I’ve watched them all and it’s hard to pick a favorite….each one was a unique experience with the very best actors of the day! You could say that I cut my movie teeth on Hitchcock! I remember being with my family on a trip to see my older brother down south (he was in the service) and my father pulled into this motel (we had been traveling for hours) and my mother literally screamed and refused to stay there because it looked too much like the one in Psycho….we ended up driving for another few hours (into the middle of the night) before we found another place to stay. I’ll never forget that for as long as I live! Psycho it is!

While I loved all Hitchcock movies, I would agree The Birds is the one that ‘got’ to me the most. Years ago I was teaching in Thompson, MB (Canada) – a northern community about 800 miles north of the 49th parallel. The night before I’d watched – once again – The Birds. The next afternoon as I left the school around 5pm, the sky just beginning to darken, I had to walk through the playground. No big deal – except that there were about a dozen huge ravens (we called them Thompson Turkeys) sitting scattered around outside the school door. They were absolutely still – and I had to walk through them to get to the parking lot! They didn’t move – and some of them were only about 7 or 8 feet away from me. It was surreal, and I must admit being more than slightly tense! Of course, nothing happened – but I felt as though I was on the verge of . . . something!!! LOL
Carol H. says
The Birds! And speaking of birds, I saw six wood ducks in the little pond outside my window, a wild turkey, and an immature red headed woodpecker (which is very rare here in Boulder, Colorado) two days ago. They weren’t the least bit scary. Kevin, I just love you and your website. You bring joy, fun, grace, and beauty to the world.
Connie says

I remember watching Psycho when I was in high school and being scared motionless. The same thing with The Birds. Hmmm …. a favorite Hitchcock movie? I am not a fan of scary movies but have seen three or four of his. I liked Birds because … well, because I like birds but not necessarily Hitcock’s birds! I disliked Vertigo because I have a dislike for high places so guess I have vertigo. Psycho reminds me of my college days because that’s where I first saw it belatedly. So think I’ll go with To Catch a Thief more because of the leading actors than anything else.
Got my fingers crossed for the electric kettle; otherwise I need to go buy one. Thanks for doing another give-away and for sharing both your gardening expertise and your recipes. Your mother raised a very generous and talented son.

Definitely The Birds! I was a child when that movie came out, so we watched it with my parents. My mom hates birds – something about the sound their wings make when they’re flapping – so she was squirming and making all kinds of faces and noises during the movie. I think it was the only time I watched a movie of that genre and laughed. Watching my mom get all skeevy was entertainment at its best. When the sequel came out, my sister invited the whole family over for dinner and a movie. We didn’t tell mom what it was, but she was soon squirming in her seat again. This time, she got up and went into another room and called her sister (do you know what my kids just did? can you believe they…) Now, at almost 80, she is finally able to laugh with us about it. But she still hates birds.
Linda P. Strangio says

I still get frightened when I watch The Birds . However, I did a Segway tour of historic Galveston,Texas a few years ago and on that tour they showed a house where Hitchcock would stay when visiting friends . He would sit on the large shaded second story porch and write .The porch on this house was right across the street from a house that Hitchcock supposedly modeled the Psycho house after ! It really did look like the Psycho house and had a notorious story attached to it’s history …..
So Psycho it is !

For me it’s a tie between Psycho and The Birds. The Robins gathered in huge numbers here just like they do every year before migrating. Reminded me of The Birds but I certainly don’t fear them. If you want the one that Scared me the most, that was The Birds. Mostly because, the year it came out, I had an unfortunate problem of looking Exactly like the little blond girl with hornrim glasses. Never have seen the end of it. For the most “Hitchcock fan fun”, had to be Lifeboat……love Talulah and figuring out where Hitch had hid himself was a stumper!
Susan L. Espersen says
The Birds!!! Yes, it is certainly getting to be ” A nice hot cup of tea!” season, and I love it! The whole garden is finished, other than the pokey Brussel Sprouts! AS soon as it stops raining, it is time to clear the old plants, roto till, add some lime and compost, and plant the grass and clover seed for the cover crop! Here’s hoping the clay isn’t as bad next year!!! Thanks for all of your suggestions, Kevin! When the garden is finished for the year, I will sit right down and have myself a nice cup of tea! Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂

Hi All,
I saw Rear Window as a kid, and I remember being totally shocked by the fact that the creepy guy was Perry Mason. My mom had to tell me about how actors played different parts, and Raymond Bur could be both characters. Even though that was a long while ago, I still think the creepy guy in RW is Perry Mason with his dark side coming to the fore!

Love the kettle. Never heard of an electric one until I started working for a British aerospace company. My British seconded team members started arriving at the airport clutching their electric kettles, having carried them on their laps all the way across the pond. They’d heard we didn’t have them here and the kettle was the one indispensable item they just couldn’t do without, whether they were assigned here for two months or two years.

Psycho is my favorite Hitchcock movie. Can’t quite get it out of my head when it is late at night and no one is home and it is time to take a shower. It is just a movie, it is just a movie, it is just a movie….I need a hot cup of herbal tea.
Judith says
Psycho is epic. That shower scene has influenced so many other films and television shows. And scared many a woman alone in a house off from having a shower! Barbara McDonough says
Because of a terrifying incident as a baby involving birds. Still to this day I am petrified of them. I will feed them in the bird feeders, enjoy them from a distance but if one came to close to me, it’s sheer bedlam. Therefore, Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” is the scariest.
Wanda says
I remember my mom telling me about Psycho when I was 9, she was 15 when it came out and she went to see it. When I turned 13 it came to the dollar drive in and my parents took me to see it. To watch all the other peoples reactions also made the movie just terrifying, I have to say to this day, over 35 years later, scares the tar out of me. Psycho is my all time fav.

Louise says
North by Northwest <3 Cary Grant
Linda Karosic says
I enjoyed all the Hitchcock movies but The Birds is the movie that has had the greatest lifelong impact! I think of it each year at this time when the birds are flying south for the winter and they swarm in the trees to rest! ooohhhhhh scary! When my four daughters were young teens I rented The Birds and told them this was one of the scariest movies I’d ever seen. As we all watched it, the girls, now in their 20’s, were laughing at how “hokie” and “fake” the special effects were. So much for thinking they’d have nightmares! They laughed at the movie and at me! Oh well! 🙂
Cindy Garrison says
Rear window. It has everything!

Maybe The Birds, although quite honestly, I am not sure I’ve ever seen a Hitchcock film from beginning to end. I do, however, drink a ton of hot tea and would make good use of this kettle!

North by Northwest —
Eva Saint Marie, “I’m a big girl.”

The Birds — just because Bodega Bay is fun to say….and the movie is eeeek!
I’ve never seen Psycho and I don’t know if I ever will. It just sounds too scary!!!
Sharon Sarzotti says
My favorite is The Birds. I particularly enjoyed it as it was filmed in Bodega Bay so I know the area quite well being from Calistoga, going to Santa Rosa JC and loving the coast-line areas west of there. Thank you for offering this Kettle Giveaway. Hope I win because my tea drinkers from Australia who visit have to use a tea kettle on the stove, not so good because the lid got broken so it doesn’t whisle!! Microwave use is inot the same for tea drinkers!!
Deb Cawley says
Psycho! It’s definitely getting to be tea drinking time!
Diana Zee says
North by Northwest is my favorite. I just watched the film called Hitchcock in which they showed how they filmed Psycho and his relationship with Vera Miles. His wife was the genius behind him.
I was thinking of going out and buying the Hamilton Beach tea kettle but it would be even better to win one.
You have influenced me very much Kevin. I just bought a Flowtron leaf shredder and now I can’t wait to rake my leaves.

I was a teenager on a date when I saw PSYCHO and it still scares me today. I will not take a shower in a bathroom that has a shower curtain unless my husband is in the house. I love the electronic kettle…what an ingenious idea!
Helen says
I love them all but I enjoyed Vertigo a lot.
annette says
PSYCHO freaked me out
Vicki says
THE BIRDS, definitely! I had nightmares for months! I haven’t gone to see a horror film since….
Deb Steiner says
The Birds. It is great fun for those who remember to see the analogy and for those who don’t to get the explanation. The explanation always leads into others stories that have created that same loss of control feeling with things as innocuous as the birds in the sky. It makes us giggle, laugh and ponder the what ifs in life:)
Lorrie Taylor says
I think I like Vertigo the best, since I am so afraid of heights! Second would be North By Northwest. You sure did get a lot of responses on this! My kettle is on it’s last days, a new one would be great! Thanks for the chance!
CindyP says
How can I NOT pick Rear Window. That scene where Grace Kelly pulls her nighty out of the little overnight purse and Jimmy Stewart almost swoons. Now THAT’S romance people! And when he blinds Raymond Burr with the camera flashes…..Great, Great Flick.
I wish I could watch it again for the first time.
JoyceB says
Rear Window – with the best actors – of course! Thank you.
Kim says
Kevin, love your site!! The Birds still gives me chills.
Cookbook Collector says
1) Favorite: My pick would be Rear Window because it’s not quite as creepy or shocking as so many others, more of a mystery than a thriller (I don’t enjoy thrillers).
2) Hot Pot: Although I’m a hard core coffee drinker and have ground my coffee beans since early ’70s, I enjoy hot tea during winter afternoons. Always thought a hot water pot would be a smart idea for the kitchen since watching Alton Brown rave over it years ago.
3) Cookbook: With all the fall distractions (getting garden bedded down for winter, fall decorating, etc) I still hope you are attacking that cookbook. The best way to tackle big projects, like a cookbook, would be the Swiss Cheese Method, taking one bite out of it at a time until it’s reduced to a skeleton and then tie up all the loose ends. So, keep taking one bite at a time.
Melissa Horton says
LOVE tea and Alfred Hithcock! I liked Vertigo, followed by The Birds and Rear Window.
