After our dinner we turn on the Christmas lights that my 18 year old son puts on the house (his Christmas present to me) then we head off to the movies. We will be with our children and grandchildren at our daughterβs home for a wonderful day of traditional fixings that have been handed down in our family from my Mother, along with our own can’t do without additions. Probably the most unusual dish for someone outside the deep south is adding rice to the dressing recipe as my Mother did. Anytime I mention putting rice in the dressing people say they have never heard of that. Your should try it, it makes the dressing much lighter but takes nothing away from the flavor.

I am preparing my usual feast for my family, which is turkey, ham, turducken, green bean casserole, potato salad, dressing, gravy, salad, cranberry-orange sauce, sweet potato pie and coconut cake. I will probably bake angel biscuits or yeast rolls as well. The day after Thanksgiving I make that turkey-rice casserole that my grandmother used to make. It freezes well and is a wonderful way to use up the leftover turkey. The day after that I will make turkey and dumplings or turkey pot pie.
I love this time of year. We will decorate for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.
Cindy B. says

Our family always gathers at home for Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone brings something to contribute and I make the turkey and traditional creamed onions; there’s a lot of tradition involved, but we aren’t afraid to make some variations on a theme as well. Once we all went out to eat for Thanksgiving at a local Inn; while the food was good and there wasnt’ any clean-up or work involved, it just wasnt’ the same and we never did it again.
Thanks for a great web site.

my family is doing the same as every year. those who deer hunt disappear from the house at daylight or the night before and congregate at the cabin – which is a quarter mile from the house, lol. the hunters do their thing and my sister and i watch our mom cook random dishes and chat around the table. mom refuses to let us help much. any child not hunting watches cartoons or rides the four-wheeler around my house and the barn – only safe places during deer season – wearing their orange, of course.
first meal is at noon. 2nd about 3, last about 5. whomever shows up, eats.
my mom is getting one of these for christmas if i don’t win. she already asked. lol

My daughter and her boyfriend are coming for dinner and bringing their two dogs. My name is “Scrambles” to them! Kind of like grandma:). But, it may be the closest I will get to my daughter producing a warm body to care for. She also has 4 cats, w birds and 6 chickens! She is vegetarian and I am very cool with a vegetarian dinner for Thanksgiving. But, her boy friend and my fiancΓ© are both meat eaters, so we’ll have a turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, stuffed celery with cream cheese. Mashed potatoes and gravy and the dessert will be produces by me and will be something my fiancΓ© wants, because the rest of us do not eat desserts, per se. Then, we will be off for a long country walk with our dogs and my 8 year old Yellow Lab leading the way, because she is the leader of the pack.
A Cuisinart would be a welcome touch to our kitchen! I make smoothies in an old blender and we feed our Lab fresh pumpkin twice a day. I love to process it in our mini-processor, but a large one would make all the difference in the world. Thank You if I do win!
Heidi says

Ever the incurable traditionalist I’ll be in the kitchen roasting a turkey with Southern Cornbread-Pecan dressing. I’ll serve a Texan tradition my grandmother always included: 1 whole steamed cauliflower in a sparkling crystal bowl, crowned with and resting over a puddle of Chili Con Queso to be ladeled over individual portions. Cranberry Pecan Marmalade Chutney, home made of course. Mashed potatoes with fresh chives or garlic, as the Spirit moves me, with oodles of natural gravy. Green Bean Casserole, Peas w/pearl onions, Ginger glazed Baby Carrots. And never try skipping the Tamales at a Texas holiday feast. Though we live in Missouri now we always go home “in our hearts” for the holidays. And by request baked sweet potatoes in the skins, w/full cream Amish butter, salt and white pepper.
Karen says
Thank you for your generosity. I’m going to be by myself this Thanksgiving (my choice) so cooking will be pretty simple.

Since we moved back from Costa Rica to be close to family, we’re definitely the hosts for Thanksgiving dinner. Around 15 of us, very traditional meal, and the good news is we already “flip-flopped” the living and dining room (living room is much bigger, so this way we can open the table up all the way and fit everyone) so that we don’t have to do that particular chore on T-day. Woo-hoo. Figure we’ll enjoy the change all the way through the holidays and also put a couple of months between the change and the change-back! Love the website, as always!

Roberta Kolberg says
Our family tradition has always been to spend the holiday together. Recent years have found us living long distances from each other. So now we all travel about half the distance and meet at Williamsburg, VA to spend the holiday preparing our holiday meal together and the long week end enjoying our time together. We do the whole traditional meal, stuffed turkey, whipped white potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, two vegs, biscuits, stuffed mushrooms, etc. AND of course three or four different kinds of pie. That is no small feat, given the “rented” kitchen spaces we have to work with, bringing everything we might need to use. There is joy and happiness for those of us together and sadness and missing those parts of our family who have passed and cannot be with us. It truly is a time for thansgiving and family.

I plan to do nothing! Thanksgiving’s best to you, Kevin!
βWhat I like doing best is Nothing.”
“How do you do Nothing,” asked Pooh after he had wondered for a long time.
“Well, it’s when people call out at you just as you’re going off to do it, ‘What are you going to do, Christopher Robin?’ and you say, ‘Oh, Nothing,’ and then you go and do it.
It means just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”

This Thanksgiving will be at my house with a few changes to our family tradition of me planning and preparing the entire meal.First, I’m trying a new take on my traditional brined turkey by adding a fig glaze to the finish 30 minutes before the bird comes out of the oven. Second, I’ve assigned all of the 11 family members to prepare a portion of the meal, with my doing the turkey and stuffing. Hope this change is as much fun and unstressful as me prepping everything in the past.
Whatever, the outcome, one thing remains the sameβspending a delightful day with all of my family!

Spending time with family and friends at our son-in-law’s sister’s “gentleman’s ranch” in FL. Grandchildren love the chickens, horses and other four legged animals. We did this trip last year and fell in love with the idea. We had so many wonderful people join in that we had to set up tables in the yard. BEST Thanksgiving ever. We stay at a B&B nearby so we have a place to hide when things get too hectic for us old folk.
As for #95 Ms Eddie: Start doing the physical therapy prior to your surgery to strengthen the muscles. My 82 yr husband’s bone-on-bone knee replaced and less than one wk he was swinging a golf club. First few days he wondered what he was thinking when he agreed to have the surgery…but that passed and your pain will too.
#128 Earleen, I wish you all the best with your surgery…too bad it is day before Thanksgiving, hope they have a well staffed crew over those following days.
#176 Shannon, I am sorry you have invited inconsiderate guests who display actions of “waiting for a better offer”…it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to accept or regret an invite. They need to give thanks for having someone like you in their lives that they perhaps don’t deserve.
Cookbook Collector says
Husband and I are doing a TG day trip, driving 170 miles (2 1/2 hours) to be with his siblings, cousins, and their families (25+ people) and then returning (another 170 miles) before dusk to hopefully avoid hitting a deer on the road during rutting season. Just like many families in our country, our host provides turkey, potatoes, gravy and everyone else brings all the coordinated side dishes & desserts to make a wonderful feast. If I win, I want to give the food processor to one of my family members.

Staying home with my two dogs. I put a tablecloth on the floor in front of the fire and set it with plates (mine has silverware)..the dogs know about this ritual and are on the best behavior you can imagine. I cook a turkey and some side dishes for me and put it on a huge platter in the middle of the cloth. Each dog has their place and waits until I slice it and even though they’re voracious eaters outside of this ritual they sit very still and wait until I say it’s OK to eat off the plate. You should see them eating so delicately!!! It’s the best Thanksgiving ever. lol.

Not sure what I will be doing on Thursday, but sometime over the holiday weekend I will have my daughters and their families for dinner. Since my life is the most flexible, they always find out what their partners’ families, who have many more people to consider, are planning, then we decide which day they will celebrate with me. I don’t mind, because it’s not the exact day that’s important, but just having a special time with them all. I will cook the turkey and make the mashed potatoes and gravy and probably a couple of pumpkin pies. Then for the first time, I am asking the others to bring the accompanying side dishes. (I hope they’ll come through!) I will also invite one of my good woman friends who is alone to join us and then my housemate will also be here. This little ranch house will be packed and the three-under-three grandsons will be sure to keep chaos reigning! It will be great and I will be glad when they all leave, too!

I’m hosting Thanksgiving this year. I’m thankful all three of my grown children will be coming to the island. One will be put on wood splitting and hauling the wood to the house, while the other two help prepare all the usual dishes: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, roasted squash with garlic, onion and red peppers, marinated beets, Brussel sprouts and green salad. All the veggies are grown on Vashon Island, except perhaps the red peppers. We have friends coming with whom we have shared Thanksgiving for 30 years. I think this is my favorite holiday. I love the comment about the butt lift and tummy tuck-lol as they say.
Paula-I love the steak and crab dinner tradition. Seems simple and maybe at the original Thanksgiving they had some crab and steak. Didn’t they say seafood venison and fowl were on their menu.
We usually bring a dessert. But I’d like to think out of the box this year. Pumpkin is traditional but over done-at least where we have Thanksgiving-I guess that’s tradition too.
Don’t you have to bring a pumpkin pie to add to the pumpkin pie table, I mean dessert table? There’s usually several pumpkin pies, homemade, store bought, the kind with cream cheese. . . . sometimes there maybe a pudding or chocolate cake or sugar cookies but even checking what desserts will be there, someone always brings a surprise pumpkin pie besides the side dish.
Anyway:
We visit the grandparents, eat till we exploded, play cards and on the way back home stop and visit at our aunts house for a “second” helping of dessert, board games and just hanging out.
Casey Cavasher says
Hope to have a quiet, relaxing, peaceful Thanksgiving Day with just the 2 of us — my husband is on call and there always seems to be at least one crisis call every holiday so am hoping things will be quiet and safe for everyone this year. It looks like it will be just me and my old cat this year, but no worries… I’ve never been a big meat eater, so turkey and ham are a drag to me. I have always loved the side dishes best! I’ll hole up in my kitchen and make buttermilk biscuits and cornbread from scratch so I can make Cornbread Dressing… and I’ll play around with fresh veggies to create a vegetable masterpiece. I have so many nice options since my CSA farm share ends the week of Thanksgiving… still many goodies to enjoy.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone, and a super Thank You to Kevin, for keeping us all inspired and motivated… for giving us a place to connect with “Our Tribe.” Love and Oms!

Hosting my immediate family + my mother, my in-laws and a family friend= 8 at our table. I generally grill a small turkey or turkey breast, cornbread/sausage stuffing, mashed and or sweet potatoes, and roasted carrots or Brussels sprouts. Guests bring dessert and wine. We pretty much do the same every year, but 3 years ago it moved from my in-laws to my house as it got harder for them to do the cooking.

Well, Kevin, no T.T., ‘girls lift’ or B. L. scheduled, but I certainly am thinking that might be the way to go! What a present that would be! π Instead, my husband and I are flying back to Evansville, IN, driving to SO IL (yep, no trains or airports there or buses or cabs) for the family gatherings (his and mine) which average at least 45 people at each place. While cooking and cleaning up is exhausting the memories with our nieces, nephews and godchildren’s little ones are worth all the effort involved. AND I get to decorate my Mother’s home for Christmas! Usually a case of wine gets us through the 12 day visit!
(Yes, I really could use the Cuisinart Food Processor!)

I hate that so many folks on here are going to be alone as I will. I used to have an “orphans” T-day dinner for everyone around us that couldn’t afford to go home to family etc. (we lived in Alaska then so a lot of folks were stuck without family). This year, it’s me that’s stuck, so I’ll do what my mother would have wanted: bake a pumpkin pie and go serve/eat at a local soup kitchen. I hope I win because my food processor died and I can’t afford a new one.

Our family Thanksgiving is held every year at my house. It is my favorite holiday and I love us being together every year. The family is very small now as we have sadly lost the elder people, but I will still make the traditional meal, as always with one surprise. This year I saw a picture of a raw vegetable platter arranged to look like a turkey & it was gorgeous, I am planning to add that as an appetizer . It’s quite large, has to be arranged in an 18-inch round caterer’s platter. It looks like it’ll be great fun to make. Wishing all my fellow readers here a warm & wonderful Thanksgiving!

When my husband’s maternal grandmother passed away 3 years ago, her husband declared that Thanksgiving would be at his house every year until he dies. Luckily for me, my family is willing to work around this dictate. So every year we drive 7 hours south to the GA/FL line for Thanksgiving. I bake about 8 dozen cookies and a couple pies to take down with us. We arrive on Wednesday evening, and simply snack until the main meal on Thursday afternoon, then eat leftovers twice a day until we leave, usually on Saturday. Finally! after 18 months my parents are able to come visit me in my new home. I am so excited to see them! Last years visit was canceled due to Dad’s heart surgery and Mom and I ate dinner at Baptist Hospital in Memphis in between visits to ICU and then they had to wait until Mom had her knee replaced……. I will be cooking a traditional dinner with all the trimmings and can not wait to get started!! Hope you have a great holiday too π
Chip Barkel says
Quiet Thanksgiving at home for just the two of us. I do a big turkey and all the trimmings and creamed onions, as they remind me of my father. They were always served Thanksgiving and Christmas in his family. It’s a nice memory.

Sylvia Neal says
I’m excited about Thanksgiving, more than usual. I’m just ready to get together with family. We’re all going to my oldest son’s house, who has room for all. He deep fries turkeys for us and half the neighbors. Everyone brings a planned dish. I like to make dressing, so I bake a turkey to get that fresh juice required for good flavor. I will share my baked turkey meat, but will save some for turkey pot pies and turkey and rice soup. For the soup, I put the whole carcass in a big pot, boil it, and remove bones. I add onion and celery while boiling, then rice near the end. Gee, I’m hungry. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you will post pictures of your adorned table of goodies.

Alicia O'Neal says
Thanksgiving is always prepared at my home sweet home. I plan ahead and always try to make it the best holiday gathering event ever because, I enjoy the end result how my family and friends make such great comments about my decorating and my great tasty dishes. That alone is a great gift I can share to all and it simply makes me happy. I am preparing a hickory smoked turkey with Mexican stuffing in it to add extra flavor to my turkey. I just finished cleaning and puree my giant pumpkins for my thanksgiving side dishes. Pumpkin mashed instead of potatoes, homemade pumpkin pies, and I will use the turkey broth for my gravy. Asparagus for some of us that love it and fresh green beans. Miniature whole wheat rolls and cranberries with orange skin shredded for a tangy flavor relish. Our traditional homemade tamales pork and bean cheese with jalapenos . I will make a German raspberries and blueberries tart desert because my son-in-law doesn’t like pumpkin pie and cornbread for my dad. And last, I always add something new for my family and friends to try out. And my new dish this year is a Cinderella puree soup dish. I am calling it Cinderella soup because I use a Cinderella pumpkin. It becomes a bowl and then put in my puree vegetables and mini sausages and serve as a appetizer soup while guest awaits for the grand delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving is considered the number one holiday that people come together from all over the world to meet and get together for a special meal or simply reminisce about good old times and our present times. Happy Thanksgiving to all and the best of good health!
Dana Freeman says
Thrilled to announce that we are having dinner at home this year with our kids, and possibly some grandparents. We love to cook, and to make great meals so looking forward to it. BTW, made the Persian lime pie over the weekend, and it is FABULOUS!!

With recently becoming empty nesters I knew Thanksgiving would be tough for this mama. We’re driving to be with one of our kids and another is flying in to the same location. Sadly, one other can’t make it. It’s a new experience and I want to establish that we all need to be together! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I will be going to my sons and daughter in law’s home; visiting will also be my daughter, her husband, 2 dogs and my other son. I have a little pug so the dogs will stay at my house while we travel to my son’s home. (They just got a Samoyed puppy) We will cook, overeat, talk at once, take a nap, then travel to my home for relax, with 3 dogs, not at all. . . . HAPPY THANKSGIVING . . .

Diane (from Indiana) says
For Thanksgiving, I am cooking for the entire family, like my own mother did for so many years. I love having the entire family together, with grandkids running all over the house, and the chatter at the table! This year, I’m going to serve buffet style on my kitchen island. That way eating is not interrupted by continuously passing food around the table. You want more? Get up and get as much as you want, while everyone else is eating!
Rosie says
Having a quiet day at home with my husband.
Crystal Sperber says
This Thanksgiving my husband, daughter, and I will be at my parents house where I am glad to say they will take care of the whole meal! I may bring a pie. But traditionally since my daughter was born Thanksgiving has been at Grandparents house and Christmas at our house (to best accommodate Santa). I believe we are enjoying a traditional meal with a Smoked turkey, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, rolls, and pies!

Taking a nice hike with a few family members and then eating!!!

This Thanksgiving, my boyfriend and I will be having “lunch” at my parent’s and “dinner” at his mom’s. We’ve been doing this routine for a few years now. It’s so nice being able to see everyone on the same day, even if the driving is not-so-fun! I’m hoping next year, we’ll do Thanksgiving at our house and have everyone over.
Elizabeth Tiburcio says
I am heading to my in-laws for Thanksgiving. I’m trying to figure out something to make that will travel well on an airplane. Can’t show up empty handed! Darlene Shannon says
Thankful to have survived another year to see another Thanksgiving. Planning to cook Thursday and Friday so my children can enjoy dinners with their in-laws one day and my house the next. I am so very thankful to still physically do the holidays. Remember those who are no longer with us, the US Servicemen standing watch for our freedom, those may not have a holo day, and God, whom has blessed us so richly. God bless.
Gail says
For the first time, we will have two sets of children/grandchildren from both sides of the family over for Thanksgiving at our house. For the first time, I am SLOW COOKING a heritage turkey. For the first time, I am using a stainless steal roaster with holding tongs that my husband recently bought for me. I am using a meat thermometer, for the first time. For the first time, I am cooking sweet potatoes from the garden in my backyard. For the first time, I am soaking my cornmeal for 24 hours prior to baking into cornbread. For the first time, SOMEONE ELSE is bringing desert, and SOMEONE ELSE (my husband) is making the green bean casserole. For the first time, we are using the good china that my husband and I received as wedding gifts 3 1/2 years ago. This is my first Thanksgiving dinner cooking in my newly-renovated kitchen, thanks to my husband. Although most of my family has passed away, I truly have much to be thankful for, most especially, my loving husband.
