Anniversary Giveaway: The Winner!

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | March 21, 2013 16 Comments

Last updated on March 22nd, 2013

I’D LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE who entered my latest giveaway, wherein I asked you to mention the most complicated or time-consuming dessert you’ve ever made. Would you believe that I read all 778 responses? And that I drooled, laughed and clutched my pearls all the while? Here’s the winning comment, as selected by the little number gadget over at Random (dot) org:

Jan Evancho, comment #201: The most complicated dessert I ever made was an exploding volcano cake for my son’s 7th birthday. It had many tiers, shaped into a mountain, oreo cookie and graham cracker crumbles, and boulders, red jello lava, steaming pools of koolaid at the bottom and of course, a dry ice concoction streaming from the top. The kids (and even their parents) went CRAZY. The recipe itself was easy, but the design and assembly took a long time.

Congratulations, Jan — a brand new, 7-cup Cuisinart Food Processor is coming your way. Please check your inbox for an email from me!

Congratulations, Jan Evancho! Until I read your comment, I had forgotten all about the volcano cake I made for my daughter when she was, I think, 8. I did not think of using dry ice (brilliant idea!), but I did stick a whole bunch of long skinny sparkler candles at varying heights out of the top of the cake, which provided a very satisfying “exploding volcano” effect when all of the candles were lit! (Especially as these were the trick candles that relight when you blow them out!…) Enjoy your Cuisinart!

Wow, what a way to wake up to bright, sunny spring morning! I’m doing that happy dance, for sure! Ironically, my food processor (a cheap yard sale find) just went kaput and I was bargaining with my sis to send me our mom’s 20 year-old Cuisinart. No need for that now! The synchronicity of this event is purely magical! Thank you, Kevin!
