This giveaway is now closed. Winners, selected by Random (dot) org: #17 Diane K; #50 Emily; #137 Laurel. THIS WEEK, I ordered (and received) a big box of bulbs from Easy To Grow Bulbs (dot) com. Of course, I ordered some nifty bulbs for you, too. Three of you can win a package of 10 ‘Lilac Wonder’ species tulips. And all you have to do is answer this question: What are you doing for Thanksgiving?
If you’ve never made their acquaintance, species tulips are the tiny ancestors of the tall, familiar Dutch tulips. You can plant them outdoors for spring flowers. Or you can plant them indoors for winter bloom, just as I do. More about these bright-flowered beauties.
Now, back to turkey (or To-furkey) day. What are your plans? Are you hosting a big bash for family and friends? Are you traveling? Or do you have to work that day? Whatever your holiday agenda, tell me about it in the comments field below. Winners, who will be selected at random, will be announced Friday morning.
Meanwhile, I’d like to wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is always “my holiday” to host…. I live in what was my grandparents house… built in 1840 (or at least that’s the earliest paperwork I have) and my children are the 7th generation to live here. All that said- it’s only natural that I would have Thanksgiving here! I’m expecting only about 10 for dinner this year… but there will be plenty of food if more folks show up! (The traditional turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc) Happy Thanksgiving to you Kevin!!!!!

We meeting family half the distance from each of our homes, and staying in cabins. It will be fun, but logistically a nightmare…..not only do we bring food for three days, but the utensils and pots and pans to cook it in….

Green bean casserole quiche, traditional stuffing, mashed potatoes with cream cheese and a fresh fruit salad. Of course yummy desserts including a slab cherry and apple pie and a pumpkin fluff.

Thanksgiving is my assigned holiday to host as well and we always eat it on my grandmother’s Autumn Leaves stoneware which I inherited. There will be 15-20 people here, and I’ve already printed out some of your recipes to try out on them this year. We do the dinner early (more like lunch) so my son and siblings can go to their in-laws for dinner. My parents usually stay with us and we warm up leftovers for dinner.

My mom is coming to Oregon for Thanksgiving and this year I have decided on a non-traditional dinner. My spouse and I like doing things different from the masses so I ordered a lobster feast from lobsternet.com. We will have lobster, lobster bisque, crab claws and cheesecake. I am also going to make home made pumpkin pie because it is my favorite.
After dinner we will take a walk around the neighborhood.
I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday

Spending the day with my three sisters and their families and a whole bunch of friends from all over the world. We will have about 50 people for our Thanksgiving dinner! I will be contributing peach tart and raspberry tart for the feast. Other sisters will make apple, pumpkin and chocolate pies, as well as herb bread and all the traditional turkey-day foods, plus a lot of vegetarian dishes for all of our vegetarian friends. We will make a lot of music and have a wonderful time!
Suzanne says
We’re sharing the day with family and friends, about 30 of us at last count. We have access to a closed restaurant, complete with industrial kitchen and table service. We provide our own food–everyone brings something special to contribute. I’m in charge of decorations (I have gourds, Indian corn, and pumpkins from my summer garden) and a couple of pies. This venue eliminates the need for any one person being responsible for all the work a large group at home entails.
Wishing all a happy and safe holiday.
Cherylann McGuire says
Actually we started serving at a local church and then eating there. Just the hubby and me at the house now. Bill said no sense in cooking a big meal for just us. Hopefully this helps all of those really hard workers who prepare the meal the day before that they can spend the day with family. It is a lot of fun for both Bill and myself. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

We always have a gathering of friends at our house, this year about 12. I make a giant batch of stuffing (chestnut/sausage/cornbread), stuff a large bird and put it in the oven at about 9am, then enjoy Oprah-inspired pomegranate martinis while watching the parade. We add all the leaves to the dining room table and set it with homemade ceramic dishes. The meal features lots of veggies, turkey, stuffing, gravy and many bottles of wine.
Since I am compelled to roast a large turkey every year, there is plenty left over for turkey sandwiches, turkey tetrazzini, turkey stir fry and finally turkey soup.

Eating (and making) lots of pie and giving thanks with family of course!

My youngest sister Chris & her husband Jerry stop on their drive down the mountain to collect our mother. They should arrive about 1 o’clock. We’ll start with Jerry’s steamed shrimp because they are Mother’s favorite. By about 2, the rest of the feast should be ready to serve: Roast Turkey, of course, bur this year slathered with mayonnaise a la Thomas Keller, individual cornbread/sausage stuffing ‘muffins,’ green beans for Mama, roasted Brussels sprouts for us, mashed potatoes & gravy, a salad of butter lettuce with persimmons & pecans. For dessert: minced meat hand pies (Jerry’s favorite) & pumpkin/pecan bars are a departure from the more traditional pie this year. White Zin for Mother; a Petite Syrah for the rest. Coffee with dessert.
And, of course, in the background Macy’s Turkey Day Parade, followed by the National Dog Show, with some football while we clean up. Through it all, Mother will regale us all with stories of the holidays of her childhood in the 1920’2 & ’30’s, all of which are more real to her than what happened last week, but that’s okay because we all love hearing about the turkey that her grandmother put in the oven at 4 AM & which no amount of gravy could moisten, nor water wash down.
Pam says
A friend is coming from out of town on Thanksgiving eve and will head back home Thanksgiving night. That carmelized root veggie pizza sounds so good, and she is Italian..so, for a non traditional meal, that might just be it! Intending everyone is enjoying food, family, friends!

My parents and my sister and her husband is coming over for the day! We each are bringing food – so no one had to do it all. Although there will only be 6 here I’m sure there will be enough food for 26! We are a family of cooks to be sure. Just wish my 2 borthers and thier familes would be here – but thankful for those that will be!

It will be just my husband and I and a little 9 lb. turkey, but I AM SO THANKFUL!!! He had a stroke last week, Saturday, and I just got to bring him home!!! His eyesight was affected, because the blood clot hit the back lobe of the brain which affects his sight, so he can’t read nor drive nor drive his tractor, (which hurts me because he loves his tractor!! And the garden we harvested and canned this past summer may be our last) but I am THANKFUL he is even here because the artery in the back of his neck is 100% blocked and they cannot stent that particular artery. Yes, I am scared to death, but grateful he is with me and I am going to make this day so special, without salt!!! Because it is possible after 39 yrs. of Thanksgivings together, this could be our last. I pray not, but, I am treating everyday like the last 1 and Thank God He brought him through this stroke! His speech IS NOT impaired, his movements and face, all got better. I only wish and pray they could fix that artery, but no Dr. will touch it, but I am thankful for every single day I have with him and hope next Thanksgiving he is still with me!!!

Well, I had my knee replaced on Tuesday. I’m recovering quite well, but am not up to the task of hosting anything yet. That said, I cannot let the holiday just pass. My husband suggested we have a quiet dinner for two at home, just relax, talk, watch TV, etc. But we discovered our neighbor is being abandoned by her kids this year to celebrate with their father and his new family. So, we asked her to join us. Then, one of her children decided he really wanted to be with his Mom after all, and will join us as well with his girlfriend. Then a neighbor on the other side mentioned that she and her son would be celebrating alone, so we of course asked her to join us… So far, the count of our quiet and intimate dinner has grown to 8+! But with good neighbors like ours, everyone will be pitching in and making the workload light. And, with everyone contributing to the meal, I am sure we will be experiencing some surprise dishes. I look forward to a good time being had by all.

This will be my first Thanksgiving dinner to prepare in almost 20 years, so we are starting it small. My mother, for whom I am HANC (Housekeeper, Activities director, Nutritionist and Companion), my husband, my youngest son and one of 4 brothers will be my guinea pigs, I mean my guests!
I’m thinking about your Harvest Turnovers and bacon wrapped Gissini, but mostly keeping it traditional with a baked turkey, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, gravy and some apple crisp for dessert.
My brother will probably bring his guitar, my husband will watch football and my son and I hope to go for a Walk-N-Talk so he can brainstorm the novel he’s writing.
Paula in Phx says
My family is all in Wisconsin so Thanksgiving like all holidays will be spent at home alone with my 4 footed furry friends.
Loren and Betty Housworth says
I have helped with Thanksgiving dinners as long as I remember, we were started young. I prepared my first Thanksgiving dinner, with guests when I was 18 years old. I had no assistance (didn’t want or need any) and had the whole spread from turkey, homemade dressing to fresh homemade hot rolls and dessert. I was fun and gave me such a feeling of accomplishment. I have cooked or helped with everyone since, but this year, due to health problems, my daughters and son are hosting and preparing and I am doing my best to sit back and enjoy. Now I feel the same since of accomplishment that they are willing and able to do it. So many younger people do not know the first thing about cooking, so I am proud and thankful for them!

I am hosting a Jerry Springer Thanksgiving this year. Our daughter and her girlfriend are at odds with each other, one son is bringing a new girlfriend for us to meet, one son coming from out of state for the 1st time in 3 yrs and is not bringing his wife, one son coming from out of state planning to move here possibly with his step brother, one son bringing his girlfriend and ex wife so they can visit their children that we have custody of and my non-imbibing mother in law and brother in law. I’m thinking of grinding up Xanex and putting in the dressing. LOL Send me some bulbs!!!

We’re going to my moms — I’m 2nd of 10 kids who are now in their 40s and 50s so it’s a big gathering of 30+. My fav dish is moms dressing — she makes her own french bread for it a few days in advance and it’s fantastic. Have a blessed holiday!

Wow! That brought tears to my eyes reading everyone’s plans! We are going to our daughter and son-in-laws for the first time… I usually cook it all so first year I’m just taking Texas rolls, my famous stuffing, and pie to share with kids and grand kids! Happy Thanksgiving Kevin and thanks for your gardening tips! 🙂

I miss the large “family gatherings” that use to be a given, but now, many years and many miles separate my hubby and I from than. But, that being said, although in smaller measure, we will still have our turkey and trimmings dinner here, than the tedious job (but worth every minute) of picking the turkey and the next day stock pot for the bones! And it helps so much the reach in the ref and just finding bowls of meat with no bones for those sandwiches or gravy and turkey covered bread. easier to get the rest into the freezer also! Hope your holiday is blessed!

They always expect great food from me.
Side note to Ellen: We just got back from vacation where we took Amtrak from Kansas City, Mo to Flagstaff, AZ. We loved the train. Have fun:-0

Ours is up in the air this year. A family member from another state has been put in hospice so our family that can take off work, is traveling there and the rest of us will have a small intimate gathering here. Hopefully at Christmas we will be able to gather the clan at one table.

I always host the Thanksgiving Dinner, but this year we are down to 4 people, so I am trying to make it more special by trying some different sorts of foods, from your french sandwich bread (yum) and your pumpkin pie, to some of my own homemade beet jelly and homemade apple butter. It made me sad at first to have so few, but gives me a chance to try out some new recipes and hopefully make it not so sad that there are so few of us this year.
Happy Thanksgiving to all! Regardless of what else is going on, we still have much to be thankful for when we take the time to see it. 🙂

It will be just the two of us (as usual) since we don’t have any family here but we’ll have brined turkey with chanterelle stuffing and local cranberries. Happy Thanksgiving Ken!

Wishing you and yours a happy and bountiful day.

THANK YOU for he ideas and motovation.

We enjoy the family meal with a wonderful smoked 21 -23# turkey that my husband brines ahead of time and then smokes. This year our group will be small as two sons and their families will be spending Thanksgiving with their in-laws. Nonetheless we use the left over turkey for soup, casseroles and lunch meat plus leftovers are taken home by guests. I also make the traditional stuffing and sides plus pecan and pumpkin pies. Christmas Day will be a repeat of the smoked turkey as it is our turn to host and everyone loves that smoked turkey! Thank you for asking. It is run to read what others are doing.

Well, I was going to go on about how I was helping my daughter in law host her huge family……..but then I read Billie Walker’s post above and I just dissolved into tears thinking about her and her husband……and what I’m doing doesn’t seem all that significant. If you were to choose me as the winner, I’d want you to send the bulbs to her. Much gratitude for your blog, Kevin!

We are traveling one hour south to meet with immediate family at my parents’ home, expecting about 9 people. My Mom will make her famous baked stuffing balls which are devoured instantaneously.
I am in charge of bringing dessert which will be Lemon Bars. Base is shortbread. I made them only once before, but they were KILLER !!! My husband and I ate the entire tray in 7 days. Recipe came from Ina Garten, but I looked for them on your site first !! I didn’t see them, and I hope I didn’t inadvertently miss them, because I love your recipes.
I may take a centerpiece, if I can scrounge up something interesting from the fading garden beds.

Deb Nelson says
We always have Thanksgiving at my mom’s. She used to do the cooking but now I do the majority of it because I have found a recipe that makes an awesome brined/marinated/roasted melt-in-your-mouth juicy turkey. I will be fixing the mashed potatoes, the dressing and gravy too (all from scratch), plus my famous “Chocolate Stuff” that I have to make for every family dinner if I don’t make a cheescake. I love to cook and try new recipes. I will try to incorporate the herbs that I grew over the summer in most of these dishes. This year will be a sadder holiday due to my middle nephew being deployed to Afghanistan the first part of the month. I with I could send him and his platoon some of the wonderful dinner that we will have. Please remember to keep all of our service men and women that are keeping this country free so that we can celebrate in safety.
And after reading the comments above, I concur with Susan, I would want Billy to have the bulbs. I love your contests and I try to always comment even though I am not necessarily commenting to win, I just love to talk!!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!

Looks like this Thanksgiving will be a casual, relaxed day of cooking and eating. Son, even though he is not a cook, has been assigned pumpkin pie, which he can make Wednesday evening, and mashed potatoes. He can participate in the prep AND watch his football. Daughter, a vegetarian, will hang out and co-cook the rest of the meal with me. Though not a vegetarian myself veggies are my favorite food group, so we make them all on T-day. Love to cook a turkey, too, for the follow-up sandwiches and soup. I’ve hosted many a 40+ guests Thanksgiving dinner in the past, with pleasure, but vastly prefer this toned-down version. Yum, I can hardly wait!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
PS: Son will be using your pumpkin pie recipe, Kevin.

After I give proper thanks for my wonderful life and the bountiful blessings I have had in my life, I will pause to remember Thanksgiving 2000 when we returned home with our son following cancer surgery at Indiana University. Since then, I have been blessed with 5 beautiful grandchildren. Against the odds, my daughter delivered triplets and my son has 2 boys now. I am so very grateful to have them in my life! Family means everything to me.
Since both of my adult children and their families are not planning to visit, I have decided to go non-traditional and small with my menu. I found a very simple beef brisket recipe for the slow cooker (crock pot). I plan to add slaw, rolls, and veggies for my husband and myself. This way, maybe I can feel free enough to take in some if the great sales this year…..which I have not done in decades. I am usually in the kitchen all weekend. That’s my plan! Happy Thanksgiving to you!

My daughter and myself will be having Thanksgiving dinner together. My husband, her father passed away in March and this is our first Thanksgiving without him. She is recuperating from shoulder surgery , which is coming along beautifully. I am thankful to have her as my support. My son and other daughter live out of state and are unable to join us.
We’re going to have turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, squash from the garden, cranberry sauce, cole slaw, rolls & butter and pumpkins pie with whipped cream for dessert.
I love your website and look forward to the emails. I learn something every time.
God bless you and your loved ones.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Kevin! Species tulips are so beautiful, I used to have T. Tarda in my garden when I lived back East, sweet, wee and prolific. My partner and I are spending the day with a friend, I’m cooking. They’re having a brined fresh free range turkey with a spice rub, stuffing, and sides of baked vegetables, Brussels sprouts with carrots and walnuts and sweet potatoes in foil, served a jus. Also baking pies for them, lemon meringue and coconut cream, in pate brisee of course. For myself, perhaps a stuffed squash, crudites with a vegan caesar dip, Waldorf salad and a raw pumpkin pie. Enjoy your holiday! Many blessings.

Working, but it’s all good. Working the hotline for Diabetes Insulin Pumps hotline. especially important on this day, since many new users aren’t yet sure of how much insulin to use with the increased food intake, or need help with computing the grams, or perhaps the pump isn’t working the way it should.
Solve problems…save lives!
Thank goodness for old traditions, and new technology, that allow us all to have a relaxing holiday!
The wonderful recipies that you have provided will be put to use this weekend!
Happy Thanksgiving…with gratitude!

This is the first Thanksgiving since my husband’s mother passed away, and we had always had it at her house. SO I’m starting new traditions. An organic, free-range turkey, wine-infused gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing with ital sausage and walnuts, cranberries with gran marnier, apricots & orange peel, pumpkin cheesecake, local camembert, green beans & almonds, prosecco. The table will have the bronzey pheasants from my mother-in-law, her Tiffany candles, and a gold-peach-pink arrangement of roses. We will miss her, but I am so thankful for the people I love.

2 of my 3 kids are coming over for dinner. My son is bringing his wife and their 22 month old son with them. He will stop and pick up his younger sister on the way over. Still hoping child #1 feels well enough to ride for an hour and brings hubby and their two little ones. However, since their daughter will only be 2 weeks old by then, she may not be up to the trip.

Sadly, I’m spending thanksgiving all alone. My husband passed away 3 years ago and my son is grown and in a different city. I’m fixing a small turkey breast that I will share with my 2 cats and my dog.

Hosting dinner for 12 family and friends. Traditional menu plus a deep fried turkey that my husband will do outdoors. This year’s theme is Cowboys and Indians. Guests can dress according to which “side” they choose. We’ll play pin-the-tail on the buffalo, maybe have a lasso competition, listen to Audie Murphy songs., etc. Just enjoy our bounty and good fellowship!!

My two daughters and their families need to be at their inlaws on Thanksgiving, so I will have them at my house for Thanksgiving on Friday. Likely, I will be still cooking on Thursday! I am looking forward to having them all here, especially my three little grandsons–twins, 22 mos. and singleton, 1 yr. (just celebrated is birthday yesterday. Hopefully the start of a tradition for them. Although my oldest daughter and my friend who will be here are vegetarian, I will cook a turkey. But, I also fix alternative dishes like salmon loaf and deviled eggs for those who don’t eat meat. We traditionally have bread dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, butternut squash, cranberry salad and cranberry bread, plus apple and pumpkin pie. Pretty simple, but yummy.

Oh, yes, and of course the requisite green bean casserole. But I always do fresh green beans, sautee extra mushrooms to use with organic mushroom soup and add slivered almonds. Sometimes I top with onion rings or I use just bread crumbs. Most importantly I make sure the beans are not over-cooked and mushy-grey. Have you ever had this dish like that? Yes? Bad, right?!

Sharing the day with close friends at our cabin in the woods. We have so much to be thankful for!! Happy Thanksgiving to you.
Julie B. says
We’re hosting the nuclear family plus a couple of friends. Usually others bring the lion’s share of the feast but this year I’m doing almost all of it. I’m still not quite sure how that happened!
We’ll eat mid-afternoon so that the patriarch can go have a second Thanksgiving with his significant other’s family. That usually leaves the evening for some quiet time for the two of us (three, counting the cat) once clean up is done. We may go out later to listen to music if there’s anything interesting going on.
Off to the grocery store (groan)….
Hope the two of you (and Lily) will have a very happy Thanksgiving, Kevin.
Cat says

I love Thanksgiving! Our son, who now lives away from home and is gainfully (yay!) employed, will be home for his first “break” since starting his new job. We will host my mother-in-law, the best mother-in-law on the planet, and my husband and I will share the cooking. I’m making my mother’s pumpkin pie by a squash pie recipe, my favorite, and ambrosia, which is a traditional salad for “my” family. We’ll have all the standards and then share with friends and family the rest of the weekend.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and Will- relax and enjoy!

Hey Kevin. I feel compelled to share our traditional Thanksgiving because it is very special, and my favorite holiday. Every Thanksgiving my family travels north to be with my parents at the “Lake” where my father grew up. My dad has a great little workshop he cleans up and sets up the wreath tables and roping machine. We buy bundles of fresh balsam fir, white pine and cedar which is fresh cut from the forests nearby. For us, Thanksgiving isn’t about the meal, although we have a wonderful one. It’s about hours in the workshop with the snow falling, the wood stove roaring, and the sharp tang of the greens. The dogs come in with their noses all snowy and curl up by the fire. We have a tiny ancient radio tuned to the holiday station and we all work together making wreaths and roping for ourselves and many many friends. My father just celebrated his 88 th birthday, and my Mom struggles with arthritis and heart issues, but this is the one holiday that everyone seems to enjoy so much, just working together and celebrating the blessing of the north woods.
Happy Holiday!

Woo Hoo! Oh and did I mention all the champagne you can drink!

I’m single handedly preparing an entirely GLUTEN FREE Thanksgiving Dinner for 16 people. This is no mean feat since I’ve only been Gluten Free 1 yr and have had to locate a GF Turkey, learn how to make a really really good GF pie crusts (2 pies for dinner), as well as really really good GF biscuits. Also learned how to make my own bread from a special ancient grain flour I get from Maninis out of Seattle, WA and have made all the GF bread for the bread stuffing (which everyone likes better than cornbread stuffing). This has been quite an endeavor and has taken a lot of coordination and planning ahead. But I think it will all go fine. Did lots of test GF rolls and pie crusts before settling on the recipes I will be using. Also, needed to learn how to make a really good gluten free turkey gravy as well. I’ll feel better after eating all the GF food I’ve prepared and so will all my guests. All this not bad for someone way over the hill at 71 years
Just love love your blog and plan on making your pumpkin pie recipe to go into my gluten free pie crust. I’m making a pecan pie as well. Your blog always contains a lot of love and care which shows in the projects you endeavor.

LOVE this site! We are hosting 13 people (perhaps 14 as I’ve invited my Mom’s next door neighbor whom is alone) and doing the whole works, including one deep fried turkey, one stuffed and roasted, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, ambrosia salad, mashed potatoes, rolls, fresh cranberry sauce, hmmm, I may be forgetting something. Of course pumpkin pie as well as fruit pies for desert! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Fawn Carriker says
For the past three years we have had Thanksgiving dinner at my daughter’s house, and I have been the “advisor” as she learned to roast turkey, etc. I moved in with her family this past week, and will now be the “resident advisor”! My son and his girlfriend will be coming up from Venice Beach to join us, and we will probably have a few young-adult “orphans” who don’t have family nearby, also. I really like the looks of your cranberry-orange bar recipe, so I will be giving it a try. We will serve traditional turkey and stuffing, salad, pie, etc., and several chocolate things.
Happy Thanksgiving…and thank you for your wonderful blog!

I am turning control of this holiday over to my children with fingers crossed. I have always hosted it. It feels strange not to be doing anything for the day except show up. I’m trying to be graceful about it. I might have to buy a small turkey and cook it for myself.

I will be hosting my family for Thanksgiving Dinner! Following dinner Gramma (me) and the grandkids make a new Christmas decoration-this is a tradition for our family. The kids are always excited to see just what I’ve come up with each year. This year we will make an ornament of the Holy family. We make enough for the kids to take extra home to give as gifts! This tradition makes the kids’ first Christmas away from home special because they have all the ornaments we as a family made-so even if we are apart we are together;) Praise God from whom all Blessings flow-I have soooo much to be thankful for:) Happy Thanksgiving!

I live in a small studio apartment in Boston but I still get to host Thanksgiving
because we have it on Friday, which gives us an extra day to prepare and the family
drives on a day with very little traffic on the road. My mother lives in a big house in
Connecticut and my mother, my niece, and I have a tradition that started when she was five.
We make everything that can be made in advance on , Tuesday evening, Wednesday, and
Thursday morning. We then drop off my young niece (champion sous-chef and cookie
cutter) and my mom stays over and we get up early to put the bird in the oven by 8 am so the
day goes easy. (Clean-up takes a week but it’s worth it).

This year we decided to tone it down a bit. Instead of rushing around trying to visit all the family and friends, we are going to stay home and enjoy a quiet dinner with just the four of us. We will have a smoked turkey, but for the two of us who are vegetarian, we will have a Celebration Roast. Lots of vegetable sides and for dessert pumpkin and pecan pies. Then it is off for a long walk with our corgis. Should be a wonderful day. Happy Thanksgiving to all, but let us be thankful every day for our many blessings, not just one day each year.
Donna S says
Doing what we always do, which at first read may seem dull but it’s quite the contrary. Thanksgiving is my favorite family day of all time. First, because I believe gratitude is number one, and second, . . . I really like and love the family that sits at my table every single year and every tradition we’ve created on our way here . . . all six of us. As each of my four children have grown a year older, they’ve eagerly joined the cooking rituals in the way they can. At 20, 13, 8 and 5, they each show up in the kitchen eager for their assignments. As the Thanksgiving Day parade plays on the TV we move into the kitchen, just for this morning, they learn, we laugh and all love.
Keila says
Happy Thanksgiving Kevin! We will be traveling to my mamaw’s for Thanksgiving. We love going to spend time with her and the rest of my family. Sheila L says
Typically we spend Thanksgiving day at my brother’s house surrounded by family; and over the years as the kids have grown up & had children of their own, the family feast has gotten extremely large (usually 35-40 people) and a bit chaotic. So this year my husband, 12 yr old son & I are going to have a small Thanksgiving dinner at home, then we’re heading out of town, away from the busy “Black Friday” hussle & bussle, to enjoy a “back to nature” camping trip. With all the demands from work, school & life, this will be a perfect chance for us to reconnect without everyday distractions (no cell phones, no electronics or video games) and remind ourselves what we’re really thankful for: each other!
David says
I’m going to a friend’ with my ribs dish her kids requested. They liked the ribs I made the first time from a recipe online. I was delighted. Hopefully I will do myself proud again this time.

My youngest son (at the age of 38) and I will probably spend the holiday here at home. My oldest son’s daughter that is currently working at home wants to spend Thanksgiving at home with her mom cooking dinner. My middle son and his wife are in California. My sister is probably going to her daughters. I am trying to figure out a date when I can get some of my family together. Sometimes this presents a lot of problems due varying work schedules. I am thinking my youngest son and I should go down to the Chester center and volunteer to help serve dinner to those others who may not be as fortunate as some of the rest of us. Whatever happens I do know I have a lot to be thankful for. I am wishing all of you a “Happy Thanksgiving”.
Chris Alderson says

My family gets together on Wednesday evening and makes pies and do some of the pre-Thanksgiving cooking. On Thanksgiving Day, almost all of my immediate family meets at my sister’s house (which is in town). We go around the table/room and each of us says what we are thankful for and then we have a big turkey and ham dinner with all of the “fixings”. We then spend the rest of the day together with family and play games and just enjoy the fact that we are all still together (my dad is 87 years old). Happy Thanksgiving!

My husband and I will be joining our dear friends on Lake Ruby, in DeLand, Florida, just like we’ve been for the last seven years. We always turn on the recording of Alice’s Restaurant with Arlo Guthrie telling his Thanksgiving story as we put the finishing touches on dinner. After the feast, we always sit by the fire and bring out the guitars and have a sing-a-long. This is always an incredibly satisfying day!
Aubrey says
Since we live far from our families, we are hosting friends who are also not traveling this holiday. We are excited to have our own ‘local family’ group and are preparing all of the fixings! We are making everything from cheese boards, to turkey/stuffing/cauliflower-mashed potatoes and finishing off with frozen pumpkin mousse pie!

I am hosting a small family gathering which I always volunteer to do so that our house has the leftovers. It’s not just the traditional meal that I love, but all of those yummy leftover recipes that follow.
And I concur w/ Heather, no black Fri. shopping for me. Working in a hospital, I’ve done my share of holiday shifts and know that some jobs have to be 24/7/365. But I’m not going to contribute to the craziness of making low-wage workers leave their families on Thanksgiving to stock shelves. Christmas shopping can wait. Save Thanksgiving Day!!

My husband and I will travel over 6 hours to South GA to join his family at his grandfather’s house, who has decreed that Thanksgiving will be at his house until he’s gone. In preparation for our 5 day trip, we’re booking caretakers for our animals–chickens, goat, horse, guineas, wrapping up errands–collecting my ’79 Volvo wagon from the shop where it was declared dead a week ago :(, harvesting roosters (6) so the caretakers aren’t attacked when they come to feed! And baking–I claimed dessert so that I wouldn’t be fighting for oven space on the holiday–2 pound cakes, 2-3 vinegar pies, triple batch of my favorite cookies, double batch of brownies. And rum balls if I still have the energy and the ingredients! Hope you and yours enjoy a fabulous Thanksgiving!

It’s just my husband and I now because the kids live too far away but I will still cook a turkey (because I love leftover turkey sandwiches), bake a pumpkin pie, and have cranberry sauce but on a smaller scale. We use to make lasagna too but now that is way too much food for us. By the way, I loved you winter sowing post and hope to do this after we move in the near future. I’ll be reading your blog all the time now that I can actually put in a garden.

For us in warm Arizona (high 70s) we could almost have a turkey barbecue (but we won’t)
We will have poached salmon with a lemon-caper sauce, paired with a Pinot Gris; herb rubbed turkey and roasted veggies, paired with a Châteauneuf-du-Pape; Spinach Waldorf salad. Later when things have settled down a bit, we will serve Kevin’s orange Cognac glazed donuts served with raspberries and Sauternes.
Kevin I am grateful for all you do, you have spread much happiness and shared much knowledge.
Following is too good not to share, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
A Gardener’s Thanksgiving
Let us give thanks for a bounty of people:
For children who are our second planting, and though they grow like weeds and the wind too soon blows them away, may they forgive us our cultivation and fondly remember where their roots are;
For generous friends with hearts and smiles as bright as their blossoms;
For feisty friends as tart as apples;
For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us that we’ve had them;
For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;
For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and as elegant as a row of corn, and the other, plain as potatoes and as good for you;
For funny friends, who are as silly as Brussels Sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem Artichokes, and serious friends, as complex as cauliflowers and as intricate as onions;
For friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as dill, as endless as zucchini, and who, like parsnips, can be counted on to see you through the winter;
For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening-time, and young friends coming on as fast as radishes;
For loving friends, who wind around us like tendrils and hold us, despite our blights, wilts and witherings;
And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past that have been harvested, and who fed us in their times that we might have life thereafter;
For all these we give thanks.
Reverend Max Coots 1928-2009

My husband, is smoking a turkey and making his grandmother’s recipe for coconut pies. He will make gravy with the drippings and I will make the stuffing, add the cranberry sauce to the table along with the green peas. He also make a corn souffle that is our 23 yr. old daughter’s favorite. We also will have a sweet potato each. Usually we have a house full or go to a house full of family and we will miss everyone this year, but didn’t want our son (26), who has to work until 2:00 today at Harris-Teeter, to be alone for Thanksgiving. My Mom (85) is going to feed the cats and help with the gravy and other things as needed. My husband and I had an easy breakfast alone this morning while everyone else slept and I am now drinking some Jasmine Dragon Pearls Green Tea before heading outside to plant a few last daffodil bulbs.
