Who hoo, here I go trying to win your first give away and it looks like I'm the first to post. Does that count for a bonus chance? LOL The hardest part is choosing a plant I love, there are so many. I'll say scented geraniums, pelargoniums. When I lived in Texas I had a little collection. But they're almost impossible to find here. My mom got me one last year, sadly, it died. I also want to try that chocolate plant!

I'm a brand-new gardener with a brand-new (86 year old ๐ house! So there are a lot of things I'd like. Top of the list is a dark-pink hydrangea. My grandma has one outside her bedroom window and it's lovely.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
J – welcome to A Garden for the House! I love pink hydrangeas, too, including the new 'Invincibelle Spirit.'
Gardenlady says
Well, this is right on time for bulbs. I'd like to get more irises, including the gorgeous, scented, reblooming ones you wrote about, Kevin. I'm already a subscriber to the newsletter.
Brigid O'Brien says
Hi Kevin! I love daffodils and hydrangeas. Those are my two favorite flower types. There is nothing like a daffodil on a spring day, bright yellow under a crisp blue sky….ahhhh. Hydrangeas are just gorgeous in any shape or form. I have pinky winky, endless summer, oak leaf and a few others. I can't get enough. I want to fill my yard with hydrangeas so I don't have to mow lawn anymore.
I already subscribe to your newsletter and I've got my cousin's husband, Peter, down in Westchester hooked on it and subscribing also. He has gorgeous gardens.
Love, Brigid O'Brien
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Brigid – daffodils and hydrangeas instead of lawn? That's music to my ears!

Hollyhocks are my fav…. The perfect cottage flower. So many beautiful color. I've been saving seeds for next year already, And I love to make danincg hollyhock dolls.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Erin – dancing hollyhock dolls…I'm curious!
Samantha says
Since autumn is my favorite time of year, I'd have to say chrysanthemums. I especially love the “football” flowered types. Cut and placed in a vase, they last and last.
erin says
You take a large bloom with the stem left on for the “skirt” and a small bud with a bit of color showing for her “head”. You peel back all the greenery from the bud and you'll notice small holes. You insert the stem from the larger bloom into the hole. The holes on the other side make it looks like she has eyes. You then float them in a shallow bowl of water and you have dancing hollyhock dolls! They are to cute and a great conversation piece. I just did a demo for the Col.Cty garden clubs and did this. They loved them. So different and simple…
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Erin – wow! Would love to see this. Send me a picture, if you can. [email protected]

mensa63 says
We moved from the city to semi-rural area and now have to share with multitudes of deer. The deer here are pretty urbanized as even in this rural area there are a lot of people. When we lived in town near the edge of the city several of my neighbors planted boxwood hedges and boy oh boy do the deer love them. Am happy to know deer don't like ferns much as one of my favorites are the maidenhead ferns but also like many of the flowers deer don't like but my first choice would be the Achillea Summerwine, it is so pretty. I love the old flowers I remember in my grandmother's garden, hollyhocks, french lilacs, lilies-of-the valley and rambling roses but you don't see them much anymore.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Ann, cdziuba, Dar, hmmmm1977 and mensa63 – Nice to “see” you!

Sydney – welcome. I love them, too, and the season of bulb-planting is nearly upon us!
GothamDan says
Definitely the iris. Deer don't eat them (I seem to write about deer in every post), and I can grow certain types down by my pond.
Elizabeth says
Roses, roses, & roses. Or is it herbs, herbs, & herbs? I already have somewhere over 10,000 daffodils, but there are never too many and quite a few died of repeat hard freezes once the greens were already well up. Delighted at a chance to win, And a subscription too! Thank you.
naturegirl says
I love to garden and it's difficult to pick a favorite flower since I love so many of them. But I will pick coneflowers, both the purple ones and the white ones. They have a long bloom period, the colors along with the cones are striking, they self seed and give me volunteer plants and I love to see the goldfinches come by and pick the dried seeds out of the cones.
I am going to subscribe now.
Deb says
My parents have a summer place close to White flower farm and we were there in June – beautiful nursery and they had the most amazing Dogwood tree in perfect bloom!! Breathtaking. Right now, I'm really into different coleus and I got two different varieties while I was there. I'm going to try to overwinter them and start cuttings for next spring.
I've subscribed to your newsletter and hope to win the gift certificate so I can go back and shop next year!!

to propagate boxwoods just as you suggested.
Thank you for all the great garden information.
Elizabeth says
Where to start? As my parents are both now gone, I find myself, with nostalgia, adding more and more to my garden with the plants from my childhood. Blaze roses, hollyhock, watermelon crape myrtle, wisteria, daisy, gardenia, pomegranite, cannas, pyracantha, fig, you get the idea. What would I like? Definitely old fashioned day lilies and bearded iris.
Already a subscriber. Thanks for the blog. I look forward to it!

I subscribed a few months ago–and I'm really glad I did! Planning to make the cupcakes with lavendar icing. I agree with others who have a tough time picking a favorite. Because they're in bloom now, I have to choose lilies. I have some 'Stargazers' blooming now, with “Merlot mix' Impatiens, green & white Caladiums and a HUGE elephant ear in the middle. Love going out in the evening when the air is fragrant with lily perfume!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Donna – I'm with you on lilies. The pink and white stargazers are choice.

Hi Kevin. I need to replace my dwarf Rhodie. I did a major landscape rehab but overwatered the new rhodie and sadly it died. Budget it tight so I'd LOVE to win the drawing to fill that empty spot that is crying for attention!
