African violets, or Saintpaulia ionantha, make a captivating window garden all by themselves — even when that window is in one’s bathroom! If only you could soak in the Victorian slipper-tub in this room, with a pleasant view of these everblooming standard, miniature, and trailing saintpaulia varieties. Flanking the plant tray on the windowsill is Narcissus ‘Erlicheer’ (left), and Mitriostigma axillare “African Gardenia” (right). Both are heavily (and heavenly) perfumed. Brackets: Tolmiea menziesii (left); Impatiens (right)Frame: Philodendron scandens. Photo: R.H. Blackburn (with hat-tips to Randy Hinz and Patricia Decker).

Beautiful – absolutely beautiful. Fill up the tub, and I'll be right over!

I love your window garden! Maybe I can do the same thing. Are your shelves glass or plexiglass?
Gardenlady says
What a great idea for a bathroom window, or ANY window in the house! Love it!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Holly – the shelves are made from glass. Thanks for asking.

I have to ask: what is the huge tree outside the window? A sugar-sap maple? It looks very old, and very sculptural in this winter picture.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Justin – that is a 200 year old Beech tree. It completely screens a corner of the property when in leaf from late April through early November.

Oh I love Foxes! I fell in love with them when I was walking on the Yorkshire moors and I turend a corner not looking where I was going and there was a Fox, it’s strange how we had both been minding our own buisness then noticed each other they are extremely beautiful creatures. He sort of looked at me then wandered off.I’ve never caught one on camera though! Lucky you It’s like an adapted tale of Goldilocks, dont go out leaving your porridge to cool down

Hi Kevin
I also like to use clay pots for my violets, however, I notice that, whenever a stem lies on the edge of the clay pot, it begins to blacken.
Should I change to glazed pots?
Thank you,
