SINCE READING MICHAEL POLLAN’S OMNIVORE’S DILEMMA, I’ve tried to avoid eating genetically modified foods. This has not been easy to do. For although other developed countries (the European Union, for instance) have either banned GMOs or required their labeling, the United States has not. Will you join me in telling the FDA that it’s our right to know what we are eating? You can do this with just one click:
Honestly, if the Food and Drug Administration can force Vick’s to cover its bottle of Nyquil (an over-the-counter cold-symptom reliever I had to take last night) with dire warnings, why can’t they mandate the same with genetically engineered food? By “food,” I mean everything from soda pop to frozen pizza. Even beef from the supermarket — unless it is labeled “organic” — was fed Roundup-Ready corn.
Speaking of corn, did you know that Monsanto’s GMO corn has been linked to organ failure in rats? Or that scientists recently discovered the herbicide(glyphosate) in genetically engineered corn is now showing up in our bloodstream and the umbilical cord of pregnant women?
I hope you’ll send a message to the FDA. And we can continue this discussion of GMOs in the comments below. Here’s a question for you: Do you think we as consumers are being kept in the dark by powerful corporate interests?

I agree there is no control over what goes into our food. Corporate interests appear to control
just about everything and consumers are left in the dark.

William Clarke – Nice to meet you. Seems like we need consumer advocates, no?

Dear Kevin,
I did it. I really beleive that many of the attention deficit issues kids are having today are responsible by what is in the foods they consume. We have a right to know and make our own choices.

despina – You are right. In the United Kingdom (NOT the U.S.), branches of Wal-Mart, Kraft, Coca Cola and the Mars candy company (who make M&Ms), have voluntarily removed artificial colors, the preservative sodium benzoate, and even aspartame from their products because these chemicals are linked to ADHD and other problems in children.
In the United States these same companies have taken no such action to improve their products.

Better yet: get rid of GMO's.
