LAST OCTOBER, I had lunch with one of my favorite writers — Ruth Reichl. Ruth is the former editor of Gourmet Magazine, the former restaurant critic for The New York Times, and the author of 3 best-selling memoirs. I have 2 signed copies of her poignant and witty second memoir, Comfort Me with Apples: More Adventures at the Table, to give away. Who wants to win one?
Details on how to win in a moment. First, watch this cool video of Ruth in action:

Kevin, I read her hysterical “Tender at the Bone,” and would love to read “Comfort Me with Apples,” too.
Kitchen gadgets I can't live without? Well…my food processor, my slicing mandolin, and my bread machine!
Brenda Johnson says
A good sharp knife, a side towel and my grandmothers mixing bowl- I can make pretty much anything with those 3 items in hand!
Becky says
A good knife, my 1-quart Le Creuset saucepan (with the lid that doubles as a small saute' pan), and a wooden spatula.
Being married to a creative type, I live with continual construction. When my kitchen is removed and (for example) placed on the front deck (in Maine, in March!), these are the items I make sure are never packed away.

That's easy. From this era, my hand held blender, which is a wonderful tool–however did I live without it? And the other two are from earlier in this century and both came from my Italian Godparents. My vintage Foley Food Strainer and my heavy, steel covered Dutch Oven. They don't make 'em like they used to!

Love Ruth Reichl, and miss Gourmet magazine!
Marble board for pastry (I can place it in the fridge to chill it)
Cuisinate food processor
Parchment paper – I use lots of it (for baking, and also for steaming fish)

my 90+ cookbooks, mother's old grater, and a beautiful knife handmade by my grandfather. I'm jealous your rhubarb is ready for the picking; mine is just peeking from the soil.

I couldn't cook without a sharp knife, a mixing bowl and a skillet. Those 3 items I use a lot. Thanks for having the contest!

Kevin, my 1928 Kitchen Aid mixer inherited from my grandmother-in-law, a very good sharp knife, and my VitaMix heavy duty blender are all in constant use for just about everything. I would hate to be without them. And I would certainly love to have Ruth's book! [email protected]

My three kitchen things I couldn't do without are:
All baking utensils;
My husband (he cooks);
My daughter (she bakes):
Which leaves me time to garden!
But I'm sure they would both love another foodie book – they are required bedtime reading in this house.
