Avery’s YouTube Debut

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | February 11, 2018 107 Comments

I had no intention of making this video public. Then Mr. Fox watched the 3-minute clip and said “You must.” So here’s an overly-emotional Kevin and a camera-shy Avery Ophelia Elizabeth!

Thanks for watching.

Your encouragement to adopt instead of buy is so important and I hope you continue to find ways to spread the word. Adopting can be scary as we enter the unknown world of our new found friend and yet it is so incredibly rewarding on so many levels. Thank you for sharing!

Kevin and Mr. Silver Fox, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for adopting a shelter baby. This is very near and dear to my heart. Within the last month, a lady I went to school with has rescued, and this is just a guess, around 60 dogs from 2 hoarding situations, not to mention others she has rescued as well with her Rescue Organization here in northeast Tennessee. One of the hoarding situations was up in the holler where I grew up, and I know he just took in these strays when they came around, yet never had them spayed or neutered, so there was puppies and puppies and puppies. Now these pups are being well taken care of and transported all over the place for warm hearted animal lovers like you to adopt! We have 3 rescue babies ourselves, and love them so very much. Much love to you, Mr. Silver Fox, and precious Miss Avery Ophelia Elizabeth!

Kevin and Mr Fox, Congratulations on the new member of your family 🙂 She is adorable. If I might suggest with such a regal name as hers she needs some bling lol. I am not the type of person that dresses up my animals (shudder) but in this case she can’t go around with a crown so maybe a collar charm in the shape of a crown with her name on it or even a braided leather collar with a few embedded rhinestones or a slider charm 🙂
https://www.etsy.com/search?q=dog%20collar%20crown%20charm < just suggestions or if you have a jeweler friend have one made.
I adopted a 13 yr old cat after my cat friend of 20 yrs died. He was found laying on his human companion who had passed away. I have a spiral bead cage charm with a crystal in it on his break away safe collar. He doesn't seem to mind it. He will be 17 this year.

    What a sweetie!
We had to let our poor old dog leave us this week- Luckily we have two others plus three cats to keep us steady. There is always a hole, but having pet friends to comfort us and keep the house rocking is important.
All of our animals are rescue pets and I can’t emphasize that enough to others. Mixed breeds are often healthier and in some cases have fewer personality problems as well.
I think you were wise to honor Lily by saving another puppy and brave to open your heart again!
    Enjoy your new family member.

Many years ago I got a call from a friend who worked at the local shelter begging me to come and adopt a dog there that had been hit by a car. The dog had recuperated but was not doing well at the shelter. I was looking for a dog so I went to see the him. He was about two years old and a cattle dog mix. In the visiting room of the shelter he wouldn’t come near me and each time I approached him he snarled. This was not the dog I wanted to bring home him but my friend begged me saying he didn’t have a any prospects for a home. I adopted him thinking I was out of my mind and the ride home with him continuing to curl his lip at me didn’t change my mind. That dog turned out to be the best dog ever and I have had many dogs over my lifetime. It took him a day to realize that he had a forever home and the snarling dog became my best friend. Good for you for giving that puppy a wonderful future.

Thank you for showing us what a lovely and elegant companion you and Mr. Fox have taken into your hearts and home. It’s not surprising she was wary and a little defensive when first meeting. It sounds like she had already gone through so many changes in her so young life that I’m sure she didn’t know what to expect from yet more strangers and places. It’s obvious how kind, gentle, patient and compassionate you and Mr. Fox are. She knows she’s now safe and well loved. I’m glad you all found each other.

My husband and I adopted our first dog last summer, a 6 lb. Chihuahua. Like Avery, he was a bit snappish at first (actually he’s still very particular about how you approach or pet him), but we’re so glad we decided to keep him. I never knew how much a pet could mean. We’ve always had cats, and I love them too, but dogs have so much personality and the ability to communicate with you, even if you can’t always figure out what they’re trying to say. I can safely say, I’m a newly committed dog lover and am so happy for you, Mr. Fox, and, of course, Avery.

Your loss and found truly moved me as I also worked through the sadness of losing a very long time best friend and swore there would never be another. Funny how we learn to get past it by bringing another lonely lost soul into our lives and how happy we all are to save each other! I hope people realize how important it is to adopt from shelters. There are so many loving and fantastic dogs who need us as we do they. Yes there are issues but that is also true of dogs from breeders. I adopted one and just couldn’t help myself so I adopted another and they are the best part of my day. I am so glad you took the plunge and best of love, licks and paws to all of you!

I wish you and Mr. Fox as many loving and joyous years with Avery Ophelia Elizabeth! She is beautiful, with the same exotic “eye makeup” as Carly! The “rescue” was indeed, of the three of you: great bounties of love to be shared out among you for all the years to come! Blessings on you all!

Thank you for adopting a shelter pet and encouraging others to do the same. They are just the best animals and really need to find homes. Enjoy your new family!

Dear wonderful Kevin! Thank you so much for adopting Avery! I have volunteered for rescue groups most of my life. I’ve fostered, I’ve driven miles and miles to get a puppy out of a kill shelter, I’ve done adoption counseling and I’ve had many foster “fails” where I’ve fostered a dog that I just cannot bear to part with. My two current dogs are foster fails. Mimi, an 80 lb. malamute mix is 14 and Willow, a 50 lb. Australian Shepherd mix who gave birth to her puppies in my bed is now 3. Adopted dogs are the best! Both my girls are the sweetest, most loving dogs and such joys to have around. Congratulations on your new family member!

I love her! Congratulations on the new addition to your family and thank you for loving a rescue. I am currently providing respite care for a foster family of a dog (meaning when they need to leave town, I care for the foster dog). She was a bait dog found on the streets of Miami as Hurricane Irman approached. Bitten up, scared and trying to care for a litter of puppies in a warehouse area — in the worse situation. The shelter said if someone didn’t step up and foster her, they would put her down as they were emptying the shelters before the hurricane hit. It took her three rides to get up to Melbourne Beach but she made it and got her new name: Bea ! She’s a mix between sharpei and yellow lab. She is now perfectly healthy and little over 2 years old. She loves cuddles and snuggles and walks. She does care for swimming (and we’re on an island!) Anyway, I wanted to share Baby Bea’s story to let you and your readers know how important you are in the life of a rescue dog and to thank you for adopting one.

Loved your video of AOE. She is adorable. Maybe she has some Husky in her! Please consider Whistle.com as added security. Our Husky mix is a real Houdini and Whistle’s tracker has changed our lives. We know immediately via texts if he leaves his safe zone and then GPS maps track him. Your fur baby is a very lucky girl.

She is beautiful. Two years ago we lost our beloved dog at the age of 13 and a half. We swore we wouldn’t get another dog. Yet, a few months after our dog died we were at the shelter getting another pup. I know he wold have been glad his death left room for another rescue pup. God bless you both for saving rescue dogs!

I am very happy for your house and you. I was the same when I lost my pup who I still miss too much today. My house needed a dog. I needed a dog. We got a dog. And in this case your dog needed you and your house too. We will see about the garden later.

Welcome beautiful Avery Ophelia Elizabeth! That is quite a name for a little puppy…Congratulations to all and lots of hugs and kisses. What a lovely video too. She looks quite content sitting with you. Rescues are the best – the question is often “who rescued who?” We too have a NC rescue – who looks remarkably like Avery! Unfortunately, because she is high energy, and we both work, she has turned into Mojo the Destroyer, instead of just Mojo. Chewing, yep. Stealing shoes, socks, in fact anything not nailed down, yep. At 1-yr old she is about 70lbs and tall, so she counter surfs – this morning she ate 15 Greek meatballs. Wishing you a, hopefully, better behaved pup 🙂

Thank you for letting us meet Avery Ophelia Elizabeth. I lost a dear dog in November to liver disease, at only eight years of age. I have two other dogs, but Woolie’s passing has left a whole in the family. So I understand your sadness, but applaud your bravery in “stepping out in love” to welcome another pet into your home. Blessings to you all.

I feel God’s gift to us are family dogs and cats. Back in the day when we were newly married we had a beautiful cat, Tio; then Bruno, the dog, from a box outside a supermarket (the love of our lives: we did not have children at the time and he was our “baby”) then Sandy (a beautiful lab). We adored each and every one. We are in our 70’s now and travel extensively so we are unable to provide for any animal. However, our son has a wonderful dog that we dog sit every opportunity!!!! Thank you for sharing a very personal part of your life.

Great dog, and so happy for you! Thought I would snoop around for a few minutes, because on of your bread recipes is in the oven…! Proofed way ahead of what I thought- so… in it went! We, too found a pup addition to our home, although I will admit, she has been quite a challenge. She didn’t realize she is home- we knew it first! LOL. She’s beginning to realize we are her friends, her family, she belongs, and she is becoming a little huggy, lovey girl! Glad to see you are still writing- and posting.

Dogs are wonderful, especially rescued dogs. So glad to hear someone influential with a large following recommending rescue dogs, so many people just don’t realize. We are living with our 3rd ex-racing greyhound and they make wonderfully graceful, lazy and affectionate pets.

Kevin, this is my first time commenting (long time lurker), and I just had to post a comment to say how CUTE Avery is!!!! I could not contain myself while watching this video. How could she not become a cuddle puppy within the hour when you give her such good pats and ear scratches! Thanks for adopting her and giving her a loving home, and for making this video public. So cute.
