This week, because the weather is better…because I can now turn my oven on without fear of fainting…and because my spouse and I recently celebrated our 17th anniversary…I’m giving away a brand new Cuisinart Classic Food Processor!
I rely on my own Cuisinart in the same way that Mrs Patmore (of Downton Abbey) relies on Daisy. In the past week alone, the machine has accomplished the following scullery chores for me:
It quickly shredded the squash for these crisp and delicious Zucchini Fritters…

Spent a lovely three days at Nantasket Beach with my husband and grandson — oh wait, I live there! A staycation with my favorite two year old so his mom and dad could get away. I made meatballs (were his favorite last time he visited), butternut squash, blueberry pancakes for breakfast. i got nothing but “I don’t like it”. He lived on peanut butter crackers and yogurt for three days. Oh how I tried.

I haven’t been doing much more than basic survival cooking. And it’s all been bland. Mom has been sick most of the summer and I’ve had to cook for a colitis patient. Bland, bland bland. Lots of rice, some sweet potato, plain fried pork chops, chicken baked with just olive oil and lots of spinach. Congrats on your anniversary and keep the recipes and the views of your beautiful house and property coming. It’s cheering to me. 🙂

This week I picked several quarts of raspberries and dozens of early peaches, some of which went into the freezer, but some made a fantastic pie. Happy Anniversary Kevin and here’s to 17+more. We haven’t gotten away as I have this huge garden to take care of and just love it. I’ve been canning a lot lately as the tomatoes have finally gotten ripe and I share with all my family and neighbors so everyone has wonderful tomatoes to eat. I always brag about your site and how you inspire me to make my garden better with such great hints. Time to start putting in the fall garden. I dug some of my potatoes this week with the grandkids so they could see how they grow. Am excited to dig the peanuts, another new project, in a couple of weeks. Such fun! The food processor would help with the processing of all of those tomatoes. Have a great weekend.

Spent a week at a remote cabin perched on the edge of a red rock canyon. Wonderful hiking from the cabin door, and a soak in the hot tub at the end of every day. Ponderosa pines, blooming prairie flowers and a modern kitchen: heaven!

Yes will be going on a vacation this year for the first time since 1985. My eldest son has invited to go with his family to Hawaii. Oh how I need a food processor! With my current one I have to hold a butter knife in a certain spot to make it work! Hard to get things done when one hand is always engaged in that little chore! We got away for just a few days to the beautiful Michigan Upper Peninsula and returned to Mackinac Island after 40+ years. As much as I loved going, I couldn’t wait to get home to my bed, home cooked meals(mine) and my beautiful vegetable garden! This year’s garden is one of our best!

We have been on a trip to Massachusetts this spring; Puerto Vallarta his spring; and just got back from Toledo Ohio last week. Fabulous art gallery in Toledo, and we truly enjoyed the Botanical Garden. I wish we had been able to see Kevin’s garden though. That would have been wonderful.
My food processor just died, … with a little help from my very significant other.. Oh how I could use one.

Happy Anniversary! Been to our lake house in Northern Wisconsin 3 times and heading up there for a quick weekend next Friday. Flew to Texas for grands dance recital and drove home to Chicago with them for a 3 week visit. Heading to Nashville right after Labor Day for our Navy reunion. Been a great summer!

My 10year+ food processor is spurting oil. Luckily I was able slice multiple cucs for bread and butter pickles, but I think they were the last batch, until I get a new processor. My processor never leaves my kitchen counter. Great for soups, pesto of all kinds, sauces etc etc.
A mini vacation with my daughter and grandsons at Mirror Lake in the Adirondacks…wonderful.

We are planning a trip over the Beartooth Highway and through Yellowstone Park early fall. Had a weekend trip in May to see our granddaughter graduate high school. I haven’t gotten away this summer either (except for a few baseball games in Cleveland). Had my knee replaced last summer and the weeds totally took over my entire property (all 21 acres). I’m trying to take back possession this year, but wih every day full of rain earlier in the spring, I couldn’t get out to do anything and now the weeds are bigger than I am. Hope it’s not a total losing situation. But we keep plugging away. I still enjoy working out there–even if it looks like a disaster.

Happy Anniversary! We celebrated our 34th this year. Tomato pie just screams SUMMER!, and is a summertime staple here (Atlanta). I make biscuit dough from scratch and pat it into the pie shell. You can either flute the crust around the top or leave it very rustic. Sometimes I add black pepper to the flour mixture. It’s hard not to pinch off the crusty top when nobody is looking. I always look forward to your blog. Thanks so much.

took my mom (87) and brother from Ohio to Charlottesville, VA to see Monticello, it was beautufull. then up to Baltimore and visited my cousin and also a grown girlscout from my troop as I was a leader for 12 yr. Then on to New Brusnwich,NJ where son and future daughter-in-law live. Vjisitied ‘Rutger’s Garden’ that was inpressive and free. All in five days, whew! but is was so much fun.

I just planted my first raised bed this summer in the “dirt” of Santa Fe, NM, and I learned that one shouldn’t attempt to grow squash, kale, chard, and broccoli in the same little patch of soil…too many leaves/roots taking up precious space…But, just wait until NEXT SUMMER…!!!

We were lucky enough to have spent 2 weeks oceanside in Key Largo, FL. We got up every morning to watch the sun rise. Beautiful! We rested, snorkeled, lobstered, and ate well. Reconnected with so many friends and just had the time of our lives! Tomorrow we head back up to the mountains of North Carolina… best of both worlds!

Hi Kevin…..As always your giveaways are just too good to resist. My spouse works a summer job: April to October, so we always “getaway” after the season is over. Tidbit of information: Something, probably raccoons, totally destroyed my small corn crop. They came one night and worked their mayhem, then returned the following night to finish the job…..Not one ear of corn was left on my stalks. The little gluttons even left a mess in my yard where they must have had their corn party. Any hints about preventing this in future years short of camping in my garden with a shotgun (which is what I feel like doing)? I’m ready to give up on growing corn at all. I live on Cape Cod, and since that means that the friends and family I miss so much during the winter usually come here to visit, I haven’t been away, but have just taken a few three-day weekends. And today, with a welcome turn in the weather from the dreadful heat and humidity we’ve been having, I’m staying home with the Boston Globe. It may be raining, but it’s refreshing!
And remember, here on Cape Cod, we have an expression for when it’s been raining for several days and we finally get sunshine…

You speak of it being cooler, well here in NorthernNew England, as I was cleaning up the gardens, I kept coming across small red maples leaves on the drive way and the gardens. Not too many but enough to remind me that harvest season is well underway and the nest stop is fall. Not so far away!

I came to know that once a working food processor was broken when my daughter was trying to make a cake this summer. But she did not tell me that it is broken. So I would like to win this give-away food processor to surprise her that mom knew it was broken and also as a gift to her. She will enjoy using it for a long time and I will enjoy her food.

Summer vacation?! What is that?! I did get to the beach for a day with my daughter when she went on an interview to Savannah. I hitchhiked with her since the potential employer paid for a night at the hotel and she paid for the other night. Wonderful!! Now she just needs to get a job!! Anyone hiring biology grads from a top 10 school?! Shameless plug I know.
But….let’s get back to this Cuisinart which I would love because I now own the Cuisinart blender/food processor combo and it just is not big enough. Time for an upgrade!!

Hawaii! Spent 8 weeks there house sitting for my cousin in Kailua on Oahu. Used their food processor to make pesto and other dishes, like various cole slaws. It was too hot to cook there most of the time

Nope, have not gotten away at all. It’s just too hot to even think about going anywhere except the other side of the world where they are going into Fall/Winter or back into the AC house. Good morning Kevin! and Happy Happy Anniversary, my spouse and i celebrated our 10th this yr, we went away to Vermont, but we are leaving in September for 8 nights to Lake Louise , in Banff, Calgary, Canada. The weather will be luscious! mmm how i love the Canadian weather!
So this is where we are going, i find it so generous you giving away the Cuisinart. I use mine all the time, but it is about 15 years old! I cook all the time. We made 89 pints of sweets this past month by picking berries, and buying plums. I made plum preserves like my mom used to make, and made 9 jars of them, 60 jars of back raspberry and raspberry jam. We made the jams when we had a weekend off together, (i’m a nurse) and the weather was 100 degrees out…
So i like to cook!!! ;o) No matter what the weather is…! Happy Anniversary again and i am going to make the blueberry bars, and have also bought a julienne peeler to do the zoodles and noodles ;o)

My son got out of the Navy last month after six years. So my daughter and I flew out to San Diego, where he was stationed, so we could drive back to Connecticut with him. Along the way we stopped at Joshua Tree National Park, The Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone,The Devil’s Tower, Mount Rushmore, and The Crazy Horse Monument. We got to see a lot of this beautiful country we live in and we were blessed with perfect weather the entire trip!

Yes! Our vacation this year was one of those that will be remembered forever. My 86 year old parents and my husband and I traveled to Montana via AMTRAK from Phila to hike the trails of Glacier National Park with our son, daughter-in-law, and his four daughters. Our younger son flew in a week later. During the adventure, we cooked almost everyday and even some of your recipes, Kevin. Our sons and his family live in MT – one of the most beautiful states in our country!

I did manage to get away to Longwood , Florida to pick up my new puppy, a petite Golden-Doodle I named Moxie. We also made a quick trip to St, Augustine and sampled some Mango crusted Mahi-Mahi on the beach.

We have gotten away twice this summer. Once to the Poconos in Penn. Again just this past week to Cape Cod. We even went on a whale watch Thursday and saw “17 Different” whales. It was amazing and apparently was one of the most spectacular whale watches the company ever had.

So far, no vacation this year. Still recouping from an accident. I’m keeping busy dehydrating apples and bananas while canning home made jam. My food processor broke and since I’m not working due to the accident, I can’t justify buying one. I’ve had to forgo some of your wonderful recipes that call for the use of one. Then there are my own recipes that call for a food processor. I didn’t realize how much I rely or utilized it until it was gone.
My next canning feat will be carrots and mint recipe. I have a wonderful mint bed. The rest of my garden was quiet this year. We had way too much rain until the second week of July. Most of the flowers drowned. But that mint bed really went crazy. Some of them are 4 feet high!
Anyway, love all your articles and recipes as well as your humor. Give your beagle a big hug and “cookie” from me!

After an awesome vacation last August (a year ago today we were arriving in Budapest), this summer we are vacationing here on our farm with our 3 big gardens. I’m picking quarts of huge red raspberries right now and will make raspberry jelly later on. We did a day trip to Portland (ME) for the tall ships in July. Happy Anniversary! The timing of this giveaway is funny. Yesterday my young adult son asked me to help him make raviolis from scratch which required that I train him on the Cuisinart. He said that he needed a Cuisinart for his cooking adventures.

So far my husband and I have taken a train trip from the east coast to the west coast, to visit family, and back again. Such a civilized way to travel! While we were gone, we gave the keys to a contractor and along with painting and some electrical work, all of out hard wood floors were refinished, out bathroom was gutted and refinished. Ahhhh … to not have to live through that was wonderful! Kitchen counter is next, so a food processor would be a perfect addition 🙂
Spent the last week at the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. That is always a great time meeting new people from all over the country as well as the world.
A trip to Campobello Island, New Brunswick is in our near future.

Hi Kevin, no hope of getting away for me, with 12 horses of my own and 8 that I take care of for a friend it is just not possible. Love your blog and your lighthearted delivery LOL This year have had so much rain that nothing in the garden has done well and then last week my squashes were inundated with Squash bugs. I have saved a few plants I think. To top it all the raccoons climbed the 4 ft fence around my corn the other night and destroyed a good portion of them. I have put up an electric fence and that seems to have stopped the little devils. Oh well hopefully it will be a better year next year but with Indiana you just never know LOL

Kevin, I have gotten away to your great country. Travelled by motorcycle from BC, Canada to Massoula Montana, Hells Canyon, Utah up back thru washington and oregon. 6 days which most it was between 40 & 50 Cel. Yikes. It was like travelling with a blow dryer attached to your body. Great memories though we did have to take a hotel some nights we were too heated and exhausted to put up the tent gear.
I garden for a living and have so so much parsley and basil……I plan on preparing winter pesto and reg pesto for the winter months…..I just require a better, faster, larger food processor so I am a lllllll in to WIN!!

My friend and I drove down to the Gila Wilderness in southwest New Mexico. It is truly the most beautiful forest/mountains I’ve ever seen! I thought I was in Vermont it was so green. Anyone traveling through New Mexico, check it out. I25 south to Route 152 west. But not if you’re in a hurry. The turns are “hairpin.” We saw deer, a javelina, and a virtual invasion of hummingbirds. I will return.

Happy Anniversary Kevin! We haven’t gotten away this summer but I have greatly enjoyed one of my favorite pasttimes, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. I live in Delaware, a rural farming community near the beach with some great small beach towns. Lewes has the number one farmers market in the state, and a trip here any Saturday from May to Thanksgiving would show you why. This past weekend was our Tomato Festival. Our vendors all practice sustainable farming (even for seafood and meats) and this year the vendors were paired with chefs from our local restaurants. The chefs prepared an item using tomatoes and the variety was amazing! My favorite was a Pimento Cheese and San Marzano Fried Green Tomato Crostini. Since we are the most northern state of the south, pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes are popular items in the region. The chef, Gary Papp from The Palate restaurant took these ideas and made a fairly simple appetizer with a lot of class. The crostini was topped with a saffron aoili and basil microgreens. I am looking forward to making this appetizer myself! It was a fun day with lots of interactions between chefs and the crowds. Makes not getting out of town this summer a lot more fun!

I have been lucky enough to get away more than once this summer. We went to San Simeon and Cambria in the central coastal area of California. Fog prevailed but I love fog. There was an amazing hotel that had a huge collection of amethyst in the lobby that we stayed in near the Laguna Beach Arts Festival. Finally, I brought my daughter and grandsons to a hotel in A Thousand Oaks which had a courtyard completely filled with trees and plants surrounding the pool area. The common theme in all of this is the beauty of nature and how privileged I am to be able to enjoy it. I love your newsletter for the very reason that it expresses those feelings as well.

I had the most amazing trip, we just got back home. My new husband and I drove from New Jersey to Washington State to visit family. My husband who really has not traveled outside of New Jersey very much, wanted to see the Redwoods. Being prior military, I have traveled extensively. We enjoyed the Oregon coast, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, by then after almost 4 weeks on the road we are both ready to come home. We have so many wonderful memories. The trip wasn’t always an easy one. I’m in a wheelchair, not every place that says it’s handicap accessible really is. I would not have traded this trip for anything. We saved for a long time and this was the best honeymoon ever.

Well, first, a new food processor would be heaven. My only son gave me mine, which I still use, back in 1980. Now, it’s really an antique. And, no, I have not been able to get a way. You see, I had a colonscopy back Nov and found a blocked Sigmoid colon, then dec 2 had a heck of a heart attack and a stent put in and not due to obesity, just good ole stress and 30 lbs lost to boot. Since then, My left went “wet” from Macular Degeneration and my right eye, same problem but “gone” and probably tomorrow on my 88th Birth Day, I will not be able to pass my drivers exam because of my eyes so a nice new Food Processor will keep me busy to fix all your wonderful recipes. and I’ll just stay home me and my little Dapple Dachshund and cook and just think about the beach or a good fishin hole back in TX.

We went away in the spring, taking a very long and adventurous retirement trip with another couple. We flew to Nice, France where we rented a car and spent 7 weeks staying in VRBO apartments and small houses all over the Mediterranean, Greece and the Adriatic. One 11 hours drive through Bosnia brought us to Croatia . People all over were friendly and fun to talk with. We pretended we lived in each place we stayed buying bread at neighborhood bakeries, selecting very fresh fish from small fish markets set up in seas-side villages and cooking the very best eggplant, zucchini and artichokes we’d ever had. Great way to see the world.

Your Classic Tomato Pie is the one recipe I KNOW I will make time and again. It’s also quite easy to scale down for just the two of us, using a smaller pie plate or casserole dish.
And because I rarely have canned biscuits on hand (and rarely shop for just one recipe), I know that I can make a fast Carbquik (or Bisquick) dough for this if need be.

What I did this summer. Thus far: visited hospital to have badly torn tendon/foot rebuilt. Left said hospital for almost two weeks in rehab to spend the following 5 1/2 weeks in a wheelchair. In another week and a half or so I hope to be in a moonboot so that I can walk like a real person and begin to use some of the great recipes I’ve found in your post.
At the moment our meals are subsistence rather than the usual gourmet–unless friends have felt sorry for my husband and me and brought their kind offerings.

This is going back a bit -to your Chive Flower and Vinegar concoction: I still have the beautiful little flowers sprouting here and there and I am relishing the chance to make the Chive Flower Vinegar! My question: I love the little flowers…anything ill advised at just leaving them in the vinegar? I have not made this before but plan to today. I am going to create an Allium Vinegar with many different flowers – same question: May I leave the flowers in the vinegar? Tried the tomato pie recently. Made it w/o the crust, to cut down on calories & to make it gluten free. It had a fantastic taste but, you know, gotta admit: Not a fan of the tomato skins. So, what did I do w/ this great-tasting mish-mash? I whirled it up in the blender, and it resulted in the BEST creamy tomato-basil soup EVER–unreal delicious! Gives the soup that roasted tomato taste with minimal time and no unnecessary dirtying of pots and pans.
I’m going to make the tomato pie again, specifically to turn it into soup–and how amazing would it be to whirl it up in a new Cuisinart? 😀

Hi, The get away for me is for an evening of great fun at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond, Va). The building, also art, is lovely setting usually with nice music in the background and great and varied great dinner choices, if you like. The landscape and water features – a perfect evening.

Celebrating 40 years this coming June. Went to ALASKA three weeks ago.
Enjoyed the fresh fish and beautiful temps. Got out of the 90 degree boil and rode the
Alaskan train for two days. Great fun!

I managed to get away to Alaska – went silver salmon fishing with my air force son and his family (even caught some), was there for the celebration of my youngest grandson’s 13th birthday (the only one I have been able to get away for), played lots of Cranium and laughed really hard, baked lots of hand pies and homemade pop tarts for them to put in the freezer and then came home to relax 8 hours before I had to go back to work. Would love a Cuisinart to make my kitchen work more fun and faster!!!

I never go anywhere during the growing season. I am managing my one third acre suburban property which is nearly completely in cultivation. There are hundreds of perennials, shrubs, trees, vines, tubers and loads of vegetable crops relying on me to keep them weed free, pick off pests, water when dry and generally admire them in their cycles of loveliness.

Happy Anniversary! We will be celebrating our 67th anniversary in December. I have an
Cuisinart food processor which has a piece broken from the back and when I use it I have to
hold down on the lid to make it work. A new one would really be great. We did have a 5 day
vacation in May to Williamsburg, Va., had a great time.

I did get away for a few days this summer. My husband and I went to the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina. Had a great time touring gardens, visiting the tea plantation and visit the incredible angel tree. I cannot wait to try your tomato pie!

I haven’t had a getaway in years. But, this summer hubby and I celebrate our 25th….so we decided to actual get away! We toured Montecello, in VA, then went up to WV for some great hikes. I gave two Cuisinarts to young people within the last month. My sister gave me one of those immense giant ones several years ago, so a normal-sized one now seems petite.

I can’t afford a get-away, but I am lucky to live in a place that is a destination for other people’s holidays: Vermont. We are retired so you think we could or would get away…but NO…. Then, in September we head to Mississippi for my uncle’s surprise 90th birthday party. So, we are busy for a while. Happy anniversary to you and your spouse, Kevin! My birthday’s coming up next week and this machine would be a lovely gift. 🙂 As for getting away, I went on the Amtrak to St. Louis, MO for a conference. This also involved connecting to light rail from the Amtrak stop in St. Louis to get out to the campus site of the conference. I LOVE rail travel. Got stung in four places on my left leg a few days ago (including twice on the ankle) by not a wasp but a bee. The swelling and itching was not responding to vinegar wrap so after a day switched to a baking soda paste wrap. Itching stopped after a day of that and swelling is almost all gone. Some of it was my fault as I forgot to watch out for them while moving wood at the edge of my garden. I hope you don’t have problems with bees in the wood in the beds in your garden. This summer has been beastly hot, initially with lots of rain and now a steady drought, but too hot to go weeding.

I have not gotten “away” this summer and probably will not. Not in the budget and actually, I am pretty happy to just hang out at home. I sometimes think that I am just this side of being a real recluse! But I love my neighborhood, my house and yard and being near my grandkids, so for now anyway I don’t feel a need to go anywhere. Now ask me next Spring and I might have a different perspective. Who knows? One day at a time.

This has been the year of the horse for me. We drove 350 miles to get my last horse I will train. I’m 61 now and figure she we last me the crest of my life. I Aldo rescued an old Percheron, the big ones and have a huge garden this year and been shuffling grandkids all over Montana. And as a child advocate talked to the Governor about the child abuse problem in our state. Off to Helena Wednesday yo picket in front of the Children and Family Sevices office in Great Falls. Did a little traveling, bought a new to me car and put 4000 miles on the first 3 weeks. Picked up my daughter and grandsons in Atlanta, GA (they flew in from Honolulu) and took them back to Dallas, TX Love Field. Visits to with friends and relatives along the way. We live in southern New Jersey, less than an hour from many beautiful beaches and beach towns. We have taken several day trips “down the shore”, as they say here with our grand kids. We have not gotten one bad beach day yet. Planning to go again tomorrow. A friend of mine does a “pool day” in her lovely back yard (you would love it) every Tuesday for a group of friends. We all bring lunch things and snacky things to share. My husband and I just sold our boat after being in boating on the Chesapeake Bay area for over 20 years, so we are really feeling like “fish out of water” this summer, but enjoying the things that the land has to offer too. We are planning a winter vacation, since we are having so much fun around here in the warm weather. I would love to win the food processor. The only getaway we’ve managed is a couple of trips to Fargo to see semi-pro baseball games. It’s our favorite summer treat. My husband and I will celebrate 43 years on the 19th! Can’t believe it has been that long. After raising 7 children to adulthood we now enjoy our 6 grand children. Two of them are our guests every Friday for the summer to save them day care costs. My summer turned out like so many in the past, recovering from injuries. Despite having torn my knee the end of May my friends took me along for a wonderful weekend camping at the coast :). Hi Kevin, I would not be entering this competition but for the fact that after over thirty years I replaced my original Cuisinart food processor with the 14 cup version that had the three bowls and I hate it. Plus, it’s already had to be shipped back for warranty work. Happily though, I love your blog more than I hate that thing. If I win I will give my existing one away to charity.
Your kale, lentil, sausage stew is now a stand by in my freezer. It’s better in winter, obviously, but we love it. As an English person I have never made biscuits in my over thirty five years in the USA, but I might try the tomato puree once our large tomatoes ripen. I did have a chance to get away for a few days this summer. I am a photographer and went to do a project at the Brickyard 400 race in Indianapolis.
I was a little fearful, because it was the first time this year that I left all of my flowers and gardens for my hubby to take care of for 4 days. We have 2 acres of land and gardens.
He did a great job! and the vegies are ripening like crazy now.

We have not been home much this summer. Our latest trip was to the Wisconsin State Fair where we ate the best Cream Puffs Ever. They make them in an assembly line and you cannot find a fresher or finer cream puff anywhere. We also enjoyed the Sheboygan Brats and fresh corn on the cob provided by the Lions club. I have the recipe for the cream puffs and I am looking forward to trying to make them myself, when we stay home long enough. Kevin, I love all the info you provide on your website, & I always look forward to your e-mails. This summer we made the big move from Alaska (Anchorage) to Ohio (Columbus). We drove the almost 5000 miles in 8 days – almost 5 of them going through western Canada. We were able to get away for a bit this summer! Last summer I was way to pregnant to do so but we have taken advantage this year. We have gone to a family reunion in Oklahoma, gone to Houston to visit family and have some fun, and took our boys (3&4) and the baby (will be one in three days!) on their first fishing trip. Everyone had a blast! We are settled down now for the summer since our oldest is starting pre-k in a few short weeks 🙁 on the bright side though, hunting season is right around the corner! 🙂

We didn’t do much of a garden this year because we are planning to move to a farm in the near future. We did two 10′ x 4′ beds with some old southern peas & beans from family members that passed away years ago. Well all the seeds sprouted and now we have a jungle of vines and a few volunteer cherry tomatoes. Eating has been good this summer. With all the hot weather the southern seeds are doing well in the mid-Atlantic region.

I’m writing from a campground in Dinosaur National Monument! It’s in a remote, dry, wild, and gorgeous area in NE Utah. We rafted through stunning canyons yesterday and saw big horn sheep, wild turkeys, and golden eagles. The day before we went to the quarry where hundreds of dinosaur fossils are exposed — giant skulls, long chains of vertebra, and femurs as tall as a person! Days are hot and nights are cold! Watched shooting stars last night as we sat around the campfire and told stories and laughed. Wish you were with us!

My get away this summer,I was and am the chairperson of the Illinois State Square Dance Convention. So on July 23rd,I ventured to Dekalb Illinois @ Northern Illinois University and held the 32 Annual Convention. Came home to fresh sweet corn,a few tomatoes and cucumbers. I don’t have a processor,so I use what I have. I could have used the processor as one of the raffles for the convention!

Last week took my 1984 Toyota Dolphin camper to Grayson Highlands State Park in the mountains in VA. The old Toy made it up those mountains with flying colors, as did my old (almost 70) body. Great – steep – hikes. And my food processor is also old, don’t really remember but over 30. Can’t get a new body, so would love a new Cuisinart. 🙂

Hi Kevin: Nope – no getaways this summer – at least not for more than a day or two. I can’t leave my veggie and perennial gardens for very long. But, I don’t mind – who wants to leave their garden when everything is at peak bloom and/or ready to harvest. I’d love to win the Cuisinart – I only have a mini one. I regularly make my zucchini/carrot/walnut muffins and I have to shred the zucchini and carrots. The mini capacity is so small that I have to do it in batches. Delish seafood at. great place on shore of Erie watching a gorgeous sunset. The ;2nd trip was all Missouri: St Joe (Pony Express started here)Chiillicothe ( home of SLICED BREAD– have pics of the painted buildings making that proclomation) Marceline-boyhood home of Walt Disney) Kissed a bigger than life engineer Mickey One evening went to a minor league baseball game (with 3 unintentional wrong turns into Kansas) Spent 3 hours at the Walter Cronkite memorial ; Independence featured a mule driven covered wagon tour, house tours, Westward Ho Museum and the pinnacle: The Harry S Truman Library. I saw picts and exhibits of things from my entire life–which finally made some sense to me!!! things I didn’t learn in school and put so much history in perspective. I will have to go there again. and the Cuisinart: sounds like the best form of “fast food” – so that’s right up my alley! cheers

Happy Anniversary. I was able to get away a couple of times this summer to Hilton Head, SC. One of the trips was a family get together. I have 5 daughters, 6 granddaughters, and 1 grandson. I just spent eight days in a tent while my son competed at the Wayne County Fair, in Michigan. He is an equestrian and had a good week. It’s a fun time but a lot of work because you have your horses to take care of, plus competitions to enter.

Well, I live in SW France, in the lovely Charente Valley, so I really don’t need to get away, though the odd foray around France yields some great delights, from landscapes to people, from food to local customs. So….I’ve wanted to learn how to handle and shoot a gun enough to play skeet and sporting clay ever since I was about 10 yrs old. Last November I joined a hunt club!! Completely out of my element……..never shot a gun, don’t know how to ride a four wheeler and couldn’t find my way out of a paper bag let alone the woods. I learned how to hold and shoot a shotgun, 12 gauge semi automatic to be specific. I then scraped up the money and purchased my 1st shotgun this past spring. Remington 1100. I love this gun. I learned how to shoot a moving target. Been practicing on skeet courses and 5 stands this summer. Been meeting some great folks in the sport and enjoying it very much. Can cross this off my bucket list now and looking forward to my 1st competition!

My trips consisted of going to the garden, then the kitchen and back again. My cherry tree produced enough for me to pit and pack 36 quarts for pies, etc. I made 10 before I moved on to blackberry pies. I wanted to make something with lavender and discovered your shortbread cookie dough recipe which I want to use with my cookie Stampers. Oh! We’ve also been enjoying fried tomatoes which takes me from the stove to the table and back.

Hi Kevin! I”ve just discoverd your website as I was looking for some information on winter sowing. I have a few seed that did not come up last spring and wondered if they were just old, or annuals that could not handle the harshness of my area’s winter. I’ll be trying again this year.
I have to say I love your website and have been exploring some of the fun things you do.
I have an extensive garden at the house I’ve bought, but am unfortunately on my 3rd year of battling goutweed. That plant is so invasive and hard to dig out.

Oh Kevin, I love this pie but had forgot about it since I haven’t had any fresh home grown tomatoes for a couple of years. 🙁 and I refuse to insult this pie with store bought ones. Want to make it to the farmers market this coming Sat. am and get some then. I would love to win the processor. Have developed arthritis in my wrists and fingers and chopping and mixing are a painful chore. Thank you for the great column and your wonderful sense of humor!!
I got to go spend a week with my daughter and her family last week and attended a Christian Women’s Retreat in Oklahoma over the weekend. It was great but very very hot!! Heat index up about 115.

I (we) already got so lucky (blessed really): last month we had a very special Family Reunion/ Celebration creating memories that will last a lifetime.
My family is fairly small and now scattered around the country. My mother (who now lives in Montana) just turned 93 and she has always spoken to fondly of here early childhood memories of summers in Michigan with her grandparents (even more so as frequently as she’s gotten older.)
So this year we pooled our resources and rented a house for two weeks in Michigan near where here grandparents had their summer cottage on the Lake where we all gathered to spend uninterrupted quality time together to share and make new memories. A number of old family friends in drove or few in to join us for a few days.
Since Mom has trouble walking and especially with STAIRS we prepared all of our own meals and spent as much time as possible out on a beautiful (and huge) porch with a lovely view of the Lake (and spectacular sunsets!)
The house had a pretty decent kitchen and a wonderful professional quality/capacity outdoor grill station; Michigan fresh seasonal fruits and veggies were in abundance and we ate VERY well (I brought along several excellent Kevin recipes, thank you.)
It was so wonderful to see Mom, at 93, so happy and basking in the warmth of her family and a lifetime of memories…
All in all ~ it was a trip/ vacation / celebration of a lifetime!

Thanks for your excellent page about growing garlic! We just enjoyed a huge harvest, and the rafters of our (north-facing) screen porch are filled with the curing bulbs. I noticed the bulbs varied wildly in size and I’m wondering if you have a recommendation for whether one should consume the smaller or larger ones first. Which store better, or is there no difference?

I’ve made the yummy but so sinfully fattening tomatoe pie twice now! This summer were were able to take the trip of our lifetimes, we flew with daughter and grand kids to Disneyland from Chicago. Our other daughter, husband and other grand kids met us there since they were able to drive there just a few hours. We stayed at an amazing, amazing house in Anaheim and went three days to the Disney California Adventure and Disneyland. Most of the other days were spent at the lovely rented home that had the most amazing pool and jacuzzi and the whole property was setup for both kids and adults. Disney opened when I was was 4 years old. I always dreamed of going and my old dream and that of the rest of us was fulfilled. Wish we could go again!
