When Fall comes to Eastern Virginia, my adopted home, I am transported back to Indiana, where I began my earthly journey. My parents were were campers and Fall was their season. Every weekend was an adventure into Brown County where long walks in the woods provided an education into nature. What I love about Fall is the nostalgia it brings to my senses. The scents, the sounds, the sights, the love my parents showed me in those quiet and breathtaking moments. I put an autumn gold maple in my yard despite its discomfort in a hostile climate. Even if it’s only for a week each year, my Hoosier home is here.

Autumn is a magical season. It begins for me when “the honey wind blows”. There is a certain indefinable quality to the wind and I think “honey wind” is about as close as I can get to describing it. If you search “The Honey Wind Blows” by Glenn Yarbrough (1964) on the internet or in a music department you will find the song with Glenn singing, along with wonderful whistling. It is a classic folk song. That song best describes what I love about autumn. Check it out—you won’t be sorry!

Jean Sharac says
I try to look away in September when I see pumpkins, cornstalks, and apple dessert recipes, as, with the arrival of the official autumn equinox I am still in High Summer mode, enjoying the very best weather the seashore offers all the year. I savor those glorious golden days when the Salvias, Dahlias, ornamental grasses, hardy chrysanthemums are running riot in the garden.
But, when the endless, blue and white, breezy early Autumn days give way to more and more blustery, rainy days, I reluctantly give in to the inevitable. I start the homemakers semi annual rite of passage. I wash my curtains and windows, swap out my fall kitchen tablecloth, put up my fall front door wreath, and buy some yellow florist chrysanthemums for my front steps. I allow myself to consider projects and tasks neglected and pushed aside over those outdoor months.
Today, I am braising short ribs for a Ragu supper. As the delicious, savory aroma wafts thru our little house in Bristol, RI, I am thinking,….”Hmm, the oven is already on,…..how about that apple dessert!!!

I love sitting on a blanket under my dream tree (Amur Maple)with the leaves blazed in rich colors of burgundy, oranges and yellows while my grandkids talk about their dreams. Granted with the 4 year old, it’s all about the next tractor I should buy him, but some times we have a mini picnic there, even tho it’s by our road. And the dogs join us for a lazy snooze and with hopes of getting the bites the grands don’t want. That didn’t happen this year bc as soon as the tree was alive with brilliant color, we lost the leaves to hard winds and cold temps the following day. I was lucky enough to get a picture of the tree branches as I laid down to take the photo.

Kevin–I very much like you and have recommended you and your expertise to friends and family. Thank you for your humor, self-deprecation, inspired recipes, insights into gardening, and so much more. However, I think “Columbus Day” as an appellation has lost its luster; in fact, I believe this day has been renamed to Indigenous People’s Day. But this smacks of political correctness, a philosophy of which I’m not really fond. So can we find a new designation? Best Political Experiment Day? Day of Sharing and Mutual Appreciation? Most Delicious Day? I leave it to you to come up with something creative and fitting.

Autumn air has a crispness that comforts me, reminding me of the excitement I felt as a child. When the air turned cold and the heat was turned on for the first time, I knew Halloween was not far away. The skies would darken earlier each evening and all things became a bit more mysterious. I knew my grandfather would start building fires in the fireplace, quilts would come out of the closet, and pumpkins would appear on doorsteps. Even though the leaves would have to be raked, I would be entranced at their journey to the ground and enjoy watching them tumble and dance in the wind. The heat of the summer would slowly leave afternoon by afternoon until it finally gave way to the blessed peacefulness of snow and the wonder of Christmas.
Andrea says
My favorite thing about this time of the year is that all the plants are at their absolute biggest–the grasses and wildflowers on the roadsides are their most colorful and rich and many of the plants in my garden are producing seeds that birds eat.
