I HAD LUNCH LAST SATURDAY with one of my favorite writers — Ruth Reichl. Ruth is the former editor of Gourmet Magazine, the former restaurant critic for The New York Times, and the author of 3 best-selling memoirs. I have 2 signed copies of her brilliantly-woven first memoir, Tender At The Bone, to give away. Would you like to win one?
To qualify for this giveaway, simply follow these 2 steps:
1. Post a comment below, mentioning your favorite dessert. Mention also at least the first part of your email address, so I can easily verify that you’ve subscribed to my email newsletter (see step 2).
2. Subscribe — if you haven’t already — to my email newsletter. It only takes a moment to subscribe, and this newsletter is completely SPAM-free.
Not required, but appreciated: Click the Facebook “Like” button below.
This drawing expires Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 11:59 PM EST.
I’ll use random.org to select 2 winners. And again — in order to win — you must post below and subscribe to my newsletter. That’s not too much to ask, is it? After all, I receive no income for writing A Garden for the House (dot) com. I do, however, receive tremendous satisfaction from seeing the site grow!

Favorite dessert huh? Toss up between creme brulee (pretty much any “flavor”!) and toll house pie…. would just depend on the day and the mood….. What's yours Kevin?

I've enjoyed Ruth Reichl for years and years. Still miss her Times restaurant reviews. I'm already a subscriber (gregoryg) to your newsletter, which, by the way, is terrific.

What's yours???
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Erin – I'm going to drop that FB requirement. There are probably lots of readers who don't have accounts.
Both you and Brenda asked about my favorite dessert. It doesn't have a name, but I'll describe it: Place one scoop of vanilla ice cream in a dessert goblet, sprinkle with a tiny amount of instant coffee granules, then pour around the ice cream a small quantity of bourbon. Very simple. Very delicious.
Erin says
YUMMMMM.

I subscribe and like you on FB.
Favorite desert is lemon merangue pie with buttermilk pie running a close seperate, come to think of it put anything sweet between or into well made pie crust and it is for me. I admit I still make my pie crusts with unsalted butter, and half and half lard and solid shortening with half and half all putpose and cake flour. Hang the calories.

Kevin Lee Jacobs says
mensa63 – you've just described the best pie crust in the world. I make it the same way. That pillsbury “ready made” stuff is truly ghastly.

Oh, that's a hard choice. They are all home-made. My cheesecake and my husband's Bananas Foster are incredible. From my childhood, my mom's best friend would make me her Coconut Cream Pie every year for my birthday; I've never tasted a rival to that. A new favorite is the basil ice cream I started making last year. Thanks Kevin for all your wonderful ideas and beautiful photos. You write as if you were just talking to good friends, not an audience; I really look forward to your newsletter! Subscriber: BarbR7

I used to make sherry trifle with Bird's Irish custard. Irish soda bread too. Trying to think what is my favorite dessert though. I think the Dutch Desserts in Kinderhook. Anything from her. I also like the homemade banana cream pie from Valkin. My email address is [email protected]. I don't know what Bananas Foster or Buttermilk Pie are but I want both and I want them soon.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
BarbR7 – Thank you for your kind words. Haven't thought about Bananas Foster for years…will have to make it this winter. I love any dessert which receives a flaming finale!
Brigid – With you on Dutch Desserts…

Pumpkin pie has got to be one of my favorites, so I have devised a way I can have it through out the year without worrying about all the fat from pie crust, or the egg yolks in the filling. I make my favorite pumpkin pie recipe (the one I grew up with-my mom's, of course) but I use no liquid; only egg whites (2 for each egg called for); I reduce the sugar by using stevia and agave syrup-sweetening to taste; and I put the filling into a casserole dish for baking without any crust on the bottom. What I get tastes exactly like fabulous (fat-free) pumpkin pie, VERY low in calories, and I can eat to my heart's content … except for when it runs out, and then it's back to the store for more canned pumpkin!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
LittleEagle – That's my kind of dream, too!
Robin Cogburn – What a great idea…pumpkin pie without the guilt.
Katreader says
OK, I've finally decided my favorite dessert…well desserts. My mom's fresh strawberry pie tops the list. You must use freshly picked strawberries-so the pie is only made for that short harvest time. Another favorite, that you can have anytime, is chocolate mousse. And then there's bourbon pecan pie, chocolate chip cookies…
Renee says
I'm a big chocolate dessert fan, but right now I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving when I can usually talk my mom into making a carrot cake, from scratch, complete with homemade cream cheese icing. Yum!

Gianna and I both LOVE creme brulee…it's hard to top that. I had dinner at the Inn at Saratoga and they had a wonderful trio of creme brulee, so you had the opportunity for three different, unique tastes. I also love simple coconut custard pie, just tried to make it recently and it was delicious. I made a sour cream pear pie today, for the first time. It was decadent, but I did use low fat sour cream–delicious! PS. I am so jealous–lunch with Ruth Reichl! Wow!

A good quality ice cream tops my list. New York style cheesecake, apple crisp, and chocolate truffles sometimes edge out the ice cream.
