LILY (THE BEAGLE) AND I want to wish you a Happy New Year, and also to offer you a chance to win this week’s random drawing: a $50 on-line spending-spree at Wayside Gardens. After all, what better way to greet 2011 — and the spring which is sure to come — than with a gift-certificate for plants?
I can tell you that Wayside Gardens is a terrific mail-order source for rare or extremely interesting perennials. Over the years I’ve bought at least 40 ‘Green Giant’ Thujas from them; you might like their Wisteria ‘Blue Moon,’ which blooms three times over summer, or perhaps this brand new variety of (Cercis canadensis), called ‘Pink Heartbreaker.’ In any event, you are bound to find must-have trees, shrubs, or flowering perennials in their gorgeous, on-line catalog.
To enter the drawing, just do the following two things:
First, subscribe (if you haven’t already) to my weekly email newsletter.
Next, post a comment below. Perhaps you could mention a perennial you love. Or, simply say “hello,” or “I’m in it to win it.”
You’ll want to subscribe and comment soon…this drawing ends at 11:59PM EST on Thursday, January 30, 2010.
As usual, I’ll let Random.org select the winner.
Don’t miss anything at A Garden for the House…sign up for Kevin’s weekly newsletter!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Kevin! I just checked Wayside's catalog. If I win, I might order three astilbe 'Rhineland.' They're great for shade.
Sheila says
Kevin, merry and happy. How did I not know about Wayside Gardens? Whether I win or not, I'm definitely ordering their Clematis 'Betty Corning.' The flowers look like nodding bluebells. Just beautiful.

Hi Kevin! Merry Christmas to everyone! If I win I'll order some good indoor flowers. You'll have to advise me, of course!

and Merry Christmas to you Kevin… I hope you had a great holiday. Now it's time for me to start thinking spring! I've been saving so many plastic jugs for my winter seed sowing projects! I love “cottage” perennials such as delphinum, hollyhocks, and the good ol' bleeding heart plant.
Marlene says
Kevin,
This summer I had a huge coleus plant on my deck. Following the advice you gave to one of your visitors, I took it inside and now have a gorgeous coleus plant on my back window thanks to you!
I do have another question for you.Do you know of any tall, skinny trees which grow fast and I can use between my house and a neighbors. I don't have enough room for a bushy evergreen there.
Patty says
I love daylilies but am needing more shade perennials as my backyard trees get larger.
Sue says
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your tarte tatin recipe. I've always wanted to try that and have now made it twice using your recipe (except in a 10″ iron skillet) and it was the best I've ever eaten!

Queen of the Click – several such trees come to mind. I have these: Malus 'Royalty', Malus 'Sergentii', Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia – here a very fast grower); Yoshino Cherry (prune to control width).
I still love Thuja 'Green Giant' for year-round privacy in record-time. This one can be clipped to any size you desire.

Hey Kevin!
It's so exciting to see all the hyacinth's, amaryllis', paperwhite's, and freesia's roots develop in water. Thanks for all your advice. Next year I'll try to force tulips. And now that I've planted my bulbs and await my flowers, I'll begin winter sowing next week. Hope you had a merry Christmas. Happy New Year, Kevin!

I'm still in my winter wonderland phase of the year – appreciating snow covered trees and following animal tracks. In mid January I'll start longing for spring and planting season! A shopping trip to wayside will be just the ticket!

I can hardly believe the new year is almost here. When I think of favorite plants, I think of lilacs. I have 5 shrubs, but 3 came with the house and are ancient. I worry about how well they're doing. I love my daylilies too!

Happy Holidays to you and thank you so much for the chance! I'm already a subscriber. π I have been a bit under the weather and have been daydreaming about Spring for the past few weeks. Can't wait to see new blooms and plant some new things. I want this year to plant quite a few hostas as a lot of my backyard is in full shade. Thanks for the chance! π
