Buckets of tears were shed here over the weekend, as Mr. Fox and I said goodbye to Tiger the Cat. Tiger — an affable and extremely chatty female tabby — was 18 years old. She was a cherished member of our family for 17 years. We will never forget her.
Tiger was my constant companion on YouTube. There, for the past two years, she offered frequent — and often quite loud — commentary during cooking segments at “Kevin Lee Jacobs Delicious Living.” I’ll do my best to hold back tears while filming today’s recipe. The kitchen just isn’t the same without Tiger there, watching my every move.
She was popular on Twitter, too. The photo above was tweeted out as “Tiger relaxes after giving a note-perfect performance of Beethoven’s sonata ‘Appassionata’.”
We adopted Tiger and another cat, Camille, in 2004. Here they are, in 2016, cuddling together in the library. Camille is still with us. She misses Tiger as much as Fox and I do.
Tiger quickly accepted Baby Binky, the near-dead kitten I rescued a year ago. Binky and Tiger enjoyed breakfast together every morning.
Alrighty then. I’m going to have another good cry. See you soon. xKevin
Dorinda Uhl says
Awww, Kevin. I so sorry for the sorrow you and Mr Fox are experiencing. I had to go through this raw pain last year, now it’s a dull ache and I can now look at picture of my dear Tetra without falling into a puddle. Hugs to you all and extra time on a warm lap for the kitties who are grieving too. <3
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Thank you, Dorinda.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Kevin. May Tiger the Cat have a fantastic trip onward as he shares cooking, eating, gardening and musical advice to his ancestors. Your gardens will be well-watered with Tiger tears.
Lisa says
So sorry for how awful you and Mr. Fox are feeling right now. Many of us have been through this and we know what you are experiencing. Maybe remember that the depth of the grief we feel is maybe even only 50% of the love we shared with our beloved animal companions. Grief is certainly a measure of our loving bonds. You both gave her a splendid life, the life of an Empress!

Awww I’m so sorry ~~ it really hurts to lose a dear friend ~ I always called my “Tara” my best friend ~
Raine D. says
Oh, damn, Kevin. I am SO sorry! These wonderful critters give us such joy & friendship & pure, uncomplicated trust & love & then they go on to the next adventure much too soon. Just seeing Tiger’s photo at the top of this post made me start crying. We’ve lost 2 beloved cats in the last 3 years — one a 12 year old we’d only had for a couple of years, the other that we’d had since he was a palm-sized kitten 18 years ago. It just rips your heart out to lose them, yet I try to remind myself how blessed we are that we had the time we did with these incredible creatures that deign to share their lives with us. I read a line of poetry once — “my heart is trampled, the footprints of love worn into it like the hollowed worn stone stairs in ancient temples”. Mine’s been trampled & worn hollow by dozens of little paws & while I wouldn’t have it any other way & I know you wouldn’t either, you & Fox have my genuine sympathy.
Candace Geary says
Our beloved dog Betty passed away 5 years ago. I still cannot talk about her without crying. I’m not sure when or if that will ever change. It’s my grief and I don’t feel that I am on anyone’s schedule to move on. I have no words of wisdom as I know that you have been through this kind of loss before. Thoughts are with you and yours.
Susan Bingler says
From one cat lover to another: there is nothing that can cure the sadness that you are experiencing. Just keep remembering Tiger and all he gave you over the years. Lots of cuddling with your other kitties will help them and you, too.
Honeybee says
Dear Kevin and Mr. Fox, I am saddened to hear of the passing of Tiger. I have tears as I write this. We cat lovers are a special breed. Please give Camille and Binky some extra love for me.
Mary Laiuppa says
I am so sorry for your loss, Kevin. My deepest condolences to you and Mr. Fox.
This is the price we pay for having them in our lives. It is the balance of life. The sorrow is the price we pay for having years of their love.
Eighteen is a ripe old age for a cat and I’m sure she had a wonderful life with you. A better life no cat could hope for.
I’m a dog person. Unfortunately our life loves are with us for fewer years in general (although I did meet a 22 year old Whippet mix at the lure coursing last Saturday.
I’ll have Diana with me for 10-12 years if I am lucky and Freyja for 11-15 if I am equally lucky and the vet is accurate as to her age. But no matter how long, it is never long enough.
The only mistake God made was giving our feline and canine companions such short lifespans. But, if Caesar had lived a long as a human, I never would have had Ramses or Diana pawPrints or Freyja. I would still have Caesar but they rest may not have found homes.
Tiger has passed the baton to Binky. How lucky Binky’s life will be.
Rose Schnell says
Oh, I am so sorry. Big hugs to you all.
Linda S Lanham says
Oh Kevin, I am so sorry for your loss. I will also miss Tiger putting her 2 cents in when you are cooking. It always gave me a chuckle. Do not worry, she will still be around. You might catch her out of the corner of your eye, you might even hear her as well. 18 years is a long time, so she is forever attached to you and your surroundings. I have experienced these things from my own fur babies that have passed on. I hope you and Mr Fox find comfort and peace. God bless.
Pete N says
Kevin,
Very sorry for your loss. It’s never easy to lose a pet. As a fellow animal person (3 dogs, 2 bunnies, 3 chickens, 4 ducks, and 2 fish tanks), losing any animal that you’ve taken care of and grown attached to is difficult. Take solace in the fact that you and Mr. Fox gave Tiger a great life.
Pete

I know that when the time is right, we will all be reunited with our beloved pets. God bless you both.

I share your grief, and have done so many times before. Like Linda S Lanham, I have caught glimpses and sound bites of my pals after they’ve gone, like little friendly ghosts in the house. The essence of your gorgeous Tiger will always be part of you. The kind of love we get from our cats and dogs builds our own ability to love more fully. That is their gift to us. Love and hugs to you and Mr. Fox.

We really don’t ever forget the wonderful pets who loved and depended on us. Your handsome Tiger reminds me of my current-13 yr.old, Brownie, the most attentive and affectionate pet I’ve ever owned. I still grieve for my sister kitties who made it to 18 & 19.We rescued them at 3wks.old, taught them tricks and admired their Russian Blue traits.
I feel your loss like I my own. Yet so grateful to have had them in my life.
Amanda says
There’s nothing I can say to blunt the pain of losing a well loved kitty, Kevin. Our last two, Zoe and Darren, were both 20 years old when we “lost” them. Heartbreaking. Both times. And the same for those who came before them. I’d share their names, but don’t want to lengthen the post. I just love cats and always have. We now have only one who showed up (more likely was dropped off) as a 3-month old under our porch a year and a half after Zoe passed. Augustus (Augie) is a constant companion to both of us. We love him. Time heals, and memories help.
Mary v says

Janice in Vermont says
Kevin,
I can honestly say I share your grief. After 30 years I still miss my tortoise-shell tabby, who was with me for the best 18 years of my life. Named Anna Thomas after the author of the Vegetarian Epicure (though I am not vegetarian, but it was an important book for me). Anna wandered into my then- rented farmhouse, pregnant with what was probably her first litter; I became her midwife. She was a deeply affectionate cat and later attentive to my own babies. She came with me from upstate NY to Brooklyn and then Vermont, always hunting and gifting us with dead mice, bats, you name it, never content to be an indoor cat though willing to be well-behaved and house-trained—as long as she could have her outdoors “me time.”
You’ll never stop missing her, but thank goodness you have other pets to comfort you. And Mr. Silver Fox.
Thank you for all you do!
linda says

ellin pollachek says
The grief you and Mr. Fox are experiencing is known to anyone who has ever had a pet and lost s/him. Those people unfortunate enough to have never had the love of an animal can’t understand it but put in people terms, what would it be like to lose a 16 year old child? Pets are not simply accoutrements, they are family. Cry as much as you want. It’s a terrible loss. When I lost my bird after 15 years I thought I was handling it well until, 1 week to the hour of his death, I got dizzy and began vomiting blood and passed out. I was in the ICU for a week. I am so sorry for your loss.
Valerie says

I am so sorry. Big hugs to you and Mr.Fox. Tiger sounds like she was just a wonderful cat. I know she loved being in the kitchen with you because I often heard her vocalizing while you cooked on video. When I watch your videos, I do so when the house is quiet, but one of my cats, Samson. stays up with me. When he hears Tiger, he stares at my computer as if looking for her. Then he nestles in and purrs away as if calling for her. I think most recently this happened during your butter crust apple pie video. I still have not tried the recipe, but when I do make it, I will do so in honor of Tiger.
Rena says
So sorry for your loss Kevin, I feel for you and Mr. Fox, as well as poor Camille who has lost her companion of her own kind, of her life. Dear Kevin,
Catching up on emails and saw this. We lost our 18 year old cat Ally in August. We adopted her as a kitten when our youngest child was 2. She was the winner of the kitty Hunger Games at our house having lived longer than any other cat we ever had. My oldest is devastated as Ally was really her cat. These furry beings really do become such vital parts of our families. So sorry for your loss but we are right there with you.

Kevin, I felt that a made a new friend in mid-2020 in the height of my confinement misery, and not being able to visit with my elderly mother. You have been a very human, very lovely, and extremely calming influence in these last few years. Your style, grace, and talent are a breath of fresh air. I just now came across the video of Tiger-don’t know how I missed it. In December of 2020 I lost my 13 year old rescue kitty. What a gift our sweet fur babies are. Keep up the lovely works.
