In other news…we decided the best way to honor Lily the Beagle was to set up a fund in her name. Administered through the Columbia-Green Humane Society, the fund will provide support for people who can’t afford veterinary treatment for their pets. The local newspaper caught wind of our project, and — to our surprise and delight — put Lily’s story on its front page. To read the article and learn more about the fund, click here. To make a tax-deductible donation to the fund (every dollar helps!), click here.
Love ya –

Lily’s Legacy of Love is so beautiful. What a wonderful way to carry on her lovely spirit. Thank you.

What a wonderful legacy for such a sweet girl. There are so many people with pets, who can’t afford their health care. I hope Lily’s legacy continues at the Humane Society for a very long time.

Kevin and Mr. Fox, You all are some amazing guys! How wonderful of you to keep Lily’s memory alive while helping other fur babies. I read the article in your local paper, and am literally sitting here crying as I read it and now writing this comment. It touches my heart of all the happiness you all brought to her life. We have 3 rescue fur babies now, we lost our 4th a year ago January 4th. It’s amazing at the paw prints they leave in our lives. One of our 3 now has a tumor on her side at the age of 10. She is still so playful like a puppy and loves to be carried like a baby on my hip! She is my princess and boy does she know it! I hope when the time is right, you all open your hearts and home to another wonderful fur baby They make life so much better

Dear Kevin,
I have two aging felines with special medical needs so I know first-hand what Lily’s fund might mean to many owners. Lily was such a sweet addition to your entries. We’ll all miss seeing her.

Bless your good work in Lily’s memory.
“I think their spirit goes up there, to Sirius, the Dog Star. I can’t imagine anything else that would keep it burning so bright and constant.”

Every time I think of Lily and your loss, it brings tears to my eyes. We lost our fur baby last July and it was incredibly hard. I mourned for weeks…
The day after Thanksgiving we adopted a new fur baby, part Beagle, and are ready to love again.
What a beautiful legacy for Lily and I know it will help those who can’t afford veterinarian services.

Legacies are what life is all about and they come in all different shapes, forms and sizes; this one is a beauty! Thanks for all you and the Silver Fox do, Kevin.

What a bautiful thing to transpire! You are all awesome people! Happy New Year.
Toni says
Just “Wow!” from somewhere deep inside. Thank you, Lily and Kevin and Mr. Fox.
Kim says
So many will benefit from this legacy of love!
Melissa says
How thoughtful and loving. To provide help to those who help pets get their needed care.

What an awesome idea! Too often people with limited means but the best of intentions aren’t able to provide the care their pets need. Scrooges say, “Well if you can’t afford a pet, you shouldn’t have one.” It’s almost always more complicated than that. I think every single mom should be able to have a dog for comfort and protection. Sure beats having a gun.

ayyyyyyyeeeeeee how great is that !
what a perfect story to end out the year – one with heaps of love 🙂

You and Mr. Fox have done a wonderful thing in Lily’s memory and to honor her. I hope thousands of dollars are donated to help other precious animals whose people may not have the funds for the care needed. Bless you both.
Elizabeth says
What a wonderful thing to do to remember your lovely Lily. That is such a great service that is being provided as I am sure there are a lot of people including seniors who struggle financially & either don’t take pets to the vet or don’t have one because of the cost involved.
Patricia says
What a beautiful legacy for Lily. Surely there are people out there who would take in a pet but the cost of veterinary bills is a deterrent. Your generous funding will provide home and love to unknown numbers of animals and humans. I’m sure Lily is thanking you.

and THIS is why I love small town newspapers. They print what really matters to the folks who live there Births,Deaths, Weddings ,gardens , food . .the political stuff of the town .and lets the rest of the world spin in it own orbit. This is a great idea Kevin! Good for Lily and all her friends in need

Losing a pet is losing a friend, a “child”. We have felt that pain. A wonderful article and a lovely way to honour the life you shared with her. I always enjoyed seeing her sweet face on your site.

This is a wonderful way to honor and remember Lily the Beagle. She would be so happy to know that her furry friends out there are going to be able to get the help that they need.
I like the saying in Lily’s newspaper article about wagging your tail no matter how bad you feel.
Dorothy Brown says
What a wonderful idea! Lily was certainly a lucky girl to have such good people.
Diane says
Many blessings for your love and thoughtfulness. Another “baby” is waiting for you to embrace him or her in your loving arms! Don’t hesitate to share that love as soon as possible. This will greatly assist you both in the healing process. Happy New year!

A wonderful tribute to Lily ♥

Kevin, how great that is of you and Silver Fox to have a loving tribute to Lily. I, too have gone through the same awful pain in losing a pet. I adopt rescue Bichon’s and love them toooo much. I always wonder though, why Vet’s don’t have at least one day or two out of the year that they would “forego” charging owners a fee. They don’t.
I love your column and recipes. Hope 2018 is a wonderful year for you both.

Thank you, Kevin and Will, for providing a meaningful way for those of us who have come to know your family through this blog to honor your loss of Lily. I was so happy to make my small contribution to Lily’s Legacy today, and I am sure that you will meet or exceed the goal you have set. Thank you for all you do, in so many ways, to make the world a better place.

Kevin and Mr. Fox,
I cried again. The first time because of your loss. The second time for joy!! You both are remarkable people. Through your pain, you took Lilly’s feelings and made it possible for other people to help their pets stay around longer. Very impressive…..Happy new year!!!

Lily lives on . . . in such a fine way!

Anything to help a Humane Society. Well done, Kevin. And Lily, of course.

That is just a wonderful way to honor Lily, Kevin. I know how difficult it is for me, on a fixed income to afford just minimal vet care for my dog and two cats and would take them more often if I had help to pay for it.
Dear Lily, I know she is looking down from doggie heaven and approving hugely of how you’ve chosen to honor her life.
Hope your New Year is Happy, Happy, Happy!!

This a wonderful idea!! And once again Lily is the star as she well should be. I have several furbabies right now that are rescues. I can’t imagine not being their mom.

Kevin and Will, I’m so sorry. This broke my heart. I’ve read your articles for years and have always loved Lily. I have a 10 year-old Beagle Scooter, so I know how special Beagles are. Dogs are such true friends. They are a member of the family. You gave her such a happy life. You can see Lily’s sweet, charming personality just in your pictures. I’ve made a donation in her honor.

I’ve been reading and enjoying your blog for about a year.
I write short stories for my website … and several months ago I had written this one: http://www.marybethdanielson.com/content/vivian-woke-drowning
When I read about your Lily (I have a Lilly, too, but she’s a human daughter) I thought about my story and thought maybe you would like it, too.
We rescue dogs and then they rescue us.
Thank you for your kindness and your writing and your kind writing.

Nothing can replace a lost pet in our lives, but this comes close. Congratulations on making her life count to help others. Spreading the love.
