As has become our tradition, we will be heading north to a relatives’ farm in rural Pennsylvania. Since we now are retired in Florida, this is quite a change for us, and much like climbing into a Normal Rockwell painting. We literally go ‘over the river and through the trees’!! The farm has chickens, dogs, a wood stove, and a warm welcome that exceeds all possible desire. We begin our trip into the past, by eschewing airplanes and automobiles, and taking a quieter, more old fashioned mode of transportation — the train!

For years, when my daughter, RN worked Christmas hours and lived out of our area, we had Christmas with her, my husband and son at a hotel in her area. My mom, the old traditionalist, loved to come over and be with us on Christmas. Her “can’t mess with tradition” only applied to Thanksgiving. We acquired a number of center folding tables over the years, wine bottles we had emptied were turned into lamps for future celebrations, Christmas TV, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, reading Best Christmas Pageant Ever in turns, huge Christmas stockings with crazy contents….it was excellent! Informal in nature,we could take a dip in the pool or sauna to help digestion (goes against all old wives tales) and enjoy ourselves completely. This year she flies back from Oakland to celebrate in our Minnesota cold (but smokeless) environs. Trying shabu shabu hot pot this year.
Tempe Croke says

Hi Kevin, As always my family will be gathering at my mother’s house here in town for a typical New England Christmas dinner and gift opening. There will be four generations there: my mother, my brother and I, my daughter and her two children. We will facetime with my other brother at some point during the day. My mother is 92, lives alone and still takes care of her house, gardens and two cats! The last two Christmases have been a little hard because I had cancer in 2016 and then was recuperating in 2017. (I am in remission. Yay!) And this year, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. BUT… we are all strong women and I will be staying overnight to help with most of the cooking and my daughter will be bringing desserts. We will just be very, very happy to all still be together at this wonderful holiday. (And there will be lots of family stories and laughter… there always is!) I hope your Christmas is warm and happy and full of laughter and good food, too. Take care.

This Christmas, I am either going to be waiting to give birth, giving birth, or spending the first fuzzy, sleepless nights back at home after giving birth!
Also part of our Christmas plans is CONSTRUCTION: my husband and I are putting an addition on our house (which includes a completely new kitchen), and they break ground in the next few days! We figured it was better to get it done while we have a newborn rather than waiting and being forced to chase after a toddler in a construction zone…it’s not like we’ll be getting any peace & quiet anyhow 🙂

Thanks for all your hard work through out the year. Best wishes one and all.
Mary W says
We watch the kids open their stockings and then we take turns opening all the presents. We have a great breakfast break then get back to the tree. The grand finale is the most fun – one person has hidden a special glass pickle somewhere in the tree and the first one to find it wins the pickle prize. In past years it was a mad frenzy around the poor tree as people reached and shoved and squatted and laid under the tree and it always took awhile to find. Prizes were usually a bunch of good stuff like a Chevy Chase ornament, glass moose mugs, cousin Eddy white dicky, a Mele Kaliki Maka lawn sign, needed tools, selection of cheeses, unusual pickles, and some sort of homemade trophy. Kids were not allowed to play since they had been visited by Santa and the adults got left out. They understand and usually laugh at us all. What fun. Love your natural mantle decor!

Happy Holiday season to you and yours and a big thank you for your videos.

We are having a quiet Christmas this year, with just my daughter and her husband. The adult grandchildren have all moved with their little’s, out of state. And my son and his teenage children live in Wilmington, NC, where Hurricane Florence hit this year. It’s too expensive to fly home this year, with all the expenses incurred from storm damage. We cannot go there, as my husband is still recovering from a bad accident, so it is a bit different this year. But we’re grateful that we are all alive and for the most part well. I would like to suggest, for anyone wanting to do something for those less fortunate this year, to consider sending gift cards to a family that is still living in a tent or a FEMA trailer this year. There are hundreds, perhaps still thousands in that situation. You can find a deserving family by contacting a church in the areas of NC, FL, and CA. Many have lost everything! If I win this mixer I will give it to one of those families. Thanks for the opportunity, Kevin.

As if I didn’t have enough family of my own, I do Christmas dinner with long-time friends, their children and grandchildren whom I have watched grow up. Linda’s mother & aunts are no longer with us, but we’ve grown from eight to fourteen + a couple of strays with no close family of their own usually turn up. After the potluck dinner centered on roast beef, we bring out the mystery presents for the traditional gift exchange game to play before dessert. Hilarity always ensues.

Happy Thanksgiving! I’m thankful for you and your inspiring ideas.
For Christmas…Well…we’re playing it by ear! We might have a last minute get together or we might sit and watch Christmas movies on the couch with popcorn and each other, watching the tree twinkle.
All I know for sure is our family is grateful to have a home & family as we live in Butte County, CA where the Camp Fire has devastated our neighbors and friends in Paradise, CA. We are forgoing gift giving and instead, donating the money to our friends and strangers who are now without everything. Some are without their loved ones…
Even your mixer, should I win, will be given away to my BFF’s husband who is newly inspired with domestication!
So take care of yourself and your loved ones, Kevin and you’ll have the best life ever!
Much Love, Sandy

Since my kitchen (and other parts of my house) was decimated by a broken pipe on 9/19, I will not be making a usual Christmas dinner this year – we’re barely back together and got turkey dinners from our local diner for Thanksgiving. We will not have a tree (they’re still working on the flooded and stained oak planking of the living room floor), but we will go to midnight candlelight service and have cocoa and open presents when we get home as always. I expect a hearty soup, salad and homemade cheddar cheese loaf will be our simple but happy dinner. What it all comes down to is: are you with those you love; and if you are, that’s enough. I would love to win this mixer, however, as it matches my new kitchen cabinets!

Its a feast of Prime rib, Yorkshire pudding, English mince pies and all the sides. Flushed down with wine, beer etc, and ending with a good bourbon. My husband is English, and my brother-in-law is Swiss, so there are many fun surprises but the basic’s are great American food with our loving family.

What fun to read everyone’s plans for Christmas Day.
I live in South Texas where it is usually warm and sunny. Here Texan purists have traditional Christmas Day food: tamales, enchiladas, guacamole, hot sopapillas with honey, usually sitting out on the patio.
And for those of us inclined toward caring for our neighbors, we will think of and make plans to help South of the Border refugees who are desperate to get to safety in the United States. Just as Mary and Joseph could find no room at an inn, these Hispanic people fleeing violence are not being welcomed into our country as they should be although all they want is peace and work for themselves and their families.
Donna says
Looking forward to spending Christmas with my sister.

Life changes and we have never made demands on our kids and their families to attend anything–it is their choice. We are happy to see them whenever they arrive.
My old 5 qt. Kitchenaid and all the accessories available at that time was a gift to me about 50 years ago. It was a surprise when I returned home from having gall bladder surgery—because my husband ‘missed’ me so much! It has performed beautifully the entire time, with only the “brushes”, (an electrical part), replaced and my husband did that. Of course, it is not quite as pretty as it once was, but I feel like it is a member of my family! It lives in my ‘working’ pantry.
Mike Martin says

I’m rostered for volunteering in the afternoon at our local Emergency Dept. in a large hospital so we will be having our traditional Christmas dinner in the evening. In ED I’ll wear my Christmas earrings and Santa apron as many of the staff will be sporting some kind of festive wear. In the evening our table will be set on the balcony which overlooks a golf course and we’ll have a glass or two of a crisp rosé with our Christmas dinner. As it is summer here and we have daylight saving it should be very pleasant with the expected temperature to be 24 c (75f), (which is much cooler than most of our Christmases here).

Cinnamon rolls with my twin grandaughter’s help frosting will start the day off with much love and stickiness! Then gifts all around for our family of 10, a yummy dinner of short rib cabernet stew over gouda mashed potatoes (cooked the day before) , carol singing round the piano, a wee nativity play by the children to remember the reason we gather to celebrate Christmas finishes the afternoon off right, and finally port and dessert over a competitive game of Pictionary.

We are very fortunate this year to have daughters home as well as friends. We were evacuated but did not sustain any real damage from the Woolsey fire, but have many friends who lost all. We lost friends in the mass shooting just the day before. This Thanksgiving and Christmas we celebrate the blessings we have, and know God walks with us in good times and bad. We often say « Why did this bad thing happen? ». But there are no answers, but knowing our hope is in Christ, and celebrate He birth, can give us something to cling to. New life , hope and Peace. We will reach out and as we can, help those who are hurting. Thank you for your beautiful receipes, blog and joy. Peace is fleeting when looking around, so keep our eyes focused above to see the light of a new day, new beginings and genuine touching others in love. Merry Christmas

Christmas morning my husband and I will have a casual brunch which we’ve done for years but this year the kids are grown and gone so it will be just the 2 of us. Christmas evening our daughter and son-in-law will come over for a casual ham dinner. We will open presents with them afterwards. It will be a quiet family day.
Sheri Rice says
Hi Kevin! We hosted a huge group of 20 for Thanksgiving, which gets us off the hook for hosting at Christmas. As we all get older we are more likely to stay home than travel, and we often get together the weekend before or after the holiday with my parents and brother. So we’ll likely cook fresh seafood on Christmas Eve, perhaps attend mass at Holy Hill, and open stockings or a few gifts that night too. Christmas morning we usually sit around in our pjs and eat stollen, drink coffee, and open gifts. I am hoping our stepdaughter is with us this year, but at 17 she’s busy. If the weather is nice and bright after gifts, we usually take a walk with the dogs across our property, maybe some ice skating or a movie if we feel ambitious. We usually have a relaxing and lazy day playing with our new gifts. I’ll cook a nice dinner in the afternoon, either turkey or ham. I can’t wait!! Merry Christmas to you and the silver fox.

Christmas Day, 2018…Here in Western PA, we are hoping for a “White Christmas!” We will get up, not too early (because we went to our beautiful Orthodox Nativity service on Christmas Eve and enjoyed our first Christmas feast of the year that night), and watch each other open presents from under the Christmas tree decorated with ornaments from the last 30 plus years and several countries. Even though our girls are older (teen and young adult), it will be wonderful to see their suprised/not so surprised reactions as they open their gifts. Afterwards, we will have eat our second Christmas feast of Greenberg smoked turkey (from Tyler, Texas), mashed potatoes, Greek salad, and other side dishes. After desert of pecan pie, we’ll all watch my favorite movie, White Christmas in our matching Christmas pajamas. We love the wonderful music and fabulous dancing! This Christmas I will host dinner. In fact, although I host Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve very often, I have rarely hosted Christmas dinner. My sister has hosted for years, but she has been out of her home and living in a hotel after a tree fell through her roof during a storm in March- 9 months ago!! Gratefully, no one was hurt, but the renovation had been slow going and it appears she will not be back in her home by Christmas.
We are Polish, my grandfather was a butcher, and food always takes too priority! Lately, Christmas dinner has been a roast – a NY Strip Roast has been the favorite- with a crab casserole. We smoke a ham, I make homemade pierogi, we will have my mom’s polish cucumbers with sour cream…I’m getting hungry just thinking about about it, and now it looks like I have have lots of menus to plan. Thanks for getting me to think about it!
Wishing you many blessings this joyful season, Kevin! Cheers.

Love you, your recipes, your website, gardening tips, everything!
My family and I had the perfect Thanksgiving, which maybe we’ll do for all our holidays. I hate to clean and my sister hates to cook, so I dragged all the food over to her house (with my niece). She lives a couple miles from me. She has a big dining room and beautiful collections of dishes, etc. so it works out well. It’s my favorite holiday and favorite meal to cook. The turkey came out surprisingly moist and delicious. Maybe cuz it was fresh? Don’t know. Didn’t really do anything different, just slathered on butter and oil. Even the gravy came out pretty good. That’s such an art. My only complaints were that my dressing (a Martha Stewart cornbread/sausage recipe) seemed a little dry and my apple pie was way too liquidy. Other than that, I am so thankful for my life, my God and my country!
Teresa B. says

Hi Kevin….Well, I am the 1007th person to leave a comment. Oh my GOSH. I know the chances of my name being drawn are very remote, at this point, but someone has to win, right? You just never know what miracles happen in this life. Well, Christmas Day is usually quite laid back around here. We will probably attend church (if we don’t go on Saturday) and just relax since most of our activities take place on Christmas Eve Day and in the evening. There is present opening and usually a big party at my niece’s house. It is always a most beautiful season, filled with goodness, abundance, and hope for all mankind because of the birth of that sweet, innocent baby King. May the holidays find you blessed and happy, probably in your kitchen! Susan

Hi Kevin:
I envy your readers who have already organized/finalized their plans for Xmas. Xmas is still a month away and it will take a lot of tweaking over the next few weeks to sort out all the facets of organizing Christmas day.
One thing I suspect I will be doing is cooking – but the menu has yet to be determined. Given the early start to winter this year in the “Great White North” (where I live) there is a good chance that snow shovelling/removal will also be on my To Do List for Xmas day.
That’s all for now, Nancy

Luckily, her job is local, and he is a music comp major, so chances are good that we MIGHT have them again next year.
Amy Dolego says
Every year I host a Christmas dinner for family and friends. Since I have an eighteenth century home, it’s the perfect place for a traditional New England Christmas and I always wish for at least a dusting of snow to complete the picture. It’s literally “over the river and through the woods” on a country lane. While it’s not a grand house (a modest Georgian), I love to decorate the 4 fireplace mantels which are all lit and we always have 2 fresh Christmas trees with special ornaments I’ve collected for many years. We give gifts to everyone who comes, even if they just stop by during the day since we always have an open house before the evening dinner. No one leaves without something to take away. But my most important gift to everyone is taking the time to create special dishes, from the hors d’oeuvres all the way to the desserts. Food is my expression of love.
Arlene says

Dear Kevin, This is a great chance to share AND ask a food selection question.
Keeping this Christmas dinner a simple meal as I am going through some chemo treatments and energy is ..well… limited – my hubbie is making Cornish Game Hens or Hen. Perhaps stuffed with rice, lemon and chardonay. I need to keep the veggies in a variety of colors so I will make your Green, Yellow, and Red Tian (ooo, la la!) followed with steamed spinach . And with my husbands help your Herbed Cottage Cheese biscuits.
Is this a ‘balanced’ flavor combo?
If you have an extra moment, could you please suggest a deeelicious and delectable dessert (perhaps an easy to whip together number?
AND What are you having for Christmas? DO TELL!
Thanks in advance for all your effort and loving food recipes you offer!
MERRY CHRISTMAS Kevin!! May Santa be extra generous to you!!
-Anne

My daughter spends Christmas Eve with me. We wear identical p.js, and I roll her long hair in rag curls. We exchange gifts and watch Christmas movies. The traditional food is Chinese takeout, but we’re flexible. We started this when she was about 5, and we haven’t missed a Christmas Eve in 24 years. This year there will be a fire. On Christmas morning, we’ll break into our Christmas stockings, then she’ll head out, still ragged, to have adventures of her own. I’ll spend the day in my pjs, light every candle in the house, crank up the carols, and phone/text/email friends and family. Maybe bake cookies. Maybe cook. Maybe watch snow falling. My son will arrive in a few days, and we’ll do pretty much the same thing… except the rag curls.
