Hori Hori Knife/Winner Announced

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | March 2, 2014 890 Comments

Last updated on March 13th, 2015

WOW — over 800 entries for this giveaway! Here’s the winning entry, as selected by the little number generator at Random.org:

Comment #81 from Susan:  Favorite Joan Crawford? “Mildred Pierce”, of course!  Here in Idaho, we’re finally getting some much needed rain in the lowlands…

Congratulations, Susan! To collect your prize, just send me a note.

THIS WEEK, because spring is around the corner…because our gardens will be revealed once the snow finally melts…and because I think you could use a gardening gift right about now…I’m giving away a Hori Hori knife. More about this brilliantly-designed weeding tool, and how you can win one in a random drawing:

I wrote about the hori hori knife last May. Here’s a recap:

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A HORI HORI KNIFE. I’m talking about a Japanese gardening tool with a concave center (like a trowel), and a sharp, serrated edge. Would you like to see what this nifty gadget can do?

In Japanese, hori hori literally translates to “diggy-diggy.” And diggy-diggy it does. Results of recent trials:

First, I tested the tool on wild onions (Allium canadense — sometimes called “Onion Grass”) that dared to emerge in my Woodland Garden.

The pesky onions came up effortlessly, bulbs and all.

Next, I let the tool have its way with Burdock (Arctium minus).

The burdock came up without a hitch, and with its tap root fully intact.

And finally, I slipped Mr. Hori Hori beneath a dandelion. (I refuse to remove all of this Taraxacum officinale from my property — I use the leaves to make Clara’s Dandelion Salad.)

That dandelion gave up without a fight.

The knife is made of sturdy stainless steel. It cleans up easily after a day of digging. Heck, after brushing away soil with my gloved hand, I could see my reflection in the Hori Hori blade.

Note: In addition to its use as a weeding-tool, Hori Hori makes a fine mirror.

Hori Hori even comes with a nifty sheath you can attach to your belt. When you think to wear one.

You might like to have one of these weeding tools, too. And that’s why I’ve purchased another Hori Hori to give away in a random drawing.

To Enter:

To enter the drawing,  just scroll down to the end of this post and leave a comment.  Say anything you’d like. Perhaps you can tell me how the tool would be useful to you. Or, tell me the name of your favorite Joan Crawford flick. (If you think Ms. Crawford and gardening have nothing in common, read this post.)

Already have a Hori Hori knife? Enter the drawing anyway. Just think of what a great gift it would make for a plant-minded friend.

The Rules

One comment per person, please.

Enter soon! This giveaway expires on Wednesday, March 5, 2014. As always, I’ll use the number generator at Random.org to select a winner. The winner’s name will be announced on Thursday, March 6, 2014, so be sure to check back!

This looks like a cool gardening tool. We use the “Cobrahead” which is great for weeding and getting the roots out. It took me a while to get used to using it, but now I love it.

I was glad to see the Robin on the crabtree, though at first it looked like a Cardinal. Here in Zone 5 with 4 inches of fresh powder and 0 degrees tonight, we haven’t seen any Robins. When they return, then I know spring is around the corner but my other birds are a delight to watch. I did see 10-day forcast for 50 degrees a week from Monday, but will see.

I love your blog and have been following it the last several months. I am on my first attempt at your winter seed planting. We are getting sleet and snow today but since it is now March I am getting ready to plant more seeds in my milk jugs. I would love to win the Hori Hori Knife to use in my garden this spring since we are expanding our raised beds to grow more of our own food, I know it would come in handy. Thanks for the great ideas and pictures!

I have been wanting one of these tools. I like to dig up dandelions in the yard instead of spraying them with weed killer. I have a pet and grandchildren so I try to not use anything that could hurt them. This would make it so much easier than using a dandelion fork.

It is almost 10 AM here and it is still minus 3. This is southwest Iowa! Where is spring? We have had flocks of robins everyday this last week at our livestock tank pond. Spring cant be far away. (I hope) We are so tired of this cold. We have used your newspaper trick for weeding and it works wonderfully. We are going to try your Joan Crawford trellis for greenbeans this summer and now I need one of these weeders. Thank you for your most interesting blog. Now off to read about your Naan, I think I want to make it today, it would go nicely with soup. 🙂

Me, Me!! I need this tool!! I moved into a ancient house along the Hudson two summers ago with a beautiful, if wildly unkempt, victorian period garden. Every weekend was “vine-aggedon” but the toughest part was getting out masses of giant burdock in the lawn and all along the perimeter of every flower bed with tap roots as thick as carrots. When I showed local gardeners asking for guidance their advice was “move!” But I persevered and with pulled ever single one out with some kind of a crowbar looking thing from home depot over the course of two years — reseeding patches in the lawn, putting down cardboard boxes in the garden and planting on top. FINALLY, the problem is under control. Only I can spot them now — and when I do, I’m quick on the trigger — or digger. But what you’ve got there looks awesome, so shiny and substantial. Also looks great for planting bulbs. I want it, I want it! I love your website, btw. I want to come over! xxFrosty

My rose garden with snow covering is one of my favorites. After many years, I love my winter garden, but feel I still need more “ever- greenery”, like boxwood. I tried to root the clippings, but failed. I know I’ll always have weeds, so I’m sure the Hori tool would come in handy.

Got flooded out last year and it was a total failure–just let the weeds go to town. Man who farms some of our acreage retiled the filelds, part of my back yard and the garden area–so flooding should no longer be a problem (I hope). But it’s a mess right now with the huge ruts the tiling caused–hope I can get into it early enough to discourage weed problems. Always looking for new tools to help with keeping them at bay.

I live on the northwest coast where there are so many things we cannot grow because of all the moisture and lack of sunshine, but we can grow the weeds and they are the one thing I dislike the most in my garden. I figure if I just spend 15 per day picking weeds I can pretty much keep them under control. I have purchased all kinds of tools to aid in the weed removal process so I am always looking for a “better” tool or a better way to help out. The Hori Hori looks like it would work well so I would love to win it.

I would love to have the Hori Hori to use on my lawn dandelions. I won’t use chemicals and no matter how many hours I work, I can never catch-up so maybe I have been using the wrong tool. I would probably use it on my 20×25 garden plot as I spend so many hours every week trying to keep up with the weeds there. I think I spend more time weeding than gardening and I would like to turn that around somehow. 🙂

That hori hori looks like it would come in *very* handy around here especially helping me actually dig up weeds with the full roots rather than lazily yank them halfway out. 😉

12:21 p.m. – CST – Currently 0 degrees, -13 degrees wind chill – winning a Hori Hori would be a wonderful balm as I begin winter sowing. Great basic tools are my passion. Dandelion salad along with water cress were always the harbingers of spring. Growing up on an active farm we had straw stacks outdoors – early spring we children went out to uncover and dig around the perimeter of these piles to uncover delicious blanched new dandelion greens – what a treat. We did not use any farm chemicals so this was very back to nature. We have lots of snow but even though the temperature is cold, the SUN melts some snow every day – very encouraging. Sun was up before 7:00 CST a.m. today for the first time this year. Made some great parsley soup today with frozen parsley from my freezer – tastes close to fresh. My gardening itch is becoming to much to put off much longer. 🙂

Actually I use mine most turning it almost parallel with the soil and shallowly cultivating the flower beds in spring. Everything looks a little neater when the soil has been turned over at the beginning of the season especially around new plantings. Please put me in your drawing. Mine is now antique!

It digs just about anything, holes for bulbs, upturns weeds, saws small branches out of the way, and when the ground is really hard and dry, this tool will turn over the soil with little effort.

    Hi Kevin,

The snow is deep here, and winter seems to be everlasting.

Years ago I bought a “Japanese Gardener’s knife” a primitive version of your shiny, new, graduated, hori hori, and it is still my favourite tool. I wrapped red duct tape around the wooden handle to make it easier to spot if I drop it in the garden, mine looks heavier, and is no longer shiny, with no measuring marks and no sheath, but it is still the best tool I own. Now I know what to ask for when I look for a second one.

Love your newsletter, hints, recipes and decorating, but most of all your humour . Thanks!

Although the hori hori knife would be a bonus, I’m just glad to know I’m not the only one with a gardening jones right now! For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been doing research on different types of gardening ideas. Mine will definitely be an organic garden with an emphasis on companion plants and adding some character to our garden space. Also, since this will be the 1st year that I will have complete say-so on our garden, I am looking at seed catalogs for new and exciting, vegetables, plants and herbs to try and looking forward to being out in the garden again!

Delightful to turn my thoughts to this years garden projects. I start each day looking out over the overabundance of snow and delighting in what is newly poking thru the snow in evidence that there is actually a dormant garden waiting for the warmer temps that will bring the snow melt. I have a grand plan to continue this season. The hori hori will definitely come in handy to poke thru the cardboard I laid down last year to make new garden space. I still have a list of herbs and groundcover plants to go in there.

In Utah and we are warmer than we should be with all the snow gone from the valley. Lots still in the mountains. Your website is a breath of fresh air with the food and garden and also the house. Enjoy coming here.

Hands down it has to be “Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte”. That movie terrorized me. My parents took my sister and I (7 and 4) to the drive-in and assumed we’d fall asleep after the cartoons. Well, that worked for my little sister, but not for me. I watched the entire thing in silence in the back seat of the Volkswagon. Years later when my dad found out I had been awake the entire time, he would tease me and start singing the “Hush, Hush” theme song. He thought that was hysterically funny—-I didn’t.

howdy, We just got our seed in the mail and have about 30 milk jugs cleaned and cut ready to receive seeds. My girls are so excited to get the seeds in the dirt it has been hard to wait until march. We live in a high desert region where the grass is still brown. This weekend we drove over the pass to much warmer climate for a 4H poultry show. My girls, the total garnders, must have commented on how beutiful and green everything was. We went to a farmers market and bought daffodils to bring home.

I have made the zuccini fritters and now they are a staple at our house–incredible way to use that prolific vegetable (I have never been a fan zuccini bread). Many of your recipes contain flour. We gluten-free folks can often substitute nut or rice flour, but with your expertise, suggestions for such substitutions would be appreciated. And your photos of the loving upgrades you have given the house are very inspiring. Next weekend I will be planting my winter garden for the second season. I had a lot of success last year, and was totally astonished at how those plants grew through snow and freezing weather. And they were so much stronger than any started in the house. What a gift of knowledge–one I will cherish for the rest of my gardening years. I would love to win the knife. It looks like an incredibly useful tool. Thanks for the opportunity.

I was digging dandelions in the vicinity of the suspected drainfield and one came out with a THREE-FOOT ROOT, INTACT. I am not kidding you. I now wish I had taken a picture of it.

Suggestion..wrap orange or pink duct tape around the handle of your hori nori – they can get lost in the garden so easily. My original was lost for an entire season but just needed a quick cleaning when it was found in late autumn. It was within feet of where I thought I lost it..perhaps the raccoons had borrowed it. I taped the handle as soon as I found it…a tracking device would not be a bad thing.

Then we will reset up our vegetable planters in the back yard. I can more easily make items with yeast (I put the covered bowls on the planters edge – I can see the progress of the rise as I use a glass bowl). So Showshoe Naan will be made! I would love to win this tool because it’s so versatile. For instance, I have oranamental grasses that spread too easily throughout my butterfly garden. When they sprout up in front of the smaller plants, I need to cut them out. The blade on this hori hori tool looks like a perfect helper!

Hi Kevin, this is my first comment (I think). The hori-hori knife looks groovy. And incidentally, I want you to know that I was really stoked to learn about winter sowing. I have a whole bunch of seeds sown on my balcony, in a little greenhouse. It was super exciting to get that done in the middle of winter. It made me really giddy in anticipation of the spring garden season. And it makes sense, as it mimics nature’s way. What a great way to begin synchronizing with nature so early in the year. Thanks a lot!

Too cold here to do much gardening – I live just about 30 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana – usually our winters are relatively mild – but today it is 40 degrees with a wind chill of 25 – don’t laugh at us – we are so not used to this cold air. We have had 3 hard freezes (one down to 11 degrees) and all the plants in my ward are dead. But – oooohhh nooooo – not the weeds – they are growing like wildfire. BTW, my favorite Joan Crawford film is “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”

What a great gift idea. I always think March and April are the cruelest months, so taunting. By the end of March, I’ve practically lost my gardening will to live… I’ve read about hori hori’s, but never owned one, and with all the weeding and relocating of wee seedlings in store for me once this winter finally ends, I’d love to receive one! I also have 24 milk jugs sown in January…and can’t wait to see some action!

I am in Phoenix, AZ so it is more “heat” than “cold”.

I have a question: what did you do with this kind of “grass”?

Allium canadense — sometimes called “Onion Grass”

    thanks.
    Huong

    Hori, Hori can you see
    You belong with me!

Kevin, after gardening for 20+years! I realize how important the quality tools are to ease the frustration of weeding. Can’t wait for this snow to disappear and get out and smell the fresh ground. I have seeds sprouting!

I work at a produce and garden center and have written down your website for a lot of my customers to view. Keep up the good work. Tomorrow I’m going to redo my african violets . Off to your page to see how to do it,

Awesome looking tool. Was sick last gardening season here in Pa and I have a jungle under ice and snow. Looks like this would work wonders.

I have lost not one, but two, hori-hori knives. It’s my very favorite tool and if I should be so lucky as to win this one, I will immediately paint the handle some outrageous color not found in nature. Then, if I lose it, it might be easier to find!

Even though the ground is still frozen and covered with snow, I am getting very anxious to dig in my garden and see what comes up in the garden I helped put in last fall at my sister’s new house!

Those favorite wild violets will be tamed with the Hori Hori into a border edging in my coming- along- each- year shade garden. And then there’s those rampant lily of the valley that need thinning, and then, and then – there’s always more to do just so I can dig in the dirt!

Mildred Pierce, is only one of my favorites. I like the idea of the diggy, diggy, but I would give it to my daughter-in-law who LOVES to garden. I do enjoy your posts.

I was checking out your recipe for cinnamon rolls and one thing leads to another, in this case to a hori hori. What a cool garden tool!

I started using a hori-hori about 20 years ago. It has remained my favorite and most essential gardening tool. I could always use another, because, unfortunately, I sometimes put mine down in the garden, get distracted, and then can’t find it again right away. I had thought of painting the handle a fluorescent yellow, but that would destroy the essence of hori-horiness. Now, I did not know it meant diggy-diggy!

Love garden tools & have several but not a hori-hori. Makes me want to get out in the garden as we’re starting to occasionally get some spring weather here in the NW.

I have lots of onion grass and would love to try it out on all of mine. Also would work great on my sticky vines that grow around the rocks and when I say sticky I mean stick your finger not stick to your fingers. I hate them. Keep the good stuff coming!
