Cookbook News

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | June 25, 2017 135 Comments

Pop the champagne, dear friends. This Monday, precisely at 9:00AM, my cookbook will be in the hands of the designer/printer/distributor. I don’t know if I will laugh, cry, or open a bottle of champagne that day. But I will certainly heave a BIG sigh of relief! Here’s why the book has been so long in the making:

Recipe Testing. Call me cray-cray, but I insisted on writing a cookbook that cooks would keep, cherish, and use. Consequently the recipes had to be tested over and over again, not just in my kitchen, but in the kitchens of other cooks, too. Recipe testing takes oodles of time, ingredients, and yes — mullah!

Editing. I hired a highly-respected editor to insure the recipes were clearly written. And even then, I found myself editing what the editor had edited. Time, baby. Time.

Photographs. My initial, low-resolution photographs could not be printed. So I made, staged, and re-shot every recipe again, this time with the correct camera settings, but beneath the incandescent glow of the kitchen light. Back to the drawing board! I finally made, staged, and photographed every dish yet again, this time in natural light. (Can you say “learning curve?”)

The book’s only remaining hold-up? The index! This crucial, back-of-the-book section will be accomplished by Elizabeth Parson after a proof — with page numbers — is available. Elizabeth’s client roster includes America’s Test Kitchen, so I know I’m in good hands.

And speaking of hands — I hope you’ll hold a copy of Kevin’s Kitchen: 100 Recipes for Delicious Living by late summer 2017. Stay tuned for future updates!

Big congrats on the book, Kevin! Can’t wait to see it! And thank you for taking the time to make it right. It’s just awful when authors don’t check and double check recipes, resulting in disappointment for so many eager to try their hand at making something wonderful. Your book will be wonderful in every way, I’m sure of it!

Congratulations Kevin! That’s awesome! Also, shucks, darn, and great big, fuzzy rats! I’ve been slowly paring down my 100ish cookbook collection (I gave up counting at 86). Those are just the ones I have in print. We won’t even discuss the e-cookbooks I have. I know, I have a problem. A bit of an addiction. Anyway, now I have to add one. Oh well, I will just have to suck it up and make room because I’m certainly going to have a copy of this one in my kitchen.

Kevin that’s wonderful. I remember about two years ago coming across your website, and it was more through the gardening than the cooking. Once l started poking around and realized you cooked as well then l started checking out your recipes and made several of them. l kept on thinking why is this man not putting out a cookbook!
Cooking and gardening are my two joys in life with occasional drinking mingled in.
Congratulations l am so looking forward to purchasing it. Thank you for taking so much time and putting in all the effort into doing this for us.

Can’t wait Kevin! I used to collect cookbooks but can’t anymore as we have to move again. We have a little farm and I have an organic garden and have worked at making the yard nice for 11 years. My husband had a massive stroke and we live a long way from a good hospital so will have to sell next year and move back to the Flathead Valley where three of our children live. I raise canaries and right now have a litter of Old English Sheepdogs but all the horses are gone, I sold all of the peacocks except one as the grandkids are fascinated by them.
I’m helping my husband walk again but his right side was badly affected and his communication area of the brain made him unable to talk but we are working hard and hoping he will be able to talk again.
So a wonderful Life can sometimes take an unexpected turn and one just has to make lemonade with the lemons you’ve been served and soon it seems with all the tragedies in our family I will be receiving my “Masters degree at making Lemonade”. You’re the only blog I read and I look forward to Sundays and can’t wait to buy your cookbook. Thanks Kevin for sharing your Life and your recipes. They are a bright spot in my Life.

Congratulations Kevin. I have made two of your recipes- the flower from scallions vinegar and the vegetable torte ( I think it was zucchini and summer squash) thingy. Obviously, you can tell that I am a very sophisticated cook. – not. However, I want to say that my favourite thing I enjoy about reading your recipes has more to do with your quips to use certain types of kitchen equipment.
Such as- “take a blue spatula”, “use a large green bowl”….. You get the idea. The work you must have gone through to put this book together must have been exhausting! Just like the work you have put into your garden and home. I hope you receive lots of accolades, bouquets and champagne for your efforts. Sincerely, Jess

Nothing has value without effort! And, just think of all you’ve learned from the cookbook process. Your entertainment style and way with food reminds me of the wonderful cookbook author Lee Bailey (1926-2003). All his books projected effortless entertaining, but as anyone knows that’s like Dolly Parton always said it takes a lot of money and effort to look good. ha! I’m the commenter that several years ago encouraged you to tackle the cookbook like “Swiss cheese”, i.e., take a bite at a time and soon the huge project will be consumed. By the way, I have over 50 of your recipes digitally saved and have cooked and enjoyed many of them even though sometimes I had to substitute the color of the bowl or spatula. ha! Great news! Congratulations! I can’t wait for a copy for myself and for my son and daughter/son-in-law who each cook for a hobby. My son is a professional chef (degree via Culinary Institute in Hyde Park) who has seen, admired and made some of your recipes here at home. I know the kids will all love a copy, and I’m eager to have so many of your wonderful recipes all in one place!

Kevin, I’m ordering your new cookbook even though I have been cleaning out my cookbook collection. I put a family cookbook together which is ok. I lost interest for awhile because it was so daunting & I had way too many recipes. Nonetheless my 3 sons & their families appreciated my effort & refer to it often. Congratulations!

I haven’t minded waiting for it though because I knew you would be very picky about the contents and every recipe would be perfect. Can’t rush perfection baby. Anyway I’ll be purchasing at least two.
