IF YOU HAVE A PROPERTY WITH A PATCH OF WOODLAND, you can have fun making a garden there just as I did. Here, in a slide-show, are some of the features and plants that light up this shady, romantic place: (Double-click the image below to start the show, then use the arrows above to move forward and back):

Kevin, Wow! I remember the photo gallery of this garden from last year. Looks like you've put a lot more work into the area.

I have one question: what is the name of the rhododendron behind the ostrich ferns?

Eric – according to my records, that rhododendron with huge, deep-pink blossoms is called 'Rocket.' I have 3 of them, and intend to acquire 2 more.

More pictures, please!!! That maidenhair fern is gorgeous – but is it hardy where you live? I have one as a houseplant!

Adele – How right you are! The nursery mislabeled the fern, claiming it is hardy in zones 3-8. The northern maidenhair, Adiantum pedatum, is indeed hardy here. Mine, as shown in the slide show, is the southern maidenhair, Adiantum capillus. In autumn, I'll have to pot this beauty up as a houseplant!

I have false spirea too! It's a beautiful shrub that turns 100 different shades of red in the fall. Mine is about 4 feet tall and wide now.

Kevin, you may very well rue the day you planted Forget Me Nots. My one plant is now one million.

Hi, Kevin, I found your blog while searching “Woodland Garden.” I'm presently turning a similar area on the edge of my property into a garden. I love how you kept a somewhat natural look to your garden. Also, I really appreciate your pictures of plants that will grow in the shade. Count me in as a new fan! I signed up for your newsletter.

Lorna – welcome to A Garden for the House. So glad you found the pictures useful. A woodland garden is a delight to have — good luck with yours!

Hope to see you around here again!
