My Mosquito-Repelling Wristband

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | April 28, 2010 7 Comments

BESIDES A WATCH AND A WEDDING BAND, I never wear jewelry; rings and things interfere with my writing, gardening, and piano-playing interests. Nevertheless, I do wear a scented, bright-yellow bracelet while gardening at dusk. This odd bit of adornment is called the “Super Band,” and it keeps mosquitoes away:

Made of polyethelene that’s been saturated with the oils of Geraniol, Lemongrass, and Citronella, the Super Band repels insects naturally. I can tell you it effectively repels mosquitoes and gnats; the manufacturer, Evergreen Research, claims it keeps bees, yellow jackets and flies at bay, too.

My wrist-piece came from the Capital District Flower & Garden festival. A vendor there offered the trinkets for $1.00 each. Thinking guests would appreciate them during summer garden parties, I bought six. (Better to hand out bracelets than to candy-coat everyone with bug-spray, right?) The vendor suggested storing the band in a zip-lock bag when not in use, otherwise, once removed from the original packaging, the band’s maximum effectiveness is limited to 200 hours.

Where to buy the Super Band? First, check with your local, independent garden store. If they don’t carry the bracelets, you can order from Safety Company.

Kevin, thanks for this! I hate to put bug spray on my skin, the stuff smells toxic, and probably is. The bracelet seems like a safe alternative to the nasty stuff in “Off.”

I think I've seen this thing at a little garden shop in town. It looked too gimicky, so I didn't buy one. But if you say it works, I'll give it a try, Kevin!

Nice colors you're wearing, Kevin. Purple shirt, silver watch, and yellow mosquito repellent. You practically scream GARDENER!

I knew I should have attended the Capital District Flower and Garden Show! Sometimes the vendors have really cool stuff, like your anti- mosquito wrist wear.

Ann Flower – Would you believe I slept with mine on last night? I was sooo tired from yesterday's planting extravaganza!

Erin – Yes, it must have been the Dorothy Biddle booth. I'm sorry I didn't more at the time!
