This is a sad day for Mr. Fox and me. We said goodbye to Lily the Beagle this morning. Lily, as most of you already know, has been my best friend and constant companion for the past decade. And thanks to this blog, she became an internet star.
Lily entered our lives under very unusual circumstances. You can read her story right here.
I will always remember Lily this way…
And this way…
And this way…
And this way.
Mr. Fox and I will never forget her. We’ve been crying all morning.
xKevin

Dear kevin and Mr. Fox,
Such sad sad news. I really sympathize with all you are suffering. Please know that sweet Lily has crossed over that little rainbow bridge to the “other side” where life is eternal, little treats abound, play companions are everywhere and skies are always blue. She will always be with you – loving you and watching over you both. When you hear a bump in the night just know it is little Lily trying to get used to her new angel wings! She will quickly learn to soar with all the other sweet angels.
Sending prayers for your healing heart.

Oh, Kevin, I’m so very sorry. When they go, they take a chunk of our hearts with them. Lily sure had a helluva appearance in your life that first day, and she knew a good thing when she saw it! Of course, she gave us much as she got (and maybe more), as our canine friends always seem to do. It always made me smile to see Lily’s participation in your cooking — taste-testing, hovering, wagging, grinning. A big virtual hug to you. We will all miss her.

Kevin, my heart goes out to you and Mr. Fox. I have been through this with five dogs and five cats, and it never got any easier. And I will remember her waiting for cheese!

‘Tis a fearful thing
to love what death can touch.
A fearful thing
to love, to hope, to dream, to be –
to be,
And oh, to lose.
A thing for fools, this,
And a holy thing,
a holy thing
to love.
For your life has lived in me,
your laugh once lifted me,
your word was gift to me.
To remember this brings painful joy.
‘Tis a human thing, love,
a holy thing, to love
what death has touched.

Joy says
So very sorry to hear of Lilly’s passing. She endured more than most and per the pics you posted, was a very loved and happy friend to you and Mr. Fox. We have a Peek-a-pom who’s name is Lily girl and she is now 10 yrs. old, being part of our family since she was 4 wks old, weighing only 11 oz. then. She needed constant care/nurturing until she reached the weight suitable for her survival. At 10, she now weighs 9 lbs. and we could not imagine our home without her in it. Bless her for fighting so hard to stay alive and God Bless you for the love, care and happiness you provided for her. Had the previous owner had kept her, I am sure her life would have been less than suitable for any animal. God works in mysterious ways and you were chosen to take her from the horrific life she had previously led. May she now rest easy
Monique says
By entering our hearts they make it bigger and leave a great emptiness when they leave us, making room for the next when they come along.
I’ve been privileged to share parts of my life with cats, dogs and horses, all of whom have taken a part of me with them and left something of themselves with me. It’s never easy but it’s so very worth it!

It is such a gift to have earned the love of an animal and each one enriches our lives in uncountable ways.

Kevin,
You must rescue another dog ASAP. Lilly would want this—and you know she would. This will be the best thing to help mend your broken heart. You will never find another Lilly, but you will find a new friend that you will be amazed to love just as much. As a matter of fact, I recommend you rescue two—you get to select one and Mr. Fox selects the other. They will enjoy each other’s company and bring you double the joy. Please heed my advice. As the owner of five rescue dogs and three rescue cats, I speak from experience. Run, do not walk to the nearest shelter!!!
Sue S says

Nancy B says
Dear Kevin and “Mr. Fox”,
So sorry to hear of the loss of your Lily. I know in time you will delight in remembering your adventures with her. Beagles are wonderful and wise animals. I will tell you a story of my family beagle, “Nipper”. She arrived in my high school years, and always slept with me. As time went on and I grew up and married, there was that first occasion that I would be sleeping in my parents home with my new husband. Nipper of course wanted to join us. My darling husband famously said, “I haven’t slept with a dog yet (?????) and I am not going to start now. So sad Nipper was sent away. Early the next morning when my husband woke , and swung his legs out of bed, the landed in a “soft warm deposit”, with my beagle next to it, looking up at him …..needless to say, Nipper joined us in bed after that. Our pets are truly our family, and there is no truer love than that of a dog for her master. And since I have never made a comment on your blog before, I do so, knowing that angel Lily will get her wings!
Elizabeth says

I’m so sorry, Kevin and Mr. Fox. We had to say goodbye to our little best friend, Roo, a Westie rescue, two weeks ago tomorrow. He was sixteen and he lived with us for 15-and a half wonderful years and had a terrific life. We are still crying. He was not just a dog, just a pet — he was a member of our family, and we loved him beyond reason. So my deepest sympathies are with you…I totally understand and share your grief. .Maybe someday, when the time is right, you will share your love with another furry person. My heart-felt condolences to you both of you. You gave Lily a wonderful life full of rich cooking smells and glorious treats from your oven!! It is so very hard to say goodby to a pet —– I find the grief last longer over the loss of a cat and dog, than from a family member. Maybe an “age” thing! I grieve longer for pets the older I get! Hold tight to the memories and the wonderful photos of her life that you have recorded!
Brenda Gauvin-Chadwick says

Hi Kevin! I have been a subscriber to your blog for years but this is the first time I’ve been compelled to reach out. Dogs are amazing creatures as they love us unconditionally despite the fact that we are just mere humans with all kinds of faults. My heart breaks for you and Mr. Fox as the paw prints they leave in our hearts are huge. I hope Lily went peacefully and that you and the Fox know that you gave her an exceptional life. You are in my prayers. Be kind to yourself.

Writing this with tears because although I can only guess at how you feel, I know how I felt when we lost our “Bucky”. It does get easier with time but, like with any lost loved one, the grief returns when you share someone else’s grief. Thank you so much for sharing her with us – her pictures always brought a smile.
Janis says
Dear Kevin and Mr Fox

So here’s the thing…you and Mr. Fox will see Her at the oddest times. Her tail going around a corner…a flash in the yard…it will drive you crazy as loving spirits always do. She was brought into your lives to connect with you and Mr. Fox…she’ll be around just in another way. My Maddie still shoves the door to the bathroom open (I had to feed her there so Moxie wouldn’t suck down her food.) Even with Maggie now ensconced in my life…Maddie still shows up. And I still talk to her!
Denise F says
Many comforting thoughts & hugs to you & Mr. Fox. I’ve been through the loss of wonderful animal friends so I truly understand your pain, which will become a little easier to bear as time goes on. Cindy Woods says
We had to put our precious, 14-year-old orange tabby, Willy, to sleep a couple of months ago. To this day, even though the memories are sweet, I can’t think about him without first laughing, then crying.
I leave you with a quote from C.S. Lewis-“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”
Deepest condolences to you.
Wendy Stewart says
I’m so sorry you’ve lost your little Lily. Thank goodness you all found each other and shared so much happiness.

You took excellent care of her, gave her a different life and she gave you back unconditional love. That’s the price we pay for being vulnerable, great love, great grief. It’s always worth it. This has to be the the largest number of replies you have ever received. I think you’d better be shopping for a beagle-sized Christmas stocking, and composing a note to Mr. Fox promising how you’ll be happy to dog sit for its lifetime.
Chris Thiessen says
So very sorry for your loss. Remember the sweet memories.
Lorena Keech says
I am so very sorry for your loss. Anyone who has a “furbaby” knows that we love
them as thoroughly as we love our human babies. And we feel the loss of a pet
deep to our core. I have loved seeing Lily in your blog photos and I’m glad I had
the chance to get to know her, if only a little.
Please know my prayers are with you.

Kevin and Mr. Fox, know that your Lily was a rockstar, and as such she will always be a rockstar in the hearts and minds of those of us to whom she gave her laughter and joy so freely. Many a day, Lily’s antics, celebrated by you Kevin with humour and love in your writing and photos, have given me a laugh and a smile when I most needed one. I am grateful to have vicariously known her, and for this reader, your little rockstar will always be an “is” never a “was.” <3
Kathleen says
Kevin and Mr. Fox, loosing our beloved fur babies at any point in our lives is shattering. The hurt only lessens with time but never goes away. My only comfort, if one can call it that, is this enormous grief is the price we must all pay for their unconditional love. I am willing and have paid this price several times during my life. Kevin there are many abandoned fur babies out there that need your warm and caring home, just like Lily. When you are ready, make it soon, reach out and receive unconditional love in return. Trust me they are always worth it. And, all my fur babies past and current have and do sleep with me.
Debbi says
So very sorry to hear of your loss. We said “Aloha” to our Buddy Brown three years ago this month… a year to the day of my beloved Dad’s passing. My Dad and Buddy Brown were best friends …. Oh how I will miss Lily! As someone commented, maybe she traveled over the Rainbow Bridge — might she be with the gods up in Valhalla just like in the first opera of The Ring Cycle. The gods had to travel over a Rainbow Bridge to get to Valhalla! Lily’s spirit will live on but I must say, I will miss seeing her from time to time and hearing about her escapades.
Dominique says
Dear Kevin and Mr Fox, my heart feels the pain you are feeling at present. My latest loss was my little recued silky, Trubshaw, 3 years ago. I did not wait till the pain of loosing him had diminished but within a week , we organised a new puppy. She will never replace him but she has filled the gap he has left. We love her as much as we loved him. Don’t wait too long to adopt an other one. Lilly would want you to do that as she knows that your heart is big enough to shower an other little friend with all the love you gave her. Lilly is now in that big place in the sky, playing with all the other little puppies, but will never stop looking down for you. Look up and you will see her in the shape of a star because she was a star. Take care and be strong. Love to you both. Xxxxxxxxxxx
Dorothy Brown says

I am so so sorry! Losing a family member and best buddy is one of the hardest things we ever have to do. Miss Lily had a lovely life with you both, and brought a wonderful sense of both whimsy and the regal to your posts. Remember; she is never really gone as she will always live in your hearts.
My sympathy to you both.
Diane says
There can be no heartbreak like that of losing a companion such as Miss Lily. . . my tears are welling up for you as I write this. A friend sent us the following when our Winston the dachshund died :
The Fourth Day by Martin Scot Kosins
If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you will always remember.
The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your young new friend.
You may have spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may have asked numerous opinions of many vets, or done long research in finding a breeder. Or, perhaps in a fleeting moment, you may have just chosen that silly looking mutt in a shelter … simply because something in its eyes reached your heart.
But when you bring that chosen pet home, and watch it explore, and claim its special place in your hall or front room – and when you feel it brush against you for the first time – it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through the many years to come.
The second day will occur eight or nine or ten years later.
It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth.
You will see slow deliberate steps where you once saw energy.
And you will see sleep where you once saw activity.
So you will begin to adjust your friend’s diet – and you may add a pill or two to her food.
And you may feel a growing fear deep within yourself, which bodes of a coming emptiness.
And you will feel this uneasy feeling, on and off, until the third day finally arrives.
And on this third day – if your friend and God have not decided for you, then you will be faced with making a decision of your own – on behalf of your lifelong friend, and with the guidance of your own deepest Spirit.
But whichever way your friend eventually leaves you – you will feel as alone as a single star in the dark night sky.
If you are wise, you will let the tears flow as freely and as often as they must. And if you are typical, you will find that not many in your circle of family or human friends will be able to understand your grief, or comfort you.
But if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through the many joyfilled years, you may find that a soul – a bit smaller in size than your own – seems to walk with you, at times, during the lonely days to come.
And at moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary to happen, you may feel something brush against your leg – very very lightly.
And looking down at the place where your dear, perhaps dearest, friend used to lay – you will remember those three significant days.
The memory will most likely be painful, and leave an ache in your heart –
As time passes the ache will come and go as if it has a life of its own.
You will both reject it and embrace it, and it may confuse you.
If you reject it, it will depress you.
If you embrace it, it will deepen you.
Either way, it will still be an ache.
But there will be, I assure you, a fourth day when – along with the memory of your pet – and piercing through the heaviness in your heart -there will come a realization that belongs only to you.
It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with each animal we have loved, and lost.
This realization takes the form of a Living Love –
Like the heavenly scent of a rose that remains after the petals have wilted, this Love will remain and grow – and be there for us to remember.
It is a Love we have earned.
It is the legacy our pets leave us when they go –
And it is a gift we may keep with us as long as we live.
It is a Love which is ours alone –
And until we ourselves leave, perhaps to join our Beloved Pets –
It is a Love that we will always possess.
Helene Willis says
Oh, Kevin. My heart goes out to you and the Silver Fox for the loss of your beloved, Lily. She was, indeed, your baby and always will be. You were her saviors, and she gave you love and joy in return, and that love and joy will stay with you; it never dies. We feel your pain and emptiness; we lost our two beagles a few years ago, and Roe, my husband, has said many times that he doesn’t think he can ever get another one. The pain is just to much to bear when they leave us to go to the Rainbow Bridge to wait our reunion someday. Since then we’ve had three beautiful Siamese cats; all are gone now – one stolen, the other two from cancer. Pets are our children and their loss breaks our hearts. It’s been said that”to love is to accept being vulnerable to pain”, which is true, but may love always win, because it fills our lives in ways we never dreamed it could or would. I will remember Lily and cheese…..a fun memory that makes me smile. Thank you for sharing.
Merrilee B says
So sorry to hear about Lily. It is hard to lose our pet companions as they are such an important part of our lives. Sending hugs.
Susan says
I am so very sorry for your loss, our furry children are so special. Unconditional love on both sides, from you to Lily and Lily back to you. You were the best that had ever happened to her and in time you will be able to remember her with smiles rather than tears. My own garden is now the resting place for four of my beloved kitties and I can now smile with remembrance as I pass them and one day you shall as well. Peace be with you both.
Helen L Olson says
My heart weeps with yours, Healing thoughts sent to you both,

Janet Carter says
Oh, Kevin and Mr. Fox, I’m so sorry! My deepest condolences to you both. I will miss Lily. It was always such a treat to see her doggy face in your photos. She struck me a such a gentle soul.
Sue Schenk Drobny says
Very sorry to hear about Lily. She sure had a good life when she stumbled into you and Mr. Fox! Some dogs are like kids, and some are like our spirit guides. I think maybe Lily was a little of each, and she is still around looking after you. She wouldn’t like to see you suffering. Take the time you need to grieve, then go on to live happily in her honor when you are ready. Thinking of you, knowing how this feels.
Donna says
Oh, the pain of losing our loyal furry family members. Lily was so fortunate you and Mr. Fox found and rescued her, especially given the horrible circumstances. No matter how many times I regretfully hear it, it tears my heart that there are “humans” who treat animals the way Lily was before your “adoption”. Whatever goes through their minds, the “owners,” who think an animal can survive traffic, hunger, thirst and all the other dangers a protected animal does not know how to navigate. I will NEVER understand why they can’t rehome an animal if for whatever reason their relationship doesn’t work???
I am glad you have many good memories with this loving hound. Take care.
Kris Fox says
So sorry for your loss, Kevin.
Paula M Harvard says
I’m so sorry she’s gone….our dogs make us better

part of healing has been done.

Debby McCarter says
I’m so sorry, Kevin. This made me cry. We, too, lost a beloved beagle girl, at a ripe old age of 16. She was an angel. And I miss her every day. Now, here we are about 3 years later, maybe 4, with another, rambunctious 14 month old beagle girl. It just never felt right here without that goofy beagle presence. My heart breaks for you and Mr. Fox. I always looked for your posts with photos of Lily. She was truly a star. Maybe she and our old gal will meet up in dog heaven and run and romp and dig and ahwoooo together. I’m sending you warm thoughts and condolences. This is so hard <3
Margaret says

I am so sorry to hear about yours and Mr Fox’s loss. This is indeed a very sad time for you. We have lost 4 beautiful Golden Retrievers over 35 years. You feel as if you’ll never be the same, but somehow they continue to live in our hearts and thoughts everyday. Lily was so blessed to have you and you to have her. She was a beautiful and lucky girl. I will miss her sweet face.
Phyllis says
I am so sorry for your loss!!! My husband and had to put down two labs over the years and we cried until we were sick. In fact, we still get emotional about our first dog, Bruno. He was our baby before we had children. Maybe another dog might fill some of the gap?? Lily will be with our Bruno and Sandy in “doggie heaven” – I believe it.

Opened your email and saw Lily and smiled, like she always makes me, and then read the news. I know the shock and ache in my heart was small compared to yours and Mr. Fox’s. Just last night I was sitting around the kitchen table with my son-in-law, daughter and grandkids telling stories and laughing and crying about their plucky dog, Stewie, they lost this week to liver failure. Crying and time help. Please know that you never really completely lose anyone you truly love. When something funny happens, I still reach for the phone to call my grandma, then remember she’s not here but laughing with me anyway.
Elizabeth says
My heart goes out to you both. Losing a beloved dog is one of the worst things I have ever gone through, so I know how you are feeling. People would say “you gave her the best life a dog could ever wish for” and believing that to be true, I got through the grief. It sounds like you gave Lily the best life a dog could ever want – so you, too, will get through this. After many more tears, though…can’t stop those!
Cindy Hormanski says
Oh no! I am so so sorry for your loss. Lily was adorable! I enjoyed seeing pictures of her during your cooking sessions! She will be missed by so many of us that became her friend through internet!

My heart breaks for you and Mr. Fox but your hearts will eventually feel full of happy memories of Lily. It takes time and she will be missed at Christmas. Be sure and put a little framed picture on the tree so you will always take a moment each Christmas to remember happy times spent together.
Best Wishes.
Gwen Feiten says
So sorry for the loss of dear Lily! Not a jolly time even here. My best friend and her wife just lost their little old man, Tiger. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Lilly was a friend to all your readers and having lost my best friend years ago, I know how hard it must be for you, also. When my Mom lost her best friend of 17 years, I told her to write down every time she felt sorrow – just a note that told of why that particular moment meant so much. Mostly it was common everyday things that hurt the most and she did write them down. Several months later, I brought over a scrapbook and copies of all the pictures I had of Mom with her dog. We wrote down what was in each picture along with why it was memorable which caused all the hurt now. Mom and I began with a good deal of grief but it ended with a smile as we had collected all those warm and happy thoughts together with the grief. It was so cleansing for Mom to talk about everything and provided her with a great scrapbook for her future happier days. We even had a few laughs together during our celebration of her dogs life.
Debbie says
So sorry to learn of sweet Lily’s passing and share your pain in letting go of a beloved family member…they are never just pets to me. Be comforted in knowing that you gave her the best 10 years of her life and she in turn gave you and Mr Fox the best 10 of yours! I will definitely miss hearing of her escapades and antics.
Carol says
Dearest Kevin and Mr. Fox,
I am so sorry to hear of Lily’s passing. I’m heartbroken for you. She was a bright shining light in the world, and you gave her such a wonderful, extraordinary life. You were her angels on earth. I don’t know the Bible myself, but a good friend who knows the Bible well told me it says, “All creation goes to heaven.” I like to imagine my beloved pets in heaven on a beautiful, grassy meadow with a shallow crystal clear creek, and large shade trees. All the animals know each other and play joyfully together, and they are having too much fun to notice our absence. There is no sense of the passage of time for them. Eventually, when we show up, they’ll be thrilled to see us but not hurt that we weren’t there the whole time. And, when my daughter was about eight and we lost our adored mutt, Ivan, we also decided that for the dogs in heaven, there are slow squirrels made of cheese.
Hugs and kisses to you both.
Martey Costello says
So sorry, sorry. You gave her a great home!

Anyone whose ever been blessed by the love of a dog will have shed tears for your loss. I will pray that God (dog spelled backwards) may ease your pain so that you and Mr. Fox are able to focus on all of the wonderful memories.

The price we pay for our pets’ unconditional love is the brevity of their existence. The intensity of relationships between dogs and humans sustains both parties. You have my deepest sympathy, Kevin, as nothing will fill the hole in your heart and the pain must be extremely sharp right now. Oh, I’m SO sad for you and Mr. Fox. Our fourfooted friends are just such special, loyal and loving friends. It is so hard to let them go. It feels like a big hole in our lives and is much too quiet and solemn when we enter our houses. I have had the experience of losing two special dogs so I know how it feels.
Take joy in remembering how special and loyal Lily was and in knowing that she is happy now and, I believe, watching over you both. Dear Lily, you will never be forgotten and always loved.
Lydia says
Kevin I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my “best friend” just one year ago and I miss him every day. He was a whippet, and a tremendous athlete, but in his last years, he had an injury that made it difficult for him to run or jump. I like to think of him in doggy heaven, once again chasing squirrels and catching them as he did in his youth. My heart goes out to you.
Andrea Schmidt says
Hi Kevin. On Oct. 28 this year, my rescue fur-baby Ms. Pumpkin (16-years-old), passed away as well. I have five other babies that was trying to help me through the grieving. My five-year-old fur-baby is a character. When he knows I am depressed or even upset, he will do something that will catch me off guard and make me laugh. My heart goes out to you and Mr. Fox.

Raina says
I am so very sorry to hear about Lily. I always loved the way you included her in your posts, and she always made me smile. As a veterinarian and cat mom, I know how hard it is to say goodbye to our beloved fur children. I don’t think that anyone can love us as unconditionally as they can. They enrich our lives so much and teach us so much, and we miss them so deeply when we have to let them go. For me, looking back at all the pictures and remembering all the joy they gave me and the wonderful lives I gave them has been the most comforting thing, not that anything completely make the sadness go away. I also think that our pets continue to visit us in dreams and in subtle ways to let us know they are still with us, just invisible. You can’t see them with your eyes, but you can still feel their presence in your hearts, surrounding you in their love. Sending you hugs and prayers.
Alice says

What a loving, delightful star that Lily. She always “stole the show” and we even got to hear her on your video. What a hard loss; my condolences to you and Mr. Fox. Losing a pet not only breaks the heart-it shreds it. How empty the house seems. Tears are still in my eyes.

Dearest Kevin and Mr Fox,
So sorry, wish I could hold you both to try to help ease your pain. We lost our sweet boy almost 4 months ago and still so sad here. I look at people with their dogs and wonder if they realize how lucky they are to still be able to touch them, walk with them, be in their presence.
For just one more day . . . So many of us are feeling your loss with you.
Rest in peace sweet Lilybelle girl.

Julie says
Dear Kevin and Mr. Fox,
You both have my sympathy. I got confused as others did and posted a comment after the story of Lily that probably hurt your feelings. My apologies. I’m not really computer savvy and was just in the wrong place and read Kevin’s encouraging comments. You can see other sympathy notes there, in case you’re not checking both Comments. I have been in your shoes four times in my life, and another one awaits in the future sometime. I dread the day. Our wonderful pets give us such unconditional love that we keep taking on such pain again and again. The joy they give makes it worth it. Take care, J.

Many tears shed here too over the years.
But also just as many wonderful times and laughter over a wonderful shared life.

sue says
Dear kevin and Mr fox
My condolences for your loss of dear Lily
As a veterinarian I have helped many pets to pass on, and am often awestruck at the deep love and joy pets bring to us, and how much people can love their pets.
I heard a discussion on the radio a few weeks back, talking about the love and relationship that kind people have with their pets. The radio person said, ” loving a pet increases our capacity to love, and opens another window or door in our heart for love”
.
Beagles also have so much character, they are both a hound and yet so sweet, plus so pretty and silky. I loved the photos you posted and I’ve always had a soft spot for Lily when you’ve included her in your kitchen and recipies
It’s also very clear how many people following your home and garden delights received so much joy seeing Lily!- she touched the lives of so many people. Thank you for sharing dear Lily with us and for giving her such a perfect home and loving family .

I am so sorry Kevin and Mr Fox for your heartbreak

I am so very sorry for your loss. I took a few minutes to stop crying myself because through your words and photos I (we) have come to know the wonderful Lily. May this poem comfort
you in the future:
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of all its beautiful colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows,
hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who were sick, hurt or in pain are made whole again.
There is only one thing missing,
they are not with their special person who loved them so much on earth.
So each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches! The ears are up!
The eyes are staring and this one runs from the group!
You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet,
you take him in your arms and hug him.
He licks and kisses your face again and again –
and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting
pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be apart.
Carol says
I am so very sorry to hear about your beloved Lily. I believe there is a special place in heaven for people like you who have done so much for an animal and loved her so much.

I am so sorry for your loss. After many lives of pets during my years each one brought me happiness along with sadness of having to say goodbye. It will be tough for you both for awhile but knowing that she gave you love along with you sharing your love sometimes makes it easier. Remember the good times. I hope you find a special place in your garden that she liked to be in for her final resting place. Place some special flowers or your favorite plant near by as a memory of her. It may sound harsh, but wait a little while and rescue another dog to give them a chance to a better life. My prayers are with you both.

Linda Cramp says
I am so sorry for your loss. I might recommend an odd thing. When my brother died he had to be cremated. I took the ashes and sent them to a woman in new england who infused the ashes into beads that look like those sold as Pandora. I did the same with a hair from my mother and father at the time of their death. I fully plan to do this with the fur or ashes of my dog when he goes. I wear the beads on a necklace and somehow fell comforted these spirits are always with me. this is a Korean tradition though odd in the USA. Vangie, the bead maker had me write something for her to think about as she made the beads. It was a very strange, yet spiritual thing to keep these beings with me always in a way no one realizes but me.

Janice in Vermont says
I am saddened by your loss and my condolences to you and Mr. Fox. I had a beagle, Henry, who was a beloved member of my family, comforting me (and my children) through the loss of two husbands ten years apart. His mischief, zest for adventure and his affection brought joy every day, and I will never stop missing him. Dogs have soul and character as much as any human and deserve to be remembered— you have wonderful photos and stories to be told too, I’m sure. I know from experience that grief can be a bridge to healing, creativity and connection. Perhaps a visit to the late artist Stephen Huneck’s Dog Chapel near St. Johnsbury, Vt. will bring some comfort. Bless you for all you do.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I loved seeing Lily in your posts and hearing about her antics. We will all miss her. I have a miniature schnauzer, Piper, whom I adore and yes she sleeps with me. I understand the hole that will be in your heart and life but cherish the love and joy she shared with you all and you with her. Blessings and beautiful memories.
Regina says
Such a sad day for you. Hopefully she is at peace “across the rainbow” running and playing freely. They are our most beloved 4-legged children. After losing 3, 2 cats and one dog in the past year and half, I let a friend convince to get another baby. She is part beagle and well loved by all here. I hope when your sadness has faded again, you will find it in your heart to “rescue” another much needed baby.
Tad Stanley says
I am so sorry. People who don’t have pets (and a few who do) have no idea how essential we become to each other. Lily was blessed that you found her. And you and Mr. Fox were blessed to have her in your lives.
Paula says
Our dogs’ lives always seem way too short, but Lily will be with you always, in your happy memories of your time together. What a lucky dog to have found the two of you. You gave her the life of a princess and I’m sure she repaid you for that many times over. I will miss her “helping you” in your recipe photos.

Dear Kevin and Mr. Fox, my heart aches for you. Only those of us who’ve loved our furry family members know how gut-wrenching and painful such a loss can be. My favorite after life tale for dogs comes from The book, Th Art of Racing in the Rain. At the moment of death, the old dog dreams of running fast and free across open fields and she is because she has arrived at the afterlife. My sympathy to you and Mr. Fox.
Amy Greenan says
I am SO sorry for your loss, Kevin and Mr. Fox! It’s awful to lose a furry member of the family.
We just went through it with our beloved long-haired grey kitty, Nico, who was just 11 and got very sick suddenly – within a month she was gone. She was like our baby and was the most empathetic creature we’d ever known. The void that she left was so great and it was literally the first time in my life I was without a cat to snuggle, that we ended up adopting another cat, a moose we named Sami. Two weeks after that, another one, this time a little squirrel of a girl kitty, Mia . They are both long-haired greys and while they certainly don’t take the place of Nico, they have brought joy into our lives and filled their roles as snugglers quite aptly. (I would never have thought I would adopt so soon, but I didn’t know what else to do quite honestly!)
Nicole says

I know your heart is broken right now. Please remember that Lily had lots of love from the two of you and lots of good “tastes” of people food. She lived a good life and you had her wonderful companionship all those years. How are you going to cook without her supervision?
I have lost two different “dogs of a lifetime” and now I have a little “street dog” that is a contender for that title too.
Your fond memories will heal your broken heart.

Sherry Pace says
Kevin, I am heart-broken along with you. We lost our beloved Smokey earlier this year so I know just how you feel. Lily was an enchanting part of the blog, and a terrific sous chef! I know she will live forever not just in your hearts but also in the internet! I saw your post about focusing on Lily and simply thought it was a bad patch; what a difficult decision you two had to make. I know Lily thanks you for the wonderful life she ended up having. She couldn’t have found a better, more loving household. I am crying and sniffling as a write this, nothing can heal the loss but perhaps one day, you will cry a little less, and laugh a little more, as you remember all the wonderful times you had together. Hugs to all of you from Willow Grove XO

I really, really feel for you and your partner. When we lost our rescue dog, Fred, after only six years, I lost two days of my life. I still miss him so much; we lived in England, and his very favorite place was the pub – we and everyone else had so much fun with him there!
I will miss seeing Lily’s photos in your blog.
Most sincere sympathies,
Addie & Richard Bambridge

Thank you for sharing Lily with all of us. We loved her too. The first part of her life was rough, but you and Mr. Fox made her last 9 years absolutely wonderful. I found this little poem that I hung on to when I lost my dog.
MY GIFT TO JESUS
by Jane L. Sears
I wish someone had given little Jesus a dog
as loyal and loving as mine
to sleep by His manger and gaze in His eyes
and adore Him for being divine.
As our Lord grew to manhood, His own faithful dog
would have followed Him all through the day
while He preached to the crowds and made the sick well
and knelt in the Garden to pray.
It is sad to remember that Christ went away
to face death alone and apart,
with no tender dog following close behind
to comfort its Master’s heart.
And when Jesus rose on that Easter morn.
how happy He would have been
as His dog kissed His hand and barked its delight
for the One who died for all men!
Well, the Lord has a dog now; I just sent him mine,
the old pal so dear to me.
And I smile through my tears on this first day alone,
knowing they’re in eternity.
Rick Fernandez says
Hi Kevin and Mr. Fox….
I’m very sorry for your loss…
I doubt you remember me and/or my wife Kathy, but we recently met at a wine tasting….in fact, I’m a neighbor. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to meet Mr. Fox at the time.
Losing a beloved friend and companion like your Dog Lily is a sad and painful time, but you will prevail. I’m pretty sure Lily wouldn’t want you to be sad for long, because it seems to me that her job was to lighten things up for you and Mr. Fox as much as she possible could for as long as she possible could, and I can tell that Lily took her job very seriously. Eventually, the heartbreak will fade, but the memories will always remain.
What a lucky dog she was to have been able to be with you both!
I’m truly impressed by all of the folks who have offered up their heartfelt condolences and have shared their own encounters with grief due to the loss of their own beloved furry friends. They sure seem like a bunch of good people and what I’ve seen so far, so do you and Mr. Fox. I’ve had the good fortune to have lived with many Dogs (and cats) over the years. Along with the good times, I’ve also been through tough and sad times with all of them at one point or another, but I wouldn’t trade the love and companionship they gave to me and my family for anything and I won’t stop taking on new friends until my own physical health prevents me from taking care of them.
As you know, there are countless Dog’s and Cats that need more people like you and Mr. Fox to be there for them and to make a place in their hearts and homes for them. I know you need some time right now, but don’t let fear or the memories of the pain associated with the loss of a wonderful friend override your compassion and ability to provide a fantastic loving environment and forever home for another furry friend that will most certainly be very lucky indeed to be with you both.
Patricia Crosby says
So sorry for the loss of your Lily. She would lick the tears away if she could. I’ll give my Kitty an extra hug tonight. Peace to you both.
Clare Oliva says
So sorry about Lily. It really hurts to lose a beloved pet. Our Maine Coon cats are 18.5 and 17 years old and their health is starting to fail. I feel blessed that we’ve had them this long, but my heart breaks when I think of the day they won’t be here anymore. Trying to steel myself. I can understand how you and Mr. Fox must feel and my heart goes out to you.

Oh Kevin….so sorry for the loss of sweet Lily! Better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all. I raise sheepadoodles, a mix of olde English sheepdog and standard poodle and would love to give you a puppy of your choice from any of my litters. I know a new dog will not replace Lily, but also know a true pet lover always has new love in their hearts for animals. When your ready…….until then, my heartfelt condolences. Peace

Rebecca A. Hamilton says
Dear Kevin and Mr. Fox, For those of us who love our furbabies, we can emphasize with the heartache that comes when these sweethearts cross over the rainbow bridge. Lily was so fortunate to have come into your lives, as much as you in hers. Life will be different, but you have beautiful memories of the joy Lily brought to brighten up your home and heart. Lean on that. Lean on each other for strength.
Beverly Oyler says

Dear Kevin & Mr. Fox – – I’m coming very late to the party, here; I’m bad about not consistently hitting your wonderful blog – but I came back today; And when I was flipping through your entries, I first saw that you adopted your new furry family member, Avery Ophelia Elizabeth – – and then flipped all the way back to when you lost Miss Lily; It’s late, but I wanted to give you my deepest heartfelt sympathies for your loss; But also congrats on your newest family member! I have absolutely loved your blog for several years – after a dear friend turned me onto you – and well remember enjoying pictures of Miss Lily ‘helping’ you out on several of your recipes; Miss Lily I’m sure is smiling down on you three, and I hope your hearts heal soon; Much love, P

I lost my beagle around this time too. I still miss him so much. I bet Lily was wonderful, she looks like a fine beagle. I’ll never forget my Billy, the “Beagle of Death Metal” and my heart has been broken since. This year for Dia de los Muertos I am making him a little remembrance altar. This might be a nice way to honor Lily too. Much love, Kevin!
