I love the trees’ burst of splendor before sinking into rest and contemplation – and that as the leaves fall, I can see through things that were previously hidden under the busyness of their working leaves. The richness of nuts and berries, and the way the forest’s edge smells of wine. The drawing inward even as autumn’s beauty tempts us outward, and the way homes become nests. Everything about autumn fills me up.

I love the changes the season brings – from the fresher air and first frosts, to the incredible colours in the high Laurentians where I live, the early morning mists and of course the gardening chores that, for me, include a lot of transplanting of perennials who have outgrown their earlier digs. Why do I love Autumn? Let me count the ways! Having all those lucious root vegetables in the house. Making soups every Sunday and baking bread don Mondays. Picking apples and then spending the day making applesauce and apple crisp. Walking through fallen leaves that spread along the pavement like a Persian. Drawing tiny faces on acorns for my grandchildren. Drying herbs and then squirreling them away for winter cooking. The way Rudbeckia leaves smell as it goes to seed. (I call it “rabbit tobacco”!) The way bittersweet berries peel away to that wonderful orange, and then watching the birds feast on them and on the large crimson pips on the hedge rose. The scent of wood smoke on the air as we light the first fires of the season throughout the neighborhood. Shawls are brought out and put on chair backs, ovens are lit again, firewood is readied by the door, and a more forgiving sun shines through a golden screen of yellowing maple leaves, embracing each north-facing room with warmth. I love Autumn!
Shelagh says

Autumn is the last hurrah before winter. The skies show off their unbelievable blues and lamb’s wool clouds. Scents of cinnamon, spices, the earthiness of soil being put to its winter sleep, and burning leaves waft through the crisp air. And, finally, finally we spy chili and stew, pies and apple cider doughnuts, leisurely-roasted squash and onions and maple-glazed carrots on the groaning dining room table, saying, Come! Indulge! Savor!”

Hi Kevin
I moved to Portland, Maine last Feb 17th, 2016, I had been following your blog for the last 3 years. I fell in love with the East coast, based on your home and blog. I had wanted to move to France, but Maine, along the coast reminded me of Normandy, France (closer for my son). Here I have the French influance, but I don’t have to speak it. I love the 4 seasons, this winter will be my first full winter here. My home was a farm, built in 1900, not as nice as your’s, but its home and I love Maine. New life for me at 70, I am now planting my bulbs, over 150 I think, could use some help from Garden Design, looking forward to more of the Fall and the holidays to come. Thank you for your blog, it changed my life, Marian

Autumn on the Central California Coast actually brings our most summer-like weather. I love being able to sleep with the windows and slider open, nestled under cozy blankets. One of the only things I miss about living in Maine was the absolutely spectacular fall colors there — here in Utah it’s more muted, lots of shimmering golds but not so much brilliant red. Still pretty though. And I love being able to plan meals without having to worry about whether it’ll be too hot to want to use the oven.
I also love your giveaways. Even though the random number generator has never yet generated my number, your giveaways always embody for me the sense that hope springs eternal — maybe *this* is the time that my number will come up! 😉

When younger and living up north I would have answered the smell of burning leaves and the colors screaming at you from the trees. Now that I’m wiser/older and living in Florida, the wasteful burning smell is replaced by hot spiced pumpkin lattes and cool breezes announcing autumn’s arrival while walking my dog in the evening. Tall, roadside wild flowers begin blooming in bright purples and yellow providing the last sips of nectar for the few remaining butterflies. What is there NOT to like about autumn – oh yeah, the sandspurs.

Fall. Autumn. the very words make my heart soar! a time of tranquility and rest for all of my plant children after their long efforts at growing and blooming and producing seed. the comforting crazy quilt of leaves that insulate and decay to provide protection and nourishment for the next growing season. the restless fluttering of wings as birds and insects move through the intense blue sky heading for warmer climates in which to spend the colder months. the crispness after the wilting heat. the sense of snow and anticipation of another spring.

The thing I love most about the Fall, is the color. Glow-rious, color. When sunlight hits the reds and oranges, they just glow. It can be breathtaking! I love that the harvest starts slowing down, too, after being at such a hard pace, canning, freezing, making extra to give away as treats to friends and family. I love the berries that shine beautifully on trees and shrubs, giving the little birds something to feast on besides our handouts. I also enjoy baking more in the Fall, as the temperatures cool.

Autumn – the time of year my spirit comes alive! Breathing in cool fresh air, watching the sunset and the sunrise while awake enough to appreciate both, the pieces of straw found in the mouths of birds as they build their nests – taken from old scarecrows, the time of year so precious we scheduled our honeymoon around it, the rustle in the trees as they begin to become crisp before falling, having windows open and air conditioner off to hear the birds from inside – wonderful melodies and hearty crackles together in symphony, the waving of clothes on the line outside and the wonderful smell that stays with them, the baking and bread making and smells from the kitchen throughout the house, bringing out a whole new season of clothes from storage…gee, what isn’t it? It’s my favorite time of year and a few short months to enjoy – so off I go to start this Sunday with renewed vigor and wanting to be outside! I love Autumn – known also as Fall because it’s like falling in love with this earth we’re blessed to share and protect! ENJOY!

For us gardening is on going all the year, falkland winter are cooler. It is all lovely.
ElPico says
I love the poignance of the transition. The sensations of fall are of those of change. The rattle of wind in the autumn leaves is very different to the soft rustle of summer’s green leaves. There are apples and pears worth eating, with enough variety to ease the loss of stone fruits and berries. I can stop trying to avoid the heat and venture outside to the cider mill and the woods. The odors of freshly cut grass and backyard barbecue give way to the fragrance of dried leaves underfoot and cinnamon. As I say goodby to summer’s abundant display of life, there seems to be an instinctual preparation for the long sleep of winter. The most flamboyant show of the year is the leaves’ death scene, and the signal that the trees will be resting for a while and the garden will sleep under a blanket of snow. I look around me, and up to the incredibly blue sky and slanting sun, trying to capture the last intense sense of nature before heading home to tuck in.
Barbara Baldus says
I love the colors, crisp air, soup and wearing socks! Thanks for all your tips, Kevin.

My birthday and Halloween both fall in October, so naturally, Autumn/October is my FAVORITE time of the year! In Texas, while we don’t have the vibrant colors of cold regions, we enjoy our fair share of colors. The native maple leaves are beautiful; crape myrtles turn a gorgeous fall color before they drop their leaves. In October, we can plant our pansies, kale and snapdragons for winter blooms. After a brutal summer, we gleefully look forward to the first real cold front! Because we live fairly close to the Gulf, I am most thankful this year, that we have passed our peak hurricane season without any storms!
Fran says
I love this season. The rush of the summer is past and once the fall planting is done, weeds are pulled at a leisurely pace and you finally have time to spruce up all the flower beds in weather that does not require you sweating all the time. Quite pleasant. We have 7 raised beds, a multitude of flower beds and lots of grass that is finally slowing growing slower. God blesses all who care for His earth. Thanks for all your emails, recipes and your evident love of gardening and cooking. Be blessed!

Holy smoke! So many comments already!!
What I love about autumn, living on the southern tip of Vancouver Island (characterized by dry Garry oak meadows) is that the change into the new season is accompanied by the hilarious percussion of acorns falling on my neighbours’ decks, patios and cars (it really sounds amazing!) and the cr-r-rucks and exotic knocking rattles of ravens gleefully ‘talking’ to each other. Raven sounds reverberate thru the tall trees and conjures up ancient times when things were so much simpler.

I am a florist and I love designing with fall flowers. I think the grasses and millet are spectacular and add so much interest to an arrangement. This time of year I put a mini pumpkin or gourd as the focal flower. It is so much fun designing in a hollowed out pumpkin and the many colors of mums and asters make a fantastic filler. The only thing that makes me sad is I know winter is right around the corner and I have to live every fall day to the most!

Here in the Wyoming mountains, Fall starts with a gentle tease of a few frosty nights. Shortly thereafter, aspens, scruff oaks and maples burst into full yellow, orange and red, dramatically coloring the hills and canyons. But then, the most exciting part… the annual rut begins with aroused moose, elk and deer all grunting, huffing, moaning and ‘going at it’ right on the front lawn! After that show, it snows…

Going for a hike and seeing the beautiful orange and red leaves floating on, and reflected in, streams and lakes; the deep blue sky; the smell of burning leaves (even though I’d rather mulch them for my garden!) and warm apple pie and scented candles; the warm of an old, comfy sweatshirt on a cool crisp day; looking forward to celebrating with family and friends the abundant harvest the Lord has blessed us with…

Here at the Jersey Shore, I love summer, but I appreciate the gifts of each season. The buds on the Montauk daisies are a reminder that the hours of sunlight will continue to dwindle, and that I have to get out to enjoy them. I’m not a fan of chrysanthemums, so I look for other fall flowers and would appreciate suggestions. Thanks, Linda Scariano, for your reminder of millet; I use pumpkins and gourds in my window box and will add millet this year. Thanks to you, Kevin, I am also harvesting annual seeds for winter sowing.

Fall is my favorite season. Im a novice gardener and learning a lot from you (THANK YOU!) I prefer the cool crisp air than the high humidity. It draws me outside where Im preparing for the seasons to come. Im bringing in the last of the produce from my fruit and vegetable gardens, Im trying to figure out what perennials worked and what didn’t. I want to learn how to save seeds and propagate new plants for next year. And then there’s the bon fires and a glass of wine at the end of the day…..priceless.

I love fall so much that I wrote a poem/song about it:
“I’d love to be where it’s fall year round
But two months a year is the best I’ve found
So I take time out to enjoy it all
Cause nothing lifts my spirits like the feel of fall.
I sit on my fence and I breathe in the air
It’s fresh and it’s crisp so I linger there
And gaze up at trees where the sunbeams dance
And leaves tumble down in an avalanche
I walk through the leaves and they crunch below
And soon in their place will be drifts of snow
Til then I’ll delight in the weeks
And revel in the autumn leaves of gold and red.”
Autumn is simply magical for me and it lifts my spirits beyond description!

Besides the usual fall things mentioned (pumpkins, leaf color changes, asters, cider…), I like fall as a time to reflect on successes and challenges of the growing season (spring and summer), and putting the gardens to rest for the winter. I too need the rest, especially after the weeks of drought we had in OH this summer. I see fall as a transition time and on a cool evening, sitting by the fire with a cup of tea, is bliss.

Apple Butter in the oven, Gingerbread Bars, Pumpkin ANYTHING, Scalloped Squash Apple Casserole. Mums tucked everywhere among the shrubs and many colored coleus, the cool weather to tidy the yard, plant bulbs, enjoy wine in the yard with family and friends, celebrate all the birthdays in the yard among the Moon flowers, caladiums and elephant ears that flourished through the summer. Hiking through fields of asters, goldenrod, coneflowers etc., and watching the Mississippi River roll by. Unfortunately, our area has been experiencing serious flooding from heavy rains the past month. Mudslides and gully washers have destroyed homes, businesses, campgrounds and highways. I am feeling incredibly grateful.

Fall is the end and the beginning. It is the end of the peaceful moments spent in my garden sanctuary among all the colors, shapes, smells and sounds of summer. It’s the beginning of the vibrant colors of fall as nature bids it’s last farewell. Fall always stirs memories of my past when the air is crisp and I would take long walks among the falling leaves and enjoy the smell of a bonfire.
Fern Lys Horvath says

What I love about autumn is the cooler temperatures and the rain (though we’re a little behind on this one this year).
I love to go out in the wee hours of the morning and the air is cool and mild, and the landscape a little misty. Such a welcome change after summer that is generally suffocating ! And I also love to plant bulbs.
Thank you for organising this giveaway and happy autumn to you.

Sad to bid “adieu” to summer but Kevin’s words on rooting scented geraniums – favorites – led to my finding a rose-scented geranium in a stunning garden, and the gardener let me have a cutting. I think it will grace the winter windowsill!

Karen Savino says
Autumn is not really my favorite time of year, although I do find it beautiful, the colors, mums, the crisp cool air, the smells, apples, pumpkins, scarecrows, halloween. I also feel a bit let down. My garden that I labored all summer to keep beautiful is dying, turning brown, not looking happy. I miss its robust beauty and know that I have a long wait to see it again. The leaves when they turn color are thrilling and lovely but then I am sad when they fall leaving behind a mess to clean up and naked trees to look at all winter. Fall is the opening act to dreaded winter. Personally I love spring! Maybe I should move??

Laura says
It’s not 11:59 yet on the West Coast… I love the last “hot spells” here in the PNW cuz you know they’re harmless. The days are so short that the heat can’t build up and it dispels quickly and the hot spell can’t last for months like it can in, say, June. There are also still plenty of green tomatoes that need any remaining warmth to ripen.
Linda D says
I love Autumn but it is too short up here in Fairbanks, Alaska. We go from green leaves on all the trees, to the next week yellow and golden, to all the falling leaves then our autumn is over!! To be able to walk out on the tundra and pick wild blueberries and cranberries with no mosquitoes biting. The smells of high bush cranberries is a sign that our summer is over and you better be getting ready for winter.
