It’s magical the way the sun (or sometimes lack of sun) changes the colors, makes them glow or pop…..sometimes it takes my breath away! I love baking! Living in Texas it’s hard to turn on the oven in the kitchen when the AC is running because it’s hotter than a cat on a tin roof outside! So in the Autumn I love baking! Bread, cookies, brownies, pies, cake! I also love making soup & stew & chili, the things that warm up the house with heat from the stove and steam from the pot! Hoodies, boots & sweaters, which in Texas is a layering thing because it might start out 50 but go up to 80 in a few hours! I just love it all!

When we were kids our parents took us to the cider mill. We watched the apples being crushed & then we would have hot cider & donuts. Sometime ago I met someone from where I grew up, & they said that the cider mill was still going, just as it had when were kids. For me the old cider mill & jumping into huge piles of freshly raked leaves was autumn!

We were eating home made chili-baked potato and then apple crisp!!!
    The moon was the show.
    Perfect Moment is our lives.

Autumn brings cooler temps so baking season can really get started. Pumpkin and apples in everything. The smell of cinnamon and nutmeg fills the kitchen. It is time to make some hearty ( pumpernickel and others) breads to go with soups and stews. We can heat up the kitchen again with your recipes. Keep them coming as always. Happy Fall. When Fall comes to Eastern Virginia, my adopted home, I am transported back to Indiana, where I began my earthly journey. My parents were were campers and Fall was their season. Every weekend was an adventure into Brown County where long walks in the woods provided an education into nature. What I love about Fall is the nostalgia it brings to my senses. The scents, the sounds, the sights, the love my parents showed me in those quiet and breathtaking moments. I put an autumn gold maple in my yard despite its discomfort in a hostile climate. Even if it’s only for a week each year, my Hoosier home is here.

Yes, we certainly have trees that turn brilliant yellows and golds here but I miss the reds and mahogany colors of the maples and oaks. I relive the memories of raking huge piles of leaves and diving into them or hiding in them and jumping out to scare those walking pass our home. And I miss the smell of the burning leaves and later in the season I miss the smell of decaying wet leaves as I walked thru the woods.

Here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, autumn is flame-colored maples amid the evergreens, chai lattes, sweaters and fleece everything, pumpkin-spice binges at Trader Joe’s, huge harvest moons, and the return of galoshes and umbrellas. My daughter and I made a Pumpkin Chai Spice cake with Maple Browned Butter frosting yesterday, and it is like everything autumnal in one delicious bite!

I love the earthy, musky smells of Autumn. There’s a crispness and the air itself has a smell. I can’t describe it but my nose knows! Here in the Adirondacks, the colors of the trees burst into flames! I was born in late autumn, so it’s my season. Harvest golden days of natures bounty. Now can I have the green mixer? I want to give it to an amazing gal, Enid, for all her efforts with our local community garden. Thanks!

Autumn is a magical season. It begins for me when “the honey wind blows”. There is a certain indefinable quality to the wind and I think “honey wind” is about as close as I can get to describing it. If you search “The Honey Wind Blows” by Glenn Yarbrough (1964) on the internet or in a music department you will find the song with Glenn singing, along with wonderful whistling. It is a classic folk song. That song best describes what I love about autumn. Check it out—you won’t be sorry!

I try to look away in September when I see pumpkins, cornstalks, and apple dessert recipes, as, with the arrival of the official autumn equinox I am still in High Summer mode, enjoying the very best weather the seashore offers all the year. I savor those glorious golden days when the Salvias, Dahlias, ornamental grasses, hardy chrysanthemums are running riot in the garden.
But, when the endless, blue and white, breezy early Autumn days give way to more and more blustery, rainy days, I reluctantly give in to the inevitable. I start the homemakers semi annual rite of passage. I wash my curtains and windows, swap out my fall kitchen tablecloth, put up my fall front door wreath, and buy some yellow florist chrysanthemums for my front steps. I allow myself to consider projects and tasks neglected and pushed aside over those outdoor months.
Today, I am braising short ribs for a Ragu supper. As the delicious, savory aroma wafts thru our little house in Bristol, RI, I am thinking,….”Hmm, the oven is already on,…..how about that apple dessert!!!

Here in the south, autumn seems to sneak up on me. Our temps are still in the 90s while neighbors up north are enjoying much more ‘seasonal’ weather. When the first morning finally dawns cool and crisp, it is something to truly be savored. We just celebrated that day last week!

I get so happy when I see that very first crop of pumpkins arrive and it signals the time of year to both “nest” and connect with our community and friends!! We traditionally host two big fall events, an
Open House on Halloween that attracts over 300 people sometimes from all around the area and then Friendsgiving.
It’s so wonderful to meet new neighbors and the unexpectedly delightful friend of a friend at our big “Framily” Turkey Feast. I guess fall is much more about inclusiveness than leaves and pumpkins, but that signals the start of it all.

    Autumn.
To choose what I like most about this time of year would be impossible. Would it be the leaves dancing off the branches or beautiful sunsets over the fire colored trees in New England?
Perhaps watching as Canadian geese fly in formation toward warmer grounds and the winter birds visiting the feeders a little more often.
Fruit trees hanging low with their bounty and sunflowers giving up their last cheerful smile. The smell of cinnamon and apples baking in a pie, warm soup simmering on the stove and wood burning in the fireplace.
Muddy dog paw prints across the kitchen floor and hot chocolate kisses from the grandchildren.

Ah Kevin, it brings out the poet in me and I cannot choose without lingering on every simple pleasure and beauty that a autumn day delivers.

I love sitting on a blanket under my dream tree (Amur Maple)with the leaves blazed in rich colors of burgundy, oranges and yellows while my grandkids talk about their dreams. Granted with the 4 year old, it’s all about the next tractor I should buy him, but some times we have a mini picnic there, even tho it’s by our road. And the dogs join us for a lazy snooze and with hopes of getting the bites the grands don’t want. That didn’t happen this year bc as soon as the tree was alive with brilliant color, we lost the leaves to hard winds and cold temps the following day. I was lucky enough to get a picture of the tree branches as I laid down to take the photo.

No more crawling on the ground in spring removing cold, soggy, slimey leaves! So – bagging leaves to put on top of newly planted bulbs etc.

Thank you for your humor, self-deprecation, inspired recipes, insights into gardening, and so much more. However, I think “Columbus Day” as an appellation has lost its luster; in fact, I believe this day has been renamed to Indigenous People’s Day. But this smacks of political correctness, a philosophy of which I’m not really fond. So can we find a new designation? Best Political Experiment Day? Day of Sharing and Mutual Appreciation? Most Delicious Day? I leave it to you to come up with something creative and fitting.

Finding the perfect pumpkin to bring home and bake into a lovely pie, or something else. Sweaters are brought out to wear on the brisk evenings and mornings. Perhaps I will mow my yard one last time before I put the mower away for winter. I’ll mulch the present leaves. I’m getting more duck eggs than chicken eggs. I will change the girls feed. It finally rained so I spent hours looking for morel mushrooms. Nothing. Sadness. I’ll keep looking on the next warm day. Meat loaf , mash potatoes, green beans and corn bread today.

Autumn air has a crispness that comforts me, reminding me of the excitement I felt as a child. When the air turned cold and the heat was turned on for the first time, I knew Halloween was not far away. The skies would darken earlier each evening and all things became a bit more mysterious. I knew my grandfather would start building fires in the fireplace, quilts would come out of the closet, and pumpkins would appear on doorsteps. Even though the leaves would have to be raked, I would be entranced at their journey to the ground and enjoy watching them tumble and dance in the wind. The heat of the summer would slowly leave afternoon by afternoon until it finally gave way to the blessed peacefulness of snow and the wonder of Christmas.

Here’s what I love about fall in St. Paul, MN.
Smells: chili simmering, wood fire smoke in the air, damp earth from al the rain, pumpkin bars baking
Sights: sun shining through the colored leaves, kids in those thin worthless knit gloves, pumpkin patches, gourds and ornamental corn at the farmer’s markets, bright blue skies above the red and gold maples, the breath taking beauty of the Mississippi River valley, last of the garden produce being gathered
Sounds: the rustling of dried leaves still clinging to the trees, cheers and sounds from the band playing at the U of M football stadium, my granddaughters running into the house yelling, Happy Fall Gramma!
