THE WINNER (as selected by Random.org) of my Back To School Giveaway is Linda, comment #353: “Cleaned my living room carpet, hosted a back to school dinner party for a bunch of faux-sophisticated 17 years old girls (friends of DD). Dinner included olive and feta bar, grilled salmon, homemade ravioli, tomato salad, profiteroles and flourless chocolate cupcakes with raspberries. No she did not help me cleanup…”
Congratulations Linda, you’ve won a brand-spanking-new 7-cup Cuisinart food processor! To collect your prize, just send me a note.
THIS WEEK, because the kids are back in school…because I’m hard at work on a cookbook and won’t be able to post as often as usual…and because I cherish each and every one of you…I’m giving away a food processor!
The food processor in question. It’s a sleek, 7-cup Cuisinart that slices, shreds, chops, and purees.
For a chance to win the Cuisinart,Β just answer the following question:Β What did you do over Labor Day Weekend?
Did you…
Attend too many parties? (Definitely.)
Cook something fabulous? (Yes indeed. Have a look.)
Receive a full-body waxing? (No. And ouch!)
Deep-clean the kitchen? (Next week, baby. Next week.)
However you spent the long weekend, talk to me in the comments section below, and I’ll enter you in the random drawing.
The Rules:
Post your comment in the comments field below (do not click on a picture and post your comment there — it won’t be counted).
Enter soon! This drawing ends at 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 .
Only one comment per person, please.
Not required, but appreciated: Click the “Like” button below!
As always, I’ll use the nifty number device at Random.org to select a winner. The winner’s name will be announced on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. So be sure to check back!
Please note: This giveaway is sponsored entirely by…me. I do not know Mr. Cuisinart, Mrs. Cuisinart, nor their adorable little boy, “Cuddles” Cuisinart.
Good luck everyone!

Well, I decided that the pull out pantry that came with our home when we bought it 11 years ago had to go. I grabbed the drill, hammer and crowbar and went to work. It was a hot evening and I was glowing a bit when I finished, but WOW…once the cabinets came out the space was exquisite…42″ of ” I can’t wait to organize you” waiting for me to put my touch on. Just the fact that I will have a clear view of everything in the pantry at one glance makes me giddy! I know it’s not what most folks would call a fun weekend, but for me…it was the beginning of an awesome well organized kitchen. Baby steps…but look out…now that I know I can deconstruct with the best of them I’m gonna be on a roll!

Went to a lovely farmers market and scored all kinds of goodies! Made Chile Rellenos with the awesome poblanos I found. Unfortunately had a mishap with the blackberries though! I went to make a cobbler ad had everything ready only to look down into the berry mixture to see tiny white worms! All was good though because I had also bought peaches. Love your tomato pie recipe, I have been making them for years with pie crusts and having to go through the trouble of getting a lot of the water out of the tomatoes so it would be soggy but doing it with the biscuits is perfect!
Kate says

I went to an apple festival in Hendersonville, N.C., with my daughter and sister. We had a ball. Afterwards, we ventured on up the road to Pisgah National Forest, where my daughter practiced her fly-fishing. Nothing was biting. A pro, who happened along the trail, told us that they don’t start biting until late evening. He was all decked out with more equipment than he will probably use in his lifetime. My sister and I sat on the bank, watching, as we are too old to maneuver amongst the rocks in the river. Besides, we don’t have a clue as to how to throw a line. A big fish frustrated all of us by flapping and making circles in the water, near the bank below us. My daughter tried repeatedly to catch it, placing her line with a little “hopper” right on top of it. She said, “mom, I can see the fish plain as day, moving it’s head back and forth, eyeballing a dragonfly.” “It’s just laughing at me.” We had a great time and it’s a beautiful place. I have some great pictures. You would love the wild flowers. Highway 64, runs from Brevard, N.C., through Hendersonville and apple country, to Lake Lure, where Dirty Dancing was filmed. Ya’ll come to see us.

I traveled four hours by car to spend the holiday weekend with my friends, a married couple who designed their own home (they are engineers) way high up in the mountains of WVA, where they work inside the Radio Quiet Zone.
We foraged for mushrooms, cooked Japanese one night, did yoga on the deck looking out over the valley, talked our heads off, ate Mexican the second night, then drove to a small local venue and set up the sound and stage for a local bluegrass ensemble and ran the show, then packed it all up and went home to the gorgeous house, four cats and a great cup of tea.
Friendship, sleeping in the mountains, talking cooking and cookbooks, song and music, entertaining and laughing.
I was so inspired (all over again) by the coolness ushering in the “cooking season” and then I came over here and noticed the giveaway… wow, wonder what wild culinary dishes I could make with something like THAT? Woooo…..!

Karaoke, swimming, eating and social visiting enjoyed by all. Neighbor helped me snap the green beans i had picked and we filled the cornhole bags (like bean bags but you use field corn, it is an OH thing) and sewed them shut as I didn’t have time to finish them before the party.
Barbara says
Is there anything better than a long weekend? OK, there are oodles of better things, but a long weekend is surely something to be savored and enjoyed. Among other things, hubby and i took long walks around the neighborhood – i love to see what’s going on in other people’s gardens. In one yard, there are miniature ponies! Regardless of what their names actually are, we call one Minnie and the other Cooper.

What did I do over Labor Day weekend? Well, first I got strep throat from my daughter, my son, and husband. Then I BROKE MY FOOD PROCESSOR trying to make hummus. So I’d love to get a new food processor!

hi kevin …I baked your cream scones …. yum!… high elevation calls for a hotter oven and reduced baking powder ….and I made clotted cream in the slow cooker, with “old style” (lightly pasteurized) heavy cream .. here is the recipe for home made clotted cream: put less than two inches of heavy cream into the slow cooker, and set to WARM… leave it alone undisturbed for about 12 hours, while a yellow crust forms….. after about 12 hours, switch off the slow cooker, and let the crock cool to room temperature … when the crock with the cream in it has cooled, the crock goes into the fridge for about 12 hours more, while the yellow crust solidifies, …. then you scrape off the crust, and put that into a jar… that is your home made clotted cream …. … the left over cream in the bottom of your crock is a bit like butter milk, and can be used for baking pancakes or whatever …

Our then six-week old great grandson, Logan Crockett, is a patient at Children’s hospital of Philadelphia. He is undergoing intense treatment for meningitis. This is his second hospitalization for it already. The doctors could not diagnose the condition during his first hospital stay. He is a sweet little guy, and he will be receiving treatment for 21 days. We got to stay for two days with him. His Mom & Dad are with him day and night.

Entertained my granddaughter and her husband alone, as my husband was teaching sailing in NYC. I made the chive pesto that was a super big hit. My daughter, her mom, likes bland. This is always a source of fun for us.

I spent the weekend at Brainerd International Racetrack, camping right next to a section of the track (yes, they were racing), helping to prep handmade shells and loading them into their mortars. Later Saturday evening, I along with my family, my fireworks family (MN Club and people from across the USA totaling 150) and about 500 public people watched a fireworks show of a lifetime, well really two years of time. All the shells were handmade by mostly people in MN and the USA. Six 8″ shells from Spain and four 10″ shells from Japan. All were multi-break shells. These were all special shells that most people never get to see at a public fireworks show. They take many weeks and sometimes months to make, since all are made from scratch, all the comps, stars and inserts made from scratch, each layer of brown paper, pasted and put on one layer at a time, etc. After the show, I along with about 20 other adults stood in a big circle and played with handmade sparklers, some burned red, some bluish white. A fun time for all, even tho a lot of the set-up was done when it was real sunny and a hot 90 degrees. Several couples cooked food for everyone all weekend, we had 3 large tents to shade us from the sun and rain, yes it did rain Saturday afternoon, luckily everything was done and covered with plastic. Not much sleep, but that’s a common thing at fireworks events when we’re camping.

I’m proud of myself for this. –There was so much Chard in the garden! I harvested most of it – I chopped up the leaves to pull into cooking as I need it.
I chopped the stems and made a delicious condensed Chard soup out of them which I then pressure canned for later.
Now what to do with the kale!??
Carmen says
Had about 12 people over for a bbq. Made several loaves of herb bread and served with a variety of cheese and my garden grown grape tomatoes doused in greek olive oil. I also made a ton of food, including rib eyed steaks, which was deeply appreciated. This I know since there were no left overs!

Let’s see…I can hardly remember that far back. Probably because I did nothing remarkable! I think I did things around the house and walked the dog and relaxed and then entertained my daughter and her 2 1/2-yr-old twins–not so relaxing! It was a low-key weekend which is what I like. And, yes, please choose me for that Cuisinart!

OH MY GOSH, I NEED this food processor dearly!!!!
Labor Day Weekend I:
1) Cleaned the house

3) Volunteered for the 3rd year in a row for the Event Staff at the Grand Prix of Baltimore! (my other love is cars besides cooking, lol!)

I spent my Labor Day weekend…..Laboring!!!!! I just returned from a 4 day trip to Los Angeles where my son is in graduate school at UCLA and had recently moved into a new apartment. We IKEAed it….shopped for furniture….rented a truck to haul a couch that was ‘gifted’ to him by a friend….it took us 40 minutes to drive across LA on the 105 (some ‘alleged’ road system that is full of traffic regardless of the time of day). Ironically, I returned home (I live in Asheville NC) to unpack and ‘get back to my life’. I received my first food processor 45 years ago as a wedding gift. It ‘broke’ right before my trip (I was going to make some fig scones to take with me on my trip…for him)….I ‘googled’ the food processor and it surfaced under ‘vintage’ small appliances. HA!!!! In any event, the figs are still in the frige…..the buckwheat flour still on my counter and I am putting off purchasing a new food processor….of course, the Cuisinart is the ‘Cadillac’ of processors…..but it is too steep for my teacher’s salary budget. I assure you it would be put to good use. I LOVE reading your website….am in the process of collecting empty milk jugs for my ‘winter’ garden……Mary

Saturday got up early, drove 2 hours to attend a high school reunion, visited a couple cemeteries while there, came home very late in the night. Sunday watered the gardens as I didn’t get to on Saturday. Monday, Labor Day, I had to work at the garden center and nursery, mostly watered everything. An exciting weekend, right?

We spent a beautiful day beside the pool with family and friends, soaking up some gorgeous sunshine! It has rained an enormous amount this year, so we were very thankful for the beautiful day. Sunday , it rained, but we still fired up the grill and made some yummy burgers with chiles and garlic. I also prepared some squash and zucchini to go along with the burgers, and we finished up with some awesome chocolate chip cookies. All-in-all, a day that is definitely worth repeating. π

Over Labor Day weekend we worked in the yard deadheading flower beds. Pulled weeds in our garden. Dug our beets up and sliced and cubed them and canned them. We got 17 quarts. We also found time to clean out the shed. Picked our raspberries and made a cobbler. It was so yummy. Then we went fishing. It was a very productive weekend.

Being an older couple & grandparents of 5 and GG.of twins,we have a hard time trying to get our family together all at one time. We now just let the cards fall where they may and get it while you can, so for the holiday my daughter offered to cook and bring a meal to us.
She called her brother and his family and they were all available to enjoy the day. What a beautiful relaxing one,and we so appreciated the offer. At least half of the family could enjoy.
If you pick this letter,I have 2 granddaughter that love to cook and are good at it.They are both in college,so this would increase their love of cooking.
Thanks Dolores

My youngest daughter and I drove out of state to visit with my only full brother and 2 half sisters whom I’ve not seen since last Christmas. We ate healthy food, sampled some blackberry wine and tried my sister’s homemade black raspberry jam – ALL were good. We helped my brother with getting his shrubs and trees trimmed; he travels a lot and has little time to do this. We enjoyed being together and the whole weekend that was much too short! That Cuisinart would have helped a lot since I do most of the cooking! Hope your new cookbook goes really well and will miss any communications with you Kevin while you work on it!

We were packing to move so the kids came to help pack. Since we are moving to a smaller home we needed to find a substitute for our traditional Thanksgiving gravlax appetizer which takes too much time and, more importantly, too much space in what will be a much smaller refrigerator. And the kids needed a real treat for all their hard work. So we experimented with two-one soy sauce/Asian/sesame based and the other from a Russian themed article Food & Wine). Both were great but we are tending toward the F&W gravlax for Thanksgiving.

I got up early and picked some rasberries to go with the granola and yogurt bkfst. Piddled around in the garden picking whatever was ready and deadheaded and weeded here and there and watched the sun come up over the Wasatch Mts here in Utah. Then I did my daily workout from Maxworkouts.com. followed by a protein shake with some rasberries thrown in. Then I got serious in the garden and moved some dirt and placed some rocks…40-50 lbers in the rock garden to make some more planting areas and retain the hillside. Gathered some seeds for winter seeding I learned about from you last winter. Spent another hour clearing weeds from the steam. By then neighbors were awake so I could go and give away some of the squash, zucchini and tomatoes…..not the rasberries. Relaxed in the hammock and read the paper. Went for an hour interval run. Sat in the stream to cool down and mentally noted what needed to be done in the garden next and where to place more rocks. Cleaned up and lay in the hammock some more while doing some prep for the college class on psych I am teaching. Helped a neighbor lady spread some bags of mulch. Met the new neighbors. Went to the mall with my wife but didn’t buy anything. Whew!! But I think she will go back for the shoes. Relaxed in the evening with some multi-tasking watching her movie choice while playing a few rounds of Call of Duty. I think I will go look up how to spell rasberries.

I hopped a flight to San Diego to visit my daughter & son-in-law. First stop a mex restaurant for breakfast then a relaxing day. Sunday visited with other family in Cherry Valley, CA. with a nice BBQ beef lunch. Monday was spent with a cooking class my son-in-law gave me on mole for lunch then it was off to the Del Mar Racetrack, so much fun people watching and betting on the ponies. BBQ that evening, lamb chops & a wonderful mushroom bread. Extended my trip so on Tues went shopping, and tried some Greek take out food, then Wed. it was a message and a seafood lunch/dinner and then off to the Airport to fly back home. A Great Break from my Gift Shop ( Star Junction) in Whitehall, MT. I truly took time off from laboring to enjoy the weekend. Now of course its back to work. I am a fanatic cook & love to try new foods & recipes. My passion is cooking/baking and I really should be in the food industry some how, but not sure where yet. Good eats to All.

After looking at the pictures of completed rooms in your beautiful home, I invited talented friends to Vermont far a grand work and play weekend. Handy folk installed heritage woodwork and installed sheetroch on stairs leading to the upper level of the garage. Gardeners cleaned beds and prepared them for the long winter. Children (with help) followed your suggestions to winter over petunias and geraniums for bright indoor windows when the the snow piles up outside. Cooks and non-cooks followed many of your recipes to create beautiful meals.
A fun and exciting time was had by all. Yes, we did have rain, but so what.
Keep your ideas coming. We plan a repeat next year.

I spent Labour day weekend quietly. I went to our farmers market for fresh produce. It is amazing how fast the summer has gone & sad to see the end of certain fruits & veggies in our area. The season seemed to short. Did some housework & read or played the piano as well as talking to my family on Monday. Hope I win the food processor. I have a small Cuisinart processor in combo with my blender but it is too small for a lot of things.

I spent the weekend in Victoria BC celebrating my daughters 14th birthday. We love Victoria for its European feel and youthful vibe. We spent the weekend taking in the sights, shopping of course, eating great food – some raw, some vegan, some meaty but all delicious, fresh and flavorful. Since I am gluten intolerant we skipped high tea at The Empress Hotel but spent several evenings strolling the wharf enjoying the vendors, street musicians and vintage wooden boats with the requisite gelato in hand. It was a great time to celebrate her, connect and prepare for the next adventure – high school! Despite what many say and despite the fact that I’m a single mom I am never quite ready to send her back to school. I think this made it a tad bit easier.
Mrs. Handyverger says

Tessa Stephens says
I was sick on Labor Day π I had gotten strep throat, but had to turn to natural remedies due to being in-between insurance at this time. My son and I did visit an immediate care center to see if they’ll give us a strep test anyway, but they would not without all the payments being made up front, which for the two of us it would have been around $250. So we went home and continued our natural remedies, which in the end worked just fine (as good as the antibiotics), just took a little longer to clear π

We spent Labor Day weekend (Friday afternoon until Tuesday morning) at our little cabin in the woods, enjoying the birds and having our annual Labor Day picnic. We ate indoors this year because here in Texas it was near 100 degrees and not that pleasant outdoors. Since I live in Florida now, labor day does not signal the end of summer and all the chores that go with it as up north. Summer just goes on and on and on like forever! So I didn’t do anything special. Just life as usual—relaxed and casual. No more kids to send back to school, no more vegetable gardens to harvest, no more pools to close up, no more leaves to rack before snow flies. Boy—life sure can get boring!!!!
Julie says
My DH and I visited the newly opened Pinnacle Bank Arena in the Historic Haymarket area (Lincoln, NE). That was after we pulled all the lovely tomatoes from our garden to save them from the critters attacking them (worms likely). Our cages were not adequate to hold the monster plants, and the fruits were starting to lay on the ground. We’re trying your paperbag method to ripen them. Brandywines, Cherokee Purples, and Lemon Boys. Pulled a bucket full of Black Cherry tomatoes too. (LOVE tomatoes!). Next year we’ll be doing something different to ‘cage’ them. π I do not own a Cuisinart… it is on my wish list… so would love to win. Thank you for the gracious offer of the giveaway… and thanks for your blog, too.

I had a surprise 70th birthday party for my husband. No one gave it away, and he was totally surprised when he walked in to what he thought was a party some friends were having, and 80 or so of his friends broke into a rousing, if slightly off-key rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Good food, numerous bottles of cab, merlot, pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonay, prosecco, champagne, and a gigantic birthday cake were consumed and a local performer sang Motown tunes. We danced, drank and ate until late in the night. Labor day we recovered:)
Lois W says
We were busy with our moving but I made a delicious zucchini lasagna. We have gardens and seem to always have an abundance of zucchini so I look for new ways to use them. Aren’t you suppose to labor on labor day? The last time I actually ‘labored’ on labor day was when I gave birth to my son, many years ago. Even though I’m retired and have 6 Saturdays and one Sunday every week, Labor Day is special. I like to do something I really need to do but with my large gardens, don’t take time to do. I worked on my scrapbook , hemmed up a square dance dress and worked on some sided for a movie I will be in, (which I needed to get started with). Had a blessed day.

Harvest weekend…Actually labored. But, before working in the garden, got some ribs set up to be slow cooked/smoked on the Q. Then headed into the garden. Labored is the right word: I shopped for (and bought) a new dehumidifier (because I burned out the other one by not cleaning the filter!!!); trimmed some of my herbs and freeze dried them; sweated a lot on Saturday (upper 90’s to 101-we survive without AC-using fans only); cleaned out 3 junky areas-filled 2 trashcans and 2 large bags for Salvation Army; Sunday after church wrapped birthday gifts (plus a little last minute shopping) then a large meal at my sister’s house to celebrate 1 August and 2 September birthdays; On Labor Day I was crabby and not really fit company so I cooked some ground turkey adding Knorr Beef stock and wonderful spices. I spent the weekend loving my three year old grand son and getting his love in return! He ate all the sweet pear tomatoes he could reach- which meant I had less to worry about picking; he used his plastic dump trucks to move the pea gravel around the paths that wind thru my yard- which meant I went ahead and got those extra bags of gravel I’d been talking about needing; and he and his grandfather blew so many bubbles on the front porch that we just had to get the hose out and give everything on it a much needed bath!

Snorkeling with panther sharks off La Jolla Beach in the cool Pacific waters under a grey, misty marine layer sky. Below me, in the shallow waters, swim 5 – 6 dark purple colored adult panther sharks. As soon as I touch the sandy ground with my feet, the sharks surround me, almost touching me. Panther sharks are harmless and do not attack humans. Their diet consists mainly of small fish and crustaceans. Panther sharks come to the La Jolla shores each summer to mate.

We didn’t do much as I am recovering from having my right carotid artery cleaned out on Aug. 22. I went off my low cholesterol diet for about 2 1/2 months – had an egg and bacon every day while on a 42 day cruise/vacation then didn’t get back on it. Well, I ended up having a mini stroke while having lunch – couldn’t move the fingers on my left hand for 15 minutes – so went to the ER. Luckily my doctor had heard a narrowing and I was on my way to get an ultrasound when it happened. I also wonder if the chlorine they use in desalinating the sea water on the cruise ships could have had something to do with it. They did some studies of young Korean and Viet Nam vets and all seemed to have a lot of plaque that they think was due to all the chlorine they used to sanitize their water. The surgeon said it was 98% closed, mainly with new soft plaque. Needless to say, no more fatty meat or eggs for me. We just got the hospital bill and I’ll will be interested to see what discount Cigna gets. I was expecting something around $10,000 before discounts but IT WAS OVER $43,000! I still don’t know what the surgeon and anesthesiologist will bill! Seems a little extreme since I was in the hospital only 2 nights – 1 in ICU.

Went out to the son and d-i-l’s home on the lake and sat on a hill watching my two daughters and my great-granddaughter play in the water and read a lovely mystery “family patterns”. Then we went for a glorious ride on the pantoon boat after dinner (I took 3 salads) around all the fingers of the lake and docked at our favorite ice cream place. By the time we arrived back at our own dock, it was nye on to dusk and time for the parade of boats, chinese lantern launches and a few fire works, that was Sunday evening and we rested from that on Monday. God bless and may the winner enjoy her prize! ONE OF MY SALADS IS CALLED SPRING SALAD! WHEN MY CHILDREN WE VERY YOUNG WE DIDN’T HAVE A LOT OF FRESH VEGGIES COMING FROM S AMERICA……………..OF IF WE DID I COULD AFFORD THEM WITH 6 MOUTHSTO FEED. SIMPLE GRATE CARROTT, CHOP CERERY AND GREEN PEPPER REAL SMALL OR FINE. ADD EITHER CHOPPED CHIVES OR CHOPPED ONION, S&p, A LITTLE GARLIC SALT, MIX WELL, WITH COTTAGE CHEESE AND CHILL FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR (My son’s aboslute favorite salad..)

We played board games one evening and had a bonfire on the beach another. Also prepped and froze a peck of miniature red haven peaches and a lug of blueberries for the winter. It’s nice to go up there to relax. π

My Mom was here in Vermont from Florida for a visit so we spent some quality time together. As simple as having coffee together on the deck in the morning with both of us still in our pj’s meant the world to me. We chatted a lot and worked on solving all of the problems of the world during our morning or afternoon coffee times. And of course we did some shopping and some sightseeing. I worked a little in the garden, and general household chores. I enjoyed taking care of Mom, no matter if cooking her meal and discussing our newly found healthy eating ideas or getting her a tub of warm water and Epsom salts to soak her feet. She worked so hard bringing up 4 children, she deserves the break while allowing us to take care of her. Just a lovely laid back time with Mom.

You dear man – how generous of you. I am so grateful to have found your website and enjoy sharing it with friends. I look forward to viewing your cookbook.
We were just getting back to being empty nesters after our son and daughter went back to college. It was Restaurant Week (actually longer than a week but that’s what it’s called) in the Dallas area so we had been out to dinner and then celebrated our anniversary. By the time Labor Day weekend got here we really just took it easy. I worked in the yard while my husband played golf and then we grilled halibut for dinner. Since it is still hot here it does not feel like the ‘end of summer’. Having grown up in the Northeast I still think of it as such. Summer is always a fun, laid back time and I mourn ‘the end’ of all the seasons, but it is bittersweet as it will soon be the start of fall which brings some of my favorites – the colors of the leaves, mums in my yard, a chill in the air, a fire in the fireplace, fall veggies, and pumpkins galore. Just a comfy, cozy season.
John Askildsen says
with the dank, cloudy weather, we opted to get a leg-up on fall cleaning. so we ‘deep cleaned’ the entire house, dusted every single book in our library, polished all of the furniture, power-washed the exterior clapboards, deck and porch, mowed lawns at home and at our catskill house, weeded and dead-headed the gardens, and finally, made a wonderful eggplant, chickpea and curry dish for supper ! other than that, we didn’t do too much. π

Ann Knott says
I took my 23 month and 5 month old grandsons on a 5 hour road trip to my sister’s house. The trip down wasn’t so bad, the trip back was a bit hectic, as the baby was fussy. While at my sister’s, the toddler got to eat an apple fresh from Auntie’s tree, feed her donkey, pet her chickens, see the stars in a very black sky, and waved hi to the deer in her back yard.
AnitaB says
Over Labor Day weekend, we stayed home and ‘dogsat’ two dogs for my son & his wife – and I did lots of genealogy research. Plus, I deadheaded my roses, and just plain enjoyed my rose-bed. So glad that our super speedy smooth-hair Border Collie has made weekly Liquid Fence application unnecessary!!

Man, you have a lot of devoted followers! I just have my two boys and three cats. Anyway, we marked the end of summer by tucking in to the cornichons that have been curing in the fridge since mid summer when they were harvested from the garden and pickled. Susan H kanarick says
I dehydrated beets! Did you know that a 5 gallon bucket of freshly picked beats, stems cut off at about 2″ long and roots still attached, washed the beets, steamed them to preserve the nice red color, then sliced on a mandolin and then put into the dehydrator, and taken from the dehydrator and put into a jar, will fill a 1/2 gallon jar just perfectly. That is what I was doing on Labor Day weekend.

Oh my, what a nice weekend spent with my best friend, my wife Dina.
We made our holiday weekend a mini staycation. We both work and manage a home for men with special needs. So we rarely get a whole weekend to get out of down. So we take day trips whenever possible.
On Saturday we visited and tour a local gem, The Cranbrook House and Gardens. What a beautiful tour. After we had dinner and walked around downtown Birmingham shopping and enjoying the evening.
Sunday, after service we packed a lunch, consisting of fresh picked (from our garden) sliced heirloom tomatoes, dressed with espresso vinegar, garlic, cilantro, onions and spiced olive oil garnished with feta and fresh mustard greens…yum. A fresh baguette, bottle of wine and fresh fruit salad with some other light snacks helped to fill the cooler and complete our nutritional needs for the day. We then headed north to one of our favorite beaches, under the Blue Water Bridge in Pt. Huron, and spent our day eating, sunning, reading, napping and snuggling as the freighters and other boating traffic traveled up and down the riverfront. A day with many things to be grateful for.
Monday was devoted to canning peppers and tomato sauce and salsa. What a wonderful weekend.
scott says
We went to the Finger Lakes and went wine tasting! So much fun!
Igor says
This was the most quiet Labor Day weekend ever. Kids at college. Buried both parents last year and they used to be the impetus for the entire family to gather. Work schedules keeping us close to home. Actually made the tomato pie from deliciously ripe tomatoes and basil from the garden. Also made a variation of the pie with zucchini, but it did not come out as well (probably because my daughter suggested we add cottage cheese to the mayo…it was a bit to soggy.
Kate says
Kevin we worked around the house. Had the neighbors with 2 month old twins over for dinner. It was a nice night out for them, no cooking, and someone to hold the babies!
Did the last of the school shopping for our 1st grader.
Wishing you the best as you work on your cookbook!

On Labor Day we had a family and friends picnic in our back yard as we have for the past 34 years. We have the family pool, so we are the “go to picnic spot”.
Also, while the “Henning” baked beans were baking, I made over 60 cupcakes and muffins for our borough Police Department. Our PD is the best in the world, all 24 of them.
I made a quick visit to the cemetery to place a few flowers from my yard on Pop and Mom’s grave and to say “Hello” to them. Wish they were here.
I hope everyone had a great day.
Cindy says

As a sidenote – I am very much looking fwd to implementing some of your garden ideas in my new yard, as it’s three times the size of our old yard so I have room to plant! Once I get rid of the poison ivy, that is…!
gwen zilm says
I used my old old old Cuisinart food processor to make pesto which i froze in ice cube trays. I don’t add the pine nuts or cheese until i had thawed the cubes i need. Sometimes i thaw one or two cubes to add to a vegetable soup or to use as the basis of a salad dressing. Gives a lovely fresh basil summery taste to whatever.

My husband and I entertained a childhood friend of his that he hadn’t seen in a couple of years. Knowing that we were having company sort of unexpectedly we hurried to clean the house and prepare dinner! Since the weather was so beautiful we made a simple dinner that we could enjoy in the sun room or deck. We had roasted chipotle corn, grilled mahi mahi and grilled chicken with peach salsa, Spanish rice, and a crisp garden salad with some balsamic vinaigrette. After eating such a scrumptious dinner we enjoyed each other’s company by reminiscing about the good “ole” days.

Anyway, the 3 days went fast and then I was back at my desk on Tuesday wishing I was still.. nesting. π

I inherited my grandma’s cuisinart! Even though it only works with the “pulse” button, this baby pulses vigorously (thank goodness for the suction-cup feet)!! On Labor Day, this old lady helped me whip up some pesto that was spread on toasted french bread and topped with a slice of homegrown tomato and fresh mozzarella…oh, and served on a small bed of baby arugula. π
Love your blog!
David Lindberg says
Labor Day included too much labor about the house, cleaning, laundry and yard work. The fun part was harvesting the summer bounty of Tomatoes, three colanders full of Lemon Boy, Early Girl, and Sweet Million & Yellow Pear. Picked enough fresh Basil for 12 pints of Pesto. My CuisinArt is a relic from the ’70’s, cracked smoke bowl and only can be turned on using a knife inserted into catch in the back. Every time I use this, I swear I’ll buy a new one, but for now, I’ll hope I win the raffle! Love your blog, keep up the witty work!
Erica Feltner says
Labor Day weekend was a whirlwind of activity spent with my beloved. Every minute was scheduled, it seemed. We had so much to fit in before the end of summer. We moved my daughter into an apartment an hour away, we installed a shower in said apt, we attended Harley Fest in Milwaukee. (Great people watching!) Had dinner with his children at a wonderful hidden supper club, did end of season chores at our respective yards, made time for friends aomewhere in all that and collapsed in a pile just before work on Tuesday. Whew….

My husband and I went up to Idyllwild CA. It’s a lovely mountain community. There was a tropical depression that was swamping Southern California in humidity. We took to the hills and enjoyed a lovely summer thunderstorm instead! It started around 10am and lasted most of the day. It made us not want to go home because the heat wave down the mountain was going to be horrible compared to the glorious rain and rumbles! My poor dogs did not enjoy it as much as we did though. Also, my husband made grilled chicken sandwiches on croissants for lunch! Sadly, they were store bought croissants but they were still tasty! I hope you had a lovely holiday too!

Love our site and your friendly, positive writings with your delicious recipes. Thanks!

Went to the Chatham Fair with the grands. Then church on Sunday and off to Lake Michigan for a reunion. We usually gathered at Ortley Beach in NJ. “Sandy” took the cottage away and after 40 years had to find another place. It was cool, but lovely and the blueberries were plentiful. Did not have time to make your Blueberry Bars, but thought about how good they would be. Thank you for your talent and generous way.

We drove from eastern TN to South Bend IN with a trailer loaded with our daughter’s porch set. We had it for two years because they lived in an apartment and had no room for it. Even the storage locker was full. Now they have a home and we returned it to them. Then we unloaded it, cleaned it, set it up and now will enjoy it for 24 hrs. Played with the grandchildren, took pictures and enjoyed company. Then our son-in-law grilled steaks. A good time was had by all and drove home on Monday. Oh, I forgot, I showed my daughter some pruning techniques too.

I live in north central Brtiish Columbia but somehow our climates and your tips blend together.. Thanks so much Kevin for all your help. Hope to be out in the garden again before winter comes.

My husband and I spent the weeks leading up to Labor Day preparing for each of our three daughters to move into their own places. Two of them moved on Labor Day (that was one big U-Haul truck) and one a few weeks prior. The oldest moved out of state to start her “big girl” job, the middle child moved into an apartment to start graduate school and the youngest is in her own apartment to start her second year of college. We were hoping the nest would empty gradually, but we are proud that our “labor” to parent independent women has paid off in a good way. The family Thanksgiving get together can’t happen soon enough!

Picked tomatoes and canned! I have the first year garden that was more of a potters field (FULL of CLAY), rather than a garden! However, we did ok! We finally got broccoli that didn’t head up until the end of AUGUST, discovered that what I thought was frost on the green tomatoes was actually sun scald, and realized that crookneck summer squash is a waste of space and will use the straight yellow squash next year! Getting ready to start pulling the spent plants, till in the compost, and plant the cover crop! Thanks for all of the great advice!!! π

Beasley takes the Churchill familys part, not only about Morans breach of trust, but about his account of Churchills condition. He gets very angry with Morans idea that Churchill suffered from full depression: Moran misinterpreted Winstons phrase “black dog” as being something special and personal, whereas it was the general term Victorian nannies and, indeed, Dr Johnson used to describe feeling low.
