Hori Hori Garden Tool/Winner Announced

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | May 4, 2016 894 Comments

Last updated on May 8th, 2016

IMG_9394Per the little number generator at Random.org, the winner of the Hori Hori weeding tool is comment #188, from Noelle. Congratulations, Noelle! To collect your prize, just send me a note.

This week, because spring has definitely sprung…because weeds are popping up in places where they can’t be smothered with newspaper…and because you might need a gardening gift right about now…I’m giving away a Hori Hori tool!

I wrote about the hori hori back in May of 2013. Here’s a quick recap:

I recently purchased a hori hori knife. It’s a famous Japanese gardening tool with a concave center (like a trowel), and a sharp, serrated edge. Would you like to see what this baby can do?

Note: In Japanese, hori hori literally translates to “diggy diggy.” And diggy diggy it does!

Results of recent trials:

First, I tested the tool on wild onions (Allium canadense — sometimes called “Onion Grass”) that dared to emerge in my Woodland Garden.

The pesky onions came up effortlessly, bulbs and all.

Next, I let the tool have its way with Burdock (Arctium minus).

The burdock came up without a hitch, and with its tap root fully intact.

And finally, I slipped Mr. Hori Hori beneath a dandelion. (I refuse to remove all of this Taraxacum officinale from my property, because it is important food for honey bees.)

That dandelion gave up without a fight.

The knife is made of sturdy stainless steel. It cleans up easily after a day of digging. Heck, after brushing away soil with my gloved hand, I could see my reflection in the Hori Hori blade.

Note: In addition to its value as a weeding-tool, Hori Hori makes a fine mirror.

Hori Hori even comes with a nifty sheath you can attach to your belt. When you think to wear one.

You might like to have one of these weeding tools, too. And that’s why I’ve purchased another Hori Hori to give away in a random drawing.

(Psst: Wanna buy your own Hori Hori? I purchased mine — as well as the one I’m giving away — from this online source.)

Random Drawing!

To enter the drawing,  just scroll down to the end of this post and leave a comment.  Say anything you’d like. Perhaps you’d like to tell me what you are binge-watching these days. At the moment, I’m hooked on The Americans, Mozart in the Jungle, and Bates Motel.

Already have a Hori Hori tool? Enter the drawing anyway. If you win, you can always give the gadget to a plant-minded friend.

The Rules

One comment per person, please.

Enter soon! This giveaway expires at 11:59PM on Sunday, May 8, 2016. As always, I’ll use the number generator at Random.org to select a winner. The winner’s name will be announced both here and on my Facebook page on Monday, May 9, 2016, so be sure to check back!

Maybe this time I’ll be lucky. I stopped fighting the dandelions in my lawn to help the bees but I still remove them from my flower and vegetable beds. This tool would be useful.

We are binge watching Last man on earth and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Both hysterical

P.S. I now have a healthy, bubbly, sour dough starter on hand at all times. Thanks for the simple tutorial.

The wild onion seems to multiply right in from of my eyes, and I dig at them with a knife, screwdriver, and sometimes, just cut with shears, even though I know they will be back. I have been wanting a hori hori for years. Thanks for offering this prize, Kevin! I let the Dandelions grow in my lawn, and I just overseeded with White Dutch Clover. When it blooms the bees are all over it, and it fixes nitrogen into the soil. Plus I get to enjoy the smell of freshly mowed clover once a week or so.

Kevin, your site is an inspiration! Last fall I expanded our garden to make room for more yummy vegetables, flowers, and herbs with a petite hedge of Alpine Strawberry plants. I grew them from seed myself so I could afford enough to get a handful of sweetness each day. Seeing there is a holster for that tool, I would still have a hand free to snack on my berries. This could work out quite well. Tell me, do you know where I could find a nice holder for the margarita in my other hand?

Hi Kevin, I have been enjoying your blog for the last three years. Been using many of the recipes and gardening tips you have shared. This spring I put down newspaper under my mulch. It was very easy. My husband who doesn’t like to spend a lot of time working on the lawn or flower beds even helped. He said I hope this works, because it is easy to do in spring. Well, he just doesn’t want to hear me complain about the grass and weeds in the flowerbeds! He won’t pull the weeds, that has become my job. You how if you do a job a couple times it is now yours for life! 😉 Best to you and the Silver Fox!

This Hori Hori tool would be a great help in the garden. The other name for it, diggy diggy reminds me of my old dog Duke, who was my pet when I was a little girl. He was a mix of hound and beagle and loved to dig tunnels in our backyard. He could have been called diggy diggy = ) He was the same size as Lily the beagle. Thanks for the chance to win such a useful tool.

It’s that time of year again in the desert! A Hori-hori will fix everything. Any tool that saves time by being effective allows me to give garden tours, plant, propagate, give gobs of plants away, and just sit and talk to folks, which is the most fun of all! Can’t we somehow “rig” the random winner picker??

I entered your contest for this in 2013 and I’m pretty sure we had to share it on FB. An out-of-town friend saw the post and gave me one as a Hostess gift when he and his wife visited us that summer. It has been a life saver – well a carpel tunnel saver as I jab it in the ground instead of doing the twisting action I do with other tools. Everyone should have one especially if you have the same problem with your wrist bothering you. I wouldn’t do without it and would love another one to keep in another area of the property to be more convenient. Glad you posted where to get it as I was just thinking last week or ordering another one for myself.

I would love to win a hori hori. It would make a great addition to my gardening tools. Today I spent about 6 hours in my yard. Cleaned out three beds, planted tomatoes, squash, peppers, cukes, green beans, radishes, leek, and a bunch of other stuff. Yes, I am exhausted and am in bed waiting for sleep to catch me and renew my energy for tomorrow. I need to work for three hours and then back to the yard.

Sadly, I have not even attempted to go out and weed my flower garden yet. It’s been cold and rainy — and rainy and cold. Perhaps, winning this tool will inspire me to get out there.
And it is very kind of you to always be giving things away for free.

Just moved into my house and can’t wait to “hit the yard” – planting fruit trees, big above-ground veggie area, and anything else I can get my hands on. This tool will make my life so much more fun.
