Saying Goodbye to Lily the Beagle

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | December 3, 2017 606 Comments

This is a sad day for Mr. Fox and me. We said goodbye to Lily the Beagle this morning. Lily, as most of you already know, has been my best friend and constant companion for the past decade. And thanks to this blog, she became an internet star.

Lily entered our lives under very unusual circumstances. You can read her story right here.

I will always remember Lily this way…

And this way…

And this way…

And this way.

Mr. Fox and I will never forget her. We’ve been crying all morning.

xKevin

Christmas Glögg!
Thank You

    Dear kevin and Mr. Fox,
Such sad sad news. I really sympathize with all you are suffering. Please know that sweet Lily has crossed over that little rainbow bridge to the “other side” where life is eternal, little treats abound, play companions are everywhere and skies are always blue. She will always be with you – loving you and watching over you both. When you hear a bump in the night just know it is little Lily trying to get used to her new angel wings! She will quickly learn to soar with all the other sweet angels.

Sending prayers for your healing heart.

Of course, she gave us much as she got (and maybe more), as our canine friends always seem to do. It always made me smile to see Lily’s participation in your cooking — taste-testing, hovering, wagging, grinning. A big virtual hug to you. We will all miss her.

Kevin, my heart goes out to you and Mr. Fox. I have been through this with five dogs and five cats, and it never got any easier. For many months after, it would still feel like they were going to greet me as I opened the door, or when I first woke up in the morning, before full consciousness, I thought they were there. They are all still in my heart and my thoughts, as I know Lily will be in yours forever.

    ‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.
    A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
    to be,
    And oh, to lose.
    A thing for fools, this,
    And a holy thing,
    a holy thing
    to love.
For your life has lived in me,
    your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
    ‘Tis a human thing, love,
    a holy thing, to love
    what death has touched.

So very sorry to hear of Lilly’s passing. She endured more than most and per the pics you posted, was a very loved and happy friend to you and Mr. Fox. We have a Peek-a-pom who’s name is Lily girl and she is now 10 yrs. old, being part of our family since she was 4 wks old, weighing only 11 oz. then. She needed constant care/nurturing until she reached the weight suitable for her survival. At 10, she now weighs 9 lbs. and we could not imagine our home without her in it. Bless her for fighting so hard to stay alive and God Bless you for the love, care and happiness you provided for her. Had the previous owner had kept her, I am sure her life would have been less than suitable for any animal. God works in mysterious ways and you were chosen to take her from the horrific life she had previously led. May she now rest easy

It was always such an extra treat when your posts included a photo of Lily, whether it was of her bravely looking out towards the woods to protect you from harm or her gazing adoringly at you while you cooked. The three of you were lucky to have found each other .

    Kevin,

You must rescue another dog ASAP. Lilly would want this—and you know she would. This will be the best thing to help mend your broken heart. You will never find another Lilly, but you will find a new friend that you will be amazed to love just as much. As a matter of fact, I recommend you rescue two—you get to select one and Mr. Fox selects the other. They will enjoy each other’s company and bring you double the joy. Please heed my advice. As the owner of five rescue dogs and three rescue cats, I speak from experience. Run, do not walk to the nearest shelter!!!

    Dear Kevin and “Mr. Fox”,

So sorry to hear of the loss of your Lily. I know in time you will delight in remembering your adventures with her. Beagles are wonderful and wise animals. I will tell you a story of my family beagle, “Nipper”. She arrived in my high school years, and always slept with me. As time went on and I grew up and married, there was that first occasion that I would be sleeping in my parents home with my new husband. Nipper of course wanted to join us. My darling husband famously said, “I haven’t slept with a dog yet (?????) and I am not going to start now. So sad Nipper was sent away. Early the next morning when my husband woke , and swung his legs out of bed, the landed in a “soft warm deposit”, with my beagle next to it, looking up at him …..needless to say, Nipper joined us in bed after that. Our pets are truly our family, and there is no truer love than that of a dog for her master. And since I have never made a comment on your blog before, I do so, knowing that angel Lily will get her wings!

CookieDog and I send our deepest regrets. Lily had a wonderful loving home and no dog could ask for a better loving family. I suspect with time she will send you someone new to help fill the space she left behind in your lives. Until then know that she isn’t suffering and is busy playing over the rainbow bridge. And she definitely got her puppy wings.

We had to put our precious, 14-year-old orange tabby, Willy, to sleep a couple of months ago. To this day, even though the memories are sweet, I can’t think about him without first laughing, then crying.
I leave you with a quote from C.S. Lewis-“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”
    Deepest condolences to you.

Kevin and Mr. Fox, loosing our beloved fur babies at any point in our lives is shattering. The hurt only lessens with time but never goes away. My only comfort, if one can call it that, is this enormous grief is the price we must all pay for their unconditional love. I am willing and have paid this price several times during my life. Kevin there are many abandoned fur babies out there that need your warm and caring home, just like Lily. When you are ready, make it soon, reach out and receive unconditional love in return. But like you we have many fond memories of Lily- her greeting us at lesson time, barking at the squirrels or competing with Camille for attention. She was a special soul and will be missed. I hope you can find some comfort in so many happy memories.

Dear Kevin and Mr Fox, my heart feels the pain you are feeling at present. My latest loss was my little recued silky, Trubshaw, 3 years ago. I did not wait till the pain of loosing him had diminished but within a week , we organised a new puppy. She will never replace him but she has filled the gap he has left. We love her as much as we loved him. Don’t wait too long to adopt an other one. Lilly would want you to do that as she knows that your heart is big enough to shower an other little friend with all the love you gave her. Lilly is now in that big place in the sky, playing with all the other little puppies, but will never stop looking down for you. Look up and you will see her in the shape of a star because she was a star. Take care and be strong. Love to you both. Xxxxxxxxxxx

There can be no heartbreak like that of losing a companion such as Miss Lily. . . my tears are welling up for you as I write this. A friend sent us the following when our Winston the dachshund died :
The Fourth Day by Martin Scot Kosins
If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you will always remember.
The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your young new friend.
You may have spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may have asked numerous opinions of many vets, or done long research in finding a breeder. Or, perhaps in a fleeting moment, you may have just chosen that silly looking mutt in a shelter … simply because something in its eyes reached your heart.
But when you bring that chosen pet home, and watch it explore, and claim its special place in your hall or front room – and when you feel it brush against you for the first time – it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through the many years to come.
The second day will occur eight or nine or ten years later.
It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth.
You will see slow deliberate steps where you once saw energy.
And you will see sleep where you once saw activity.
So you will begin to adjust your friend’s diet – and you may add a pill or two to her food.
And you may feel a growing fear deep within yourself, which bodes of a coming emptiness.
And you will feel this uneasy feeling, on and off, until the third day finally arrives.

And on this third day – if your friend and God have not decided for you, then you will be faced with making a decision of your own – on behalf of your lifelong friend, and with the guidance of your own deepest Spirit.
But whichever way your friend eventually leaves you – you will feel as alone as a single star in the dark night sky.
If you are wise, you will let the tears flow as freely and as often as they must. And if you are typical, you will find that not many in your circle of family or human friends will be able to understand your grief, or comfort you.
But if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through the many joyfilled years, you may find that a soul – a bit smaller in size than your own – seems to walk with you, at times, during the lonely days to come.
And at moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary to happen, you may feel something brush against your leg – very very lightly.
And looking down at the place where your dear, perhaps dearest, friend used to lay – you will remember those three significant days.
The memory will most likely be painful, and leave an ache in your heart –
As time passes the ache will come and go as if it has a life of its own.
You will both reject it and embrace it, and it may confuse you.
If you reject it, it will depress you.
If you embrace it, it will deepen you.
Either way, it will still be an ache.

But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day when – along with the memory of your pet – and piercing through the heaviness in your heart -there will come a realization that belongs only to you.
It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with each animal we have loved, and lost.
This realization takes the form of a Living Love –
Like the heavenly scent of a rose that remains after the petals have wilted, this Love will remain and grow – and be there for us to remember.
It is a Love we have earned.
It is the legacy our pets leave us when they go –
And it is a gift we may keep with us as long as we live.
It is a Love which is ours alone –
And until we ourselves leave, perhaps to join our Beloved Pets –
It is a Love that we will always possess.

Oh, Kevin. My heart goes out to you and the Silver Fox for the loss of your beloved, Lily. She was, indeed, your baby and always will be. You were her saviors, and she gave you love and joy in return, and that love and joy will stay with you; it never dies. We feel your pain and emptiness; we lost our two beagles a few years ago, and Roe, my husband, has said many times that he doesn’t think he can ever get another one. The pain is just to much to bear when they leave us to go to the Rainbow Bridge to wait our reunion someday. Since then we’ve had three beautiful Siamese cats; all are gone now – one stolen, the other two from cancer. Pets are our children and their loss breaks our hearts. It’s been said that”to love is to accept being vulnerable to pain”, which is true, but may love always win, because it fills our lives in ways we never dreamed it could or would. I will remember Lily and cheese…..a fun memory that makes me smile. Thank you for sharing.

Oh, the pain of losing our loyal furry family members. Lily was so fortunate you and Mr. Fox found and rescued her, especially given the horrible circumstances. No matter how many times I regretfully hear it, it tears my heart that there are “humans” who treat animals the way Lily was before your “adoption”. Whatever goes through their minds, the “owners,” who think an animal can survive traffic, hunger, thirst and all the other dangers a protected animal does not know how to navigate. I will NEVER understand why they can’t rehome an animal if for whatever reason their relationship doesn’t work???
I am glad you have many good memories with this loving hound. Take care.

I’m so sorry, Kevin. This made me cry. We, too, lost a beloved beagle girl, at a ripe old age of 16. She was an angel. And I miss her every day. Now, here we are about 3 years later, maybe 4, with another, rambunctious 14 month old beagle girl. It just never felt right here without that goofy beagle presence. My heart breaks for you and Mr. Fox. I always looked for your posts with photos of Lily. She was truly a star. Maybe she and our old gal will meet up in dog heaven and run and romp and dig and ahwoooo together. I’m sending you warm thoughts and condolences. This is so hard <3

Opened your email and saw Lily and smiled, like she always makes me, and then read the news. I know the shock and ache in my heart was small compared to yours and Mr. Fox’s. Just last night I was sitting around the kitchen table with my son-in-law, daughter and grandkids telling stories and laughing and crying about their plucky dog, Stewie, they lost this week to liver failure. Crying and time help. Please know that you never really completely lose anyone you truly love. When something funny happens, I still reach for the phone to call my grandma, then remember she’s not here but laughing with me anyway.

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Lilly was a friend to all your readers and having lost my best friend years ago, I know how hard it must be for you, also. When my Mom lost her best friend of 17 years, I told her to write down every time she felt sorrow – just a note that told of why that particular moment meant so much. Mostly it was common everyday things that hurt the most and she did write them down. Several months later, I brought over a scrapbook and copies of all the pictures I had of Mom with her dog. We wrote down what was in each picture along with why it was memorable which caused all the hurt now. Mom and I began with a good deal of grief but it ended with a smile as we had collected all those warm and happy thoughts together with the grief. It was so cleansing for Mom to talk about everything and provided her with a great scrapbook for her future happier days. We even had a few laughs together during our celebration of her dogs life.

    Dearest Kevin and Mr. Fox,
I am so sorry to hear of Lily’s passing. I’m heartbroken for you. She was a bright shining light in the world, and you gave her such a wonderful, extraordinary life. You were her angels on earth. I don’t know the Bible myself, but a good friend who knows the Bible well told me it says, “All creation goes to heaven.” I like to imagine my beloved pets in heaven on a beautiful, grassy meadow with a shallow crystal clear creek, and large shade trees. All the animals know each other and play joyfully together, and they are having too much fun to notice our absence. There is no sense of the passage of time for them. Eventually, when we show up, they’ll be thrilled to see us but not hurt that we weren’t there the whole time. And, when my daughter was about eight and we lost our adored mutt, Ivan, we also decided that for the dogs in heaven, there are slow squirrels made of cheese.
Hugs and kisses to you both.

I am so sad for you right now. I lost my beagle a few years ago who had been with me for 17 years. I cried for days. I didn’t even want to go home because he wasn’t there to greet me anymore. I so enjoyed seeing Lily in your videos and pictures because she brought back memories of Shilo. They looked a lot a like. What a wonderful life She had with you. They are amazing dogs!

Lily’s begging and constant presence truly made you both feel like part of MY family, if you can make any sense of that. I will pray that God (dog spelled backwards) may ease your pain so that you and Mr. Fox are able to focus on all of the wonderful memories.

The price we pay for our pets’ unconditional love is the brevity of their existence. The intensity of relationships between dogs and humans sustains both parties. Oh, I’m SO sad for you and Mr. Fox. Our fourfooted friends are just such special, loyal and loving friends. It is so hard to let them go. It feels like a big hole in our lives and is much too quiet and solemn when we enter our houses. I have had the experience of losing two special dogs so I know how it feels.

Take joy in remembering how special and loyal Lily was and in knowing that she is happy now and, I believe, watching over you both. Dear Lily, you will never be forgotten and always loved.

Kevin I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my “best friend” just one year ago and I miss him every day. He was a whippet, and a tremendous athlete, but in his last years, he had an injury that made it difficult for him to run or jump. I like to think of him in doggy heaven, once again chasing squirrels and catching them as he did in his youth. My heart goes out to you.

I am so very sorry to hear about Lily. I always loved the way you included her in your posts, and she always made me smile. As a veterinarian and cat mom, I know how hard it is to say goodbye to our beloved fur children. I don’t think that anyone can love us as unconditionally as they can. They enrich our lives so much and teach us so much, and we miss them so deeply when we have to let them go. For me, looking back at all the pictures and remembering all the joy they gave me and the wonderful lives I gave them has been the most comforting thing, not that anything completely make the sadness go away. I also think that our pets continue to visit us in dreams and in subtle ways to let us know they are still with us, just invisible. You can’t see them with your eyes, but you can still feel their presence in your hearts, surrounding you in their love. Sending you hugs and prayers.

    Dear kevin and Mr fox
My condolences for your loss of dear Lily
As a veterinarian I have helped many pets to pass on, and am often awestruck at the deep love and joy pets bring to us, and how much people can love their pets.
I heard a discussion on the radio a few weeks back, talking about the love and relationship that kind people have with their pets. The radio person said, ” loving a pet increases our capacity to love, and opens another window or door in our heart for love”
    .
Beagles also have so much character, they are both a hound and yet so sweet, plus so pretty and silky. I loved the photos you posted and I’ve always had a soft spot for Lily when you’ve included her in your kitchen and recipies
It’s also very clear how many people following your home and garden delights received so much joy seeing Lily!- she touched the lives of so many people. Thank you for sharing dear Lily with us and for giving her such a perfect home and loving family .

I am so very sorry for your loss. I took a few minutes to stop crying myself because through your words and photos I (we) have come to know the wonderful Lily. May this poem comfort
    you in the future:

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of all its beautiful colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows,
hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who were sick, hurt or in pain are made whole again.
There is only one thing missing,
they are not with their special person who loved them so much on earth.
So each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches! The ears are up!
The eyes are staring and this one runs from the group!
You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet,
you take him in your arms and hug him.
He licks and kisses your face again and again –
and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting
    pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be apart.

I am so sorry for your loss. After many lives of pets during my years each one brought me happiness along with sadness of having to say goodbye. It will be tough for you both for awhile but knowing that she gave you love along with you sharing your love sometimes makes it easier. Remember the good times. I hope you find a special place in your garden that she liked to be in for her final resting place. Place some special flowers or your favorite plant near by as a memory of her. It may sound harsh, but wait a little while and rescue another dog to give them a chance to a better life. My prayers are with you both.

I am so sorry for your loss. I might recommend an odd thing. When my brother died he had to be cremated. I took the ashes and sent them to a woman in new england who infused the ashes into beads that look like those sold as Pandora. I did the same with a hair from my mother and father at the time of their death. I fully plan to do this with the fur or ashes of my dog when he goes. I wear the beads on a necklace and somehow fell comforted these spirits are always with me. this is a Korean tradition though odd in the USA. Vangie, the bead maker had me write something for her to think about as she made the beads. It was a very strange, yet spiritual thing to keep these beings with me always in a way no one realizes but me.

I am saddened by your loss and my condolences to you and Mr. Fox. I had a beagle, Henry, who was a beloved member of my family, comforting me (and my children) through the loss of two husbands ten years apart. His mischief, zest for adventure and his affection brought joy every day, and I will never stop missing him. Dogs have soul and character as much as any human and deserve to be remembered— you have wonderful photos and stories to be told too, I’m sure. I know from experience that grief can be a bridge to healing, creativity and connection. Perhaps a visit to the late artist Stephen Huneck’s Dog Chapel near St. Johnsbury, Vt. will bring some comfort. Bless you for all you do.

I am SO sorry for your loss, Kevin and Mr. Fox! It’s awful to lose a furry member of the family.

We just went through it with our beloved long-haired grey kitty, Nico, who was just 11 and got very sick suddenly – within a month she was gone. She was like our baby and was the most empathetic creature we’d ever known. The void that she left was so great and it was literally the first time in my life I was without a cat to snuggle, that we ended up adopting another cat, a moose we named Sami. Two weeks after that, another one, this time a little squirrel of a girl kitty, Mia . They are both long-haired greys and while they certainly don’t take the place of Nico, they have brought joy into our lives and filled their roles as snugglers quite aptly. (I would never have thought I would adopt so soon, but I didn’t know what else to do quite honestly!)

Thank you for sharing Lily with all of us. We loved her too. The first part of her life was rough, but you and Mr. Fox made her last 9 years absolutely wonderful. I found this little poem that I hung on to when I lost my dog.
    MY GIFT TO JESUS
    by Jane L. Sears

I wish someone had given little Jesus a dog
as loyal and loving as mine
to sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes
and adore Him for being divine.

As our Lord grew to manhood, His own faithful dog
would have followed Him all through the day
while He preached to the crowds and made the sick well
and knelt in the Garden to pray.

It is sad to remember that Christ went away
to face death alone and apart,
with no tender dog following close behind
    to comfort its Master’s heart.

And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn.
how happy He would have been
as His dog kissed His hand and barked its delight
for the One who died for all men!

Well, the Lord has a dog now; I just sent him mine,
the old pal so dear to me.
And I smile through my tears on this first day alone,
    knowing they’re in eternity.

    Hi Kevin and Mr. Fox….
I’m very sorry for your loss…
I doubt you remember me and/or my wife Kathy, but we recently met at a wine tasting….in fact, I’m a neighbor. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet Mr. Fox at the time.
Losing a beloved friend and companion like your Dog Lily is a sad and painful time, but you will prevail. I’m pretty sure Lily wouldn’t want you to be sad for long, because it seems to me that her job was to lighten things up for you and Mr. Fox as much as she possible could for as long as she possible could, and I can tell that Lily took her job very seriously. Eventually, the heartbreak will fade, but the memories will always remain.
What a lucky dog she was to have been able to be with you both!
I’m truly impressed by all of the folks who have offered up their heartfelt condolences and have shared their own encounters with grief due to the loss of their own beloved furry friends. They sure seem like a bunch of good people and what I’ve seen so far, so do you and Mr. Fox. I’ve had the good fortune to have lived with many Dogs (and cats) over the years. Along with the good times, I’ve also been through tough and sad times with all of them at one point or another, but I wouldn’t trade the love and companionship they gave to me and my family for anything and I won’t stop taking on new friends until my own physical health prevents me from taking care of them.
As you know, there are countless Dog’s and Cats that need more people like you and Mr. Fox to be there for them and to make a place in their hearts and homes for them. I know you need some time right now, but don’t let fear or the memories of the pain associated with the loss of a wonderful friend override your compassion and ability to provide a fantastic loving environment and forever home for another furry friend that will most certainly be very lucky indeed to be with you both.

So sorry about Lily. It really hurts to lose a beloved pet. Our Maine Coon cats are 18.5 and 17 years old and their health is starting to fail. I feel blessed that we’ve had them this long, but my heart breaks when I think of the day they won’t be here anymore. Trying to steel myself. I can understand how you and Mr. Fox must feel and my heart goes out to you.

Oh Kevin….so sorry for the loss of sweet Lily! Better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all. I raise sheepadoodles, a mix of olde English sheepdog and standard poodle and would love to give you a puppy of your choice from any of my litters. I know a new dog will not replace Lily, but also know a true pet lover always has new love in their hearts for animals. When your ready…….until then, my heartfelt condolences. Peace

Dear Kevin and Mr. Fox, For those of us who love our furbabies, we can emphasize with the heartache that comes when these sweethearts cross over the rainbow bridge. Lily was so fortunate to have come into your lives, as much as you in hers. Life will be different, but you have beautiful memories of the joy Lily brought to brighten up your home and heart. Lean on that. Lean on each other for strength.

Dear Kevin & Mr. Fox – – I’m coming very late to the party, here; I’m bad about not consistently hitting your wonderful blog – but I came back today; And when I was flipping through your entries, I first saw that you adopted your new furry family member, Avery Ophelia Elizabeth – – and then flipped all the way back to when you lost Miss Lily; It’s late, but I wanted to give you my deepest heartfelt sympathies for your loss; But also congrats on your newest family member! I have absolutely loved your blog for several years – after a dear friend turned me onto you – and well remember enjoying pictures of Miss Lily ‘helping’ you out on several of your recipes; Miss Lily I’m sure is smiling down on you three, and I hope your hearts heal soon; Much love, P

I lost my beagle around this time too. I still miss him so much. I bet Lily was wonderful, she looks like a fine beagle. I’ll never forget my Billy, the “Beagle of Death Metal” and my heart has been broken since. This year for Dia de los Muertos I am making him a little remembrance altar. This might be a nice way to honor Lily too. Much love, Kevin!
