Designer Erin Brady stopped by the house yesterday, with buckets of freshly-snipped stems in tow. Her mission? To produce a large, lavish July flower arrangement for the rusted cast-iron urn that resides on my entrance hall table. Erin used only flowers and greens acquired from her own garden (plus a few choice stems obtained from her in-laws’ garden). Naturally, I took pictures of the cast of characters, just in case you might like to produce a similar July flower arrangement for your own home:
Outfitting the Urn
Erin outfitted the urn in the usual way: with a plastic tub (obtained from the hardware store) and blocks of (thoroughly moistened) floral foam. The foam is held in place with green floral tape. (For more details, check out this video.)
Ideas for a July Flower Arrangement
Erin started the arrangement with hosta leaves…
And hosta flowers!
Who, besides Erin, knew that hosta flowers could contribute such beauty to an indoor arrangement? Not me!
Completing the arrangement is yellow Coreopsis…
Snowy yarrow…
Dark purple gladiola…
Orange daylily (not the common type, but a specially-bred variety)…
Yellow daylily, which Erin admitted she snagged from her in-laws’ garden…
Black-Eyed Susan…
Thuja ‘Green Giant’ (my one and only contribution to the display)…
And always-enchanting Echinacea.
Do you have at least some of these flowers and greens in your own garden? You might like to put the goods to work indoors. Arranged in a large container, the portrait of purple, pink, yellow and white is sure to please.
In closing, I’d like to say that Erin’s arrangement pleased over 100 guests who came to my home yesterday afternoon. The occasion was a “Celebration of Life” party for my dear friend DeGuerre Blackburn who recently passed on. I’ll talk more about DeGuerre in another post.
