New Puppy

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | January 22, 2018 238 Comments

Say “hello” to Avery Ophelia Elizabeth! She’s part-this and part-that, and 100% cute.

Avery spent the first 6 months of her life in foster care (she was originally rescued from a kill shelter). Yesterday, at exactly 3PM, she found her forever home right here at Clover Hill.

I had thought that Avery would require a lengthy adjustment period. But I was wrong. In fact, she won’t let me out of her sight! And should I tell you that she loves to cuddle?

Nothing will ever replace Lily the Beagle. But I’m happy to see prancing paws around this house again!

I understand you getting a dog so soon after losing Lily. Once you’ve had a dog, a house can seem so empty without one. Now, I need to change the page before my dogs see yours get to lay down on the couch! lol.

Now, THAT is a dog! Beautiful shepherd-husky mix, mebbe?
She will always be Ophelia to me. Thanks for saving her.

I have always acquired my cats from a shelter. The last two have
been black. Blacks are overlooked (because they are not ‘flashy’).

My first girl was overlooked for FIVE years! Staff was in tears of
joy when I chose her. Chloe was a senior–12 years old–with
lots of dental and medical problems which I had taken care of or
ameliorated. She spent four royal years with me.

My new girl ‘spoke’ to me through her internet photo–seriously!
She has a sweet disposition in a panther’s body.

God blesses us with wonderful new family members through
animal shelters that care for abandoned animals until we come along.

    Kisses for Ophelia,

What a beautiful addition. We still mourn the loss of our 15-year-old Shepherd and the house was so quiet, even though we have 2 black labs; they are both 10. Three years later we decided to add to our house to shake things up. We adopted another shepherd and she is three times the energy of the others. She will bring great joy to you and the Silver Fox, and Lily will be smiling upon you.

She’s so sweet! Congratulations to you all! No one can ever replace the dog that lives in our hearts (my collie Taffy has permanent residence in mine as Lily does in yours), but truly loving humans make additional room for other fur family, as you have, as I have, as so many do for the ones who really need us. When Pixie and Soleil (also rough collies) came to me after Taffy died, I felt as if she chosen them out for me. Maybe Lily was hard at work for you too, finding just the perfect companion, and didn’t want you to be lonely or sad. Love never dies, Kevin. If that sounds maudlin or trite I cannot apologize; Lily continues to love you and is happy to share you with Avery, as Taffy shares us with Pixie and Soleil. So happy for you two and Avery who looks right at home snuggling on your sofa!
I must eat gluten free, but loved reading your potato bread recipe – looks
delicious!! I’m still enjoying crusty buttermilk cornbread I made yesterday in my old
iron frying pan using cornmeal from a gristmill in NC. We southerners add a little sugar to our cornbread.
Re peeling potatoes –guess some folks don’t know how easily the skin comes off after boiling! Remember, always buy organic potatoes which are, thankfully, very easy to find now — as those not organically grown are among the most toxic veggies due to chemicals used in planting! Same is true of celery. Got to stay healthy!!

Our rescue pup survived Katrina, was in no-kill shelters for about 2 years before we got together. He is a shaggy schnauzer with long ears and tail, now about 17 years old, blind and deaf but bounces around after each nap. Life will not be the same without him but we appreciate each day. May your pup live as long. Enjoy her!

Thank you for rescuing instead of shopping. This puppy will forever love you for saving her life, and freeing up her former foster home to save another. When you adopt, you save 2 dog lives. Thank you for being a great example of love!
