READER ERIN commented that her dog likes green beans; he even “sniffs them out” when he accompanies her to the vegetable garden. Turns out my own MilkBone-, Pupperoni- and BegginStrips-addicted beagle, Lily (above), likes green beans, too. And here are a few other garden goodies she gobbles with gusto:
Cucumbers, if they are peeled
Fresh Lima beans, boiled
Fresh Soybeans, raw
Kale, if sauteed in olive oil, garlic and vermouth
Blueberries, if lightly cloaked with heavy cream
Does your dog dream of fresh fruits and veggies too?

A bit of a gourmet you have! My Jack Russell Terrier has always like baby carrots which we give him a lot instead of the usual doggie treats. I don't feed him straight from the garden as I don't want to give him any ideas about helping himself!

Terry – well, I'll admit that Lily and I have similar tastes! (Honestly, although I've tried, she won't eat blueberries without that touch of cream!)
I will have to see if she likes baby carrots; beagles and Jack Russells are a lot alike, no?

Love the photo of your dog in bed. Is that really how she sleeps? So glad she's recovered from her bout with Lyme disease.
My dog (a terrier mix) LOVES granny smith apples. I'll try giving her a green bean and let you know if she likes it. Sounds pretty healthy.

Our mini poodle loves carrots and green beans as well! It makes her poop bright orange and green – a little odd!

Im glad Lily eats her veggies! Fenway, my french bulldog also loves tiny pieces of lettuce, cucs, carrots. A great healthy treat for the pups!

I'm so glad Lily is healthy and eating her veggies. I lost my Barrett last year-but he didn't care for fresh veggies (too much like me, I'm afraid!). My cats, don't eat them and my horse generally only gets carrots and apples as fresh treats. My rats, on the other hand, love fresh fruits and veggies. The surprise love is gooseberries, although their favorite, hands down is watermelon…unless perhaps there's some chicken around!

Lisa – Seems that carrots are very popular with poochies.
Erin – Glad your Fenway likes lettuce – Lily won't touch it.
Despina – that green bean/brown rice omelet sounds tempting!
Katreader – So sorry to hear about your Barrett. But what a fun menagerie you have! Are the gooseberries from your own garden?
Katreader says
No, I got the gooseberries from the farmer's market. I do have my own raspberries, blackberries, grapes and apples though. When I bought the place there were beautiful old cherry, pear and apple trees (1 of each) but a storm and disease brought them all down. Sigh.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Katreader – I've had the worse luck with apple trees. Out of 5 heirlooms planted here 6 years ago, only one remains: 'Lady.'

My jackapoo, Lana Lang, loves green beans. She didn't go for kale though. I don't know what it is about the green beans.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Brigid – I don't know why dogs love green beans. Maybe it's the chlorophyll?
Marlene says
My dogs love carrots, bananas, apples, watermelon and lettuce. I'll have to try green beens with them soon.

Queen of the Click – I wonder if any other dogs like lettuce. Mine won't touch it, although she will lick creamy parmesan dressing from the leaves!
