Singing In The Rain Today

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | March 15, 2010 6 Comments

Last updated on December 2nd, 2011

AFTER A WEEKEND of 50 mph winds that downed trees and power lines (yet mercifully left my garden alone), I can hardly complain about today’s rain. In fact, I’m rather happy to be working outdoors this morning, cleaning leaves from the narrow borders in the bulb-garden. There, beneath the soggy debris, 100 grape-hyacinths are beginning to sprout. Playing in the mud…tidying the borders…seeing plants grow — these small things provide me enormous pleasure, even in the rain. Are you this way too?

Absolutely! Especially after a long, hard winter, I'm all for getting into the garden, even if it means my hands, hair and clothes get covered with mud.

Kevin, I'm exactly like you! I'm not letting the rain keep me out of the garden! All kinds of things are sprouting out there, including the perennial seeds in my winter sown containers.

Well, I'm so happy it's rain not snow falling that I'll cheerfully get soaked doing yard work.

I'm seeing all kinds of life outside, too. Right now even weeds are welcome.

If I only gardened on fair-weather days, my yard would be a disaster. I'm out there as much as possible, rain or shine.

    Hi Kevin,

Yes- I am a beginning gardner and was so excited to see the fleeing of the snow and the new growth starting in my yard! I walked around the whole yard admiring the many crocus blooms that actually turned out to be snow drops? I'm learning and luving it!!

Lisa – welcome. Glad to meet someone who gets excited (like me) over spring bulbs. Stick around…you shall soon meet a great many more of them!
