead too!
I realize in your fabulous culinary profession that you probably do need two full ovens, but I still regret not getting one large oven/1 small oven as the original Kenmore ovens before the 1995 remodel. For a small family, that small oven was perfect and economical. I agree with the suggestions for:. .. a warming drawer, a handy landing spot for hot items, spice central, cabinets up to ceiling (add crown molding). My island cabinet measured for cereal boxes is super although the enclosed bread drawer was a bust. My dedicated bake center is the star with everything ( flour, bowls, machines) at my finger tips. My granite island which has never been treated looks like it was installed yesterday except for where someone parked a hot iron. The complementary Corian counters have likewise stood the test of time although now there are so many more fabulous other materials. Avoid white! I could go on & on! I guess the bottom line is to really think how you cook and what you want at the ready! Good luck. All your kitchen experience will pay dividends in the remodel. I do miss Lily as she reminded me of our beloved beagle Jenny who loved the sound of a cracked egg to lick the shells!

P.s. think under cabinet task lighting & the necessary electrical connections ahead of time. I know how dark winter afternoons can be in the winter!

Hi Kevin,
Here’s my best advice. Gas for stovetop, but always electric for ovens, with a gas assist for broiling. More even cooking, faster to heat up and cool down. Unless you have a status addiction, go with GE Profile. They’re just very solid, very reliable, well calibrated and do the job perfectly. No one needs all the price gouging bells and whistles of a Jenn Air or Wolf, or similar. GE Profiles get great reviews, are simple to repair and every service person knows them. I’ve built three kitchens and always go GE. Never regretted it and I cook, cook, cook.

Kevin, Like Betty, I also have a Dacor stove. It is an American company that hand makes their appliances.Lowes does carry or can order for you.It is by far the best stove I have ever bought. The double wall model is around 6500. Not inexpensive, but you are a great cook and need a good stove. You can look at their website to read a little more about their products. Good luck.
Venessa Allegretto says
Ps. I looked at your new kitchen , and Just a suggestion, a full stove, two double wall stoves and a warming drawer in the island to keep foods warm for get to gethers..
Joe Appleton says
Because my history includes five years of owning three bakeries, I would have to go with one of the ovens being a convection oven, and OH would I love to have an oven that could be used officially as a proofer (as opposed to the way I try to use my regular oven as one). I had gas ovens in my bakeries, and I would recommend getting one gas, with convection, and one electric, without. As long as that also gets you a proofer!

Hi! I got busy with Easter company so I’m probably too late. For 20 years I have had a GE two oven unit…one a self cleaning oven and the other an eye level microwave. The cabinet needed modifying but my husband could do it. I have loved it but I also have a free standing range…holiday meals are so much easier with 2 ovens. My wall oven is only noisy when self cleaning cycle is on. I’m out of date, but recommend GE.
Jaon says
Kitchenaid for sure. Mine is microwave oven over full-sized oven with three racks, the bottom rack is beefed up and slides extra easy. The microwave is also a convection oven so you get multiple functions. I got mine at lowe’s when I did my kitchen in 2016…no regrets.

Hi Kevin,
Check out this link. https://bestreviews.com/best-wall-ovens
Mind you that the ovens reviewed are not crazy expensive ovens. These are name brands that most people can afford. I would love a Wolf brand oven or a Vulcan, or a Dacor, and you may be in a position to consider these brands as a serious investment, but these are professional grade appliances, and their prices reflect that. Someday after I retire (Like…when I’m 90), or if I hit the lottery or some other windfall comes my way, maybe I’ll go for a professional model(oven), but until then….any one of the Top 5 would be nice. 🙂 Good luck on your quest. -Rick

Good luck with your ovens. My solution was to buy 2 “top” ovens–not the set of double ovens. That made them BOTH 100% functional and self-clean. I bought Thermadore and loved them. Good Luck

About 6 years ago we bought and installed an Ikea double oven. The top features the convection feature which is nice. I currently have 2 Ikea refrigerators, 2 dishwashers, and the oven. I couldn’t be more pleased with them. We have had them all for almost 6 years and never had a problem. They were also much more affordable than the fancy brands, at least at the time.

If you haven’t made a decision yet, here’s my 2 cents. Don’t get a Thermador. I have a Thermador wall oven. I do love the way it works but the springs in the door failed and the oven door wasn’t shutting completely. My husband came up with a wooden brace to hold the door shut until we got the problem solved. An appliance repair person wanted hundreds of dollars to repair. My husband, who thankfully is very mechanically inclined, researched new springs and how to replace. Springs were ordered from the internet and he replaced them quickly and the old wooden brace was relegated back to the garage. I have NEVER had an issue with something like this before and was disappointed in what was supposed to be a high quality appliance.
You do have to shut off the oven to change the oven temp on this model.
Not sure what I would recommend, maybe GE. Boy, they just don’t make them like they use to.

Miele. Obviously it depends on how you cook and your kitchen goals & dreams but Miele is just wonderful. Great customer service too. We reno’d our kitchen 2 yrs ago and installed a Speed oven (which is also a microwave) & a steam-combi oven for our 2 wall ovens, and a 30″ Convection oven with steam function as an under cooktop oven. The steam function is incredible for veg & seafood and it takes baking to a new level. Good Luck!

Kevin, I have had two built in wall ovens by G.E. PROFILE
I have never had a problem with them coming up on 16 years
Oven features: are a convection oven, regular baking broil and bake, a warmer, a probe
Time controls: cooking timer, delay start, Kitchen timer, clock, oven light, selfcleaner
it is electric but i love the way it cooks. I also have a viking gas stove but i bake and broil
in my G.E. do not use the oven in the viking stove. Hope that helps.
