Some Personal News

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | November 29, 2020 300 Comments

Hi everyone! So sorry I’ve been absent these past few days. Remember my foot issue? The swelling wasn’t decreasing, even when I used crutches to move about. After receiving three incorrect diagnoses from three doctors, I finally saw another doctor who said “Get thee to the emergency room.” Long story short, I had surgery on Saturday. And then I was discharged this morning. And what a “welcome home” greeting I received from Mr. Fox and Ms. Avery.

The fun isn’t over yet. There’s another surgery yet to come!

Needless to say, my postings might be on the sparse side during December.  Still, I promise to write and film as much as is possible. I have sooo many Christmas recipes to share with you!

Thank you for staying by my side. I love you!

Hugs, Kevin

recipes but that can wait – feel better and get some rest while you can.
    Wish you the best!
Tried you Butternut Squash soup for Thanksgiving (about the 5th recipe for that soup that I have tried – it was a HUGE SUCCESS – whole family loved it (no leftovers, darn it!)
BUT, my husband had to drive all over town to get the sherry. I insisted it HAD to be that
particular brand or the recipe wouldn’t be right and fortunately I have a very wonderful husband who said he didn’t mind the traveling – and he LOVED the soup.

Hi Kevin.. Wishing you a speedy and un eventful recovery. Just a bit of “advice, from a retired O.R.
nurse. ( Some how I STILL have this nurse hat that appears when I hear about medical “stuff”). Please be REALLY careful with keeping your pet kids away from your injured and surgical area. The last thing you need is a post op infection, and unfortunately, pets are often times carriers of “bugs”.
So don’t let them sitting on or being around your injured area.
Will miss your recipes and news. Time to heal, and get well!
Take good care, be careful, keep foot elevated, and let Mr. Fox take care of you.
Read some good books, sleep, and recover.

Sending love and light and healing wishes! Having been thru a broken ankle, my best suggestions are to follow the doctor’s orders! When doctor says things like ‘no weight bearing…’ follow that and your foot will heal much better and the way it’s supposed to! Also, as others have said, keep it elevated, that REALLY helps with swelling and discomfort. I hated crutches with a passion and found a device that was WONDERFUL and that enabled me to get around safely, comfortably and without the worry of crutches. It’s called iWalk 2.o and even makes going up and down stairs very doable! Link: https://www.amazon.com/iWALK2-0-Hands-Free-Knee-Crutch/dp/B00092RB06
I’m not going to try to explain – the pictures do a great job. Can’t say enough positive things about how this device gave me back my freedom to get around! Check it out. Take care of yourself and your foot and heal well and quickly!

    Kevin,
Be sure to take care and elevate that foot and stay off of it as you heal!!!!
(that is the mom/physical therapist in me.)
I’d also like to recommend pure silicone covers both the solid kind as a substitute for pot lids, and the stretchy kind for covering bowls. I was reading your boule recipe and noticed the use of plastic wrap.
With silicone lids you can banish plastic wrap and decrease aluminum foil use, help our environment and save money spent on one time use items.
I hope you will look into it.

About ten years ago , just before Thanksgiving, I broke my foot ( don’t know how) but didn’t know it because x-rays showed nothing at urgent care. After 2 weeks of sitting, elevating, medicating, icing, foot kept swelling, so this time to a podiatrist. . This time , x-rays showed . . . healing hairline fracture/ new bone growth. The doctor said that it was understandable that the break did not show on the first x-ray, because most x-rays are taken with no pressure on the bone, thus no cracking or separation showed. so I got a soft cast for a week, and then “the boot” for 6 weeks. The boot was heavy, and my leg got tired, so it felt best when sitting down with ‘the boot” elevated on an ottoman. Be sure to wiggle your ankle around to maintain flexibility, but NO WEIGHT on the foot itself. ( Like someone else said – former nurse here, putting in my two cents worth ). Foot is OK ten years later.

Kevin, I’m glad you found the right Dr and are on your way toward healing. I’m sorry I’m nosy when it comes to medical stuff. I’ve always been interested in this kind of thing. But what did they find? What surgery did they have to do? What is the second surgery? You don’t have to answer, i just have weird curiosities.
My poor niece almost severed her leg at the knee this past summer. It was only connected by a few inches of skin on the lateral side. Amazingly, they were able to reattach it. You should have seen the questions i asked this poor girl! And i wanted all the pics! Luckily we’re close and she already knows I’m ridiculous!

Foot surgery! You poor thing—I had surgery on both of my feet (two years apart), laid up 9 weeks each time. I HIGHLY recommend getting yourself a “knee scooter”. I was a total spazz on crutches, and the scooter was way more fun. I even used it in the elementary school I worked in. Be sure to get one with rubber wheels—for better traction. Good luck!

Take care of yourself, first, Kevin. Happy that you are beginning a road to recovery. And for as long as that road takes you, we are wishing you well all along the way and we WILL be waiting for your kitchen and gardening coaching with arms wide open when you complete this journey.
    Thanks for sharing with us.
On a different note, I belong to a quilt guild and our virtual meetings have taken us on a bit of a different journey. We have been sharing holiday recipes. I shared a couple and then I shared this note with my guild:

‘ I’ve been following this blog for about 3 years. Definitely worth signing up to. This guy is funny, down to earth and mostly uses products that we have in our homes anyway. He is a fabulous cook, baker and gardener and allows glimpses into his personal life. He makes you feel like he is your next door neighbor. I really enjoy his weekly posts and have made many of his recipes – almost always successfully. https://www.agardenforthehouse.com/ ‘

I consider you my friend from away. Happy healing my friend and Merry Christmas in your home.
