I tell my therapist that if she wants to know my mood, all she has to do is look out the window. Spring lifts my spirits like nothing else. The fact that it is short-lived only makes it more precious. As Robert Frost put it: “Nature’s first green is gold/ Her hardest hue to hold.” But I think T.S. Eliot perhaps captured it best: “April is the cruellest month/Mixing memory and desire.” Spring is now, when past and future mingle in renewed hope.

Every day a new surprise in the garden. First the nodding yellow heads of daffodils, the muted tones of the hellebore, the pinks and white of the saucer magnolias. Now brilliantly colored tulips and the white iris. Roses and clematis sending out their buds. The most magical signs of spring are the birds, from the bright red scarlet of the cardinals, which seems more intense as well as the brilliant blue on the bluebirds, a tone down blue on the jays as well as the robins proudly flaunting their red breasts. I live on Florida’s intercostal and within walking distance to the gulf of Mexico beaches… the first day of Spring is really just a date on the calendar. We all know it is “season” because the snowbirds and Spring breakers descend on our area to enjoy all that we enjoy year round… sunshine, sandy beaches, fishing, golf and good restaurants. It’s good for our economy, but sometimes crowded with a lot more traffic…. We know it will slow down after Easter and the month of May is a favorite for Florida residents before the summer vacationers start coming down. That is why I enjoy your blog and all the pictures of your beautiful gardens and wonderful recipes. It’s an escape… keep up the good work, Kevin!

I LOVE watching for all the signs of spring. They actually begin in January if you watch close enough. But my favorites is watching for all the birds to come back and planting by the stages of the lilacs. Do you suppose that’s why so many farms have lilacs on them? The immigrants brought them over so they’d know to plant during the different stages of the lilac shrub? Or that’s my theory…..

Ah, Spring, there is such a freshness to it. The first sign of a crocus popping out of the ground. The first buds appearing on the Quince and Forsythia bushes just asking me to come in and be forced into bloom. My world is waking up again. There is yet another another chance to start anew and I wholeheartedly welcome the opportunity.
Happy Spring to everyone!

What isn’t there to love about spring? Birds are singing and chirping again. The trees are budding, the days are getting warmer and longer which means it’s closer to gardening season. The fresh smell after a spring rain, however here in the midwest, rain is the last thing we need. It is an awakening of nature from a long, long winter.

Hi Kevin. I love spring because once more I feel energized to get out and plant! Every year I say no more flower beds, because it is getting difficult to manage all the ones I already have, but I always seem to find somewhere to squeeze in one more. And my milk jug planters are awaiting one of those flower beds. Happy plantings.

My favorite thing about spring is the first bit of green poking up from tbe dirt. In my case it is the bright green ramps in the wooded part of our yard. Our ancestors must have sighed with relief to see greenery and know they survived a long winter.

Watching my yard wake up from it’s winter slumber. Daffodils, iris, redbud, mountain laurel and the wildflowers greet me for another year of enjoyment. Sitting out on the patio and hearing and seeing the geese fly north and watching the birds build new nests to raise their families. Baking a strawberry-rhubarb pie and using the new KA mixer to create other spring baked goodies (cupcakes and cookies, anyone?) Thank you, Kevin, for your generous give-away. Happy Spring to you!

Being able to get my hands dirty in the garden soil.

It’s warming up and the Orange Jasmine Tree has already bloomed and right beside it, the Sweet Almond Tree. Those perfumes are intoxicating.
