BLAME IT ON HBO’S airing of “Phil Spector” last Sunday, but I’ve had “oldies” pop songs playing in my head all week. So please forgive me for writing the following multiple-choice quiz, which deals not with Lady Gaga, but with her musical ancestors:
Musical ancestors…like these guys…
And this 15-year-old girl, who wrote and recorded a song that was banned at many radio stations in 1967…
To take the quiz, simply click the button below. No matter how you score, I’ll automatically enter you in a random drawing to win a spaetzle-making gadget. Three of you can win.
Winners and correct answers will be announced on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. So be sure to check back!
How’d you do? Please feel free to post your score — or any thoughts you have — in the comments field below. And if you like the occasional quizzes at A Garden for the House, by all means click the “Like” button!
Confession: I wrote this quiz late last night. It is filled with grammatical errors. Please don’t shoot me.

Couldn’t even make a passing grade on the quiz. Okay, maybe I’m just too young!! Sure don’t get to say that very often anymore!
Diane Kratz says
60%. Ok score I guess for a quiz about the 60’s. Monkees was one of my first albums and i saw Tony Orlando in concert when I was in my teens. I wish I could tell which ones I got right. Made me laugh on the one question,.. butter, cream, milk, LOL.
Darlene says
The Monkeys, Loretta Lynn and the Beattles. Now you are in my era Kevin. :o)
Sue Kinnally Wein says
Gee, I only got a 75%. But I bet I’ll get 100% in spaetzle-making if I win the gadget!
Rosanne Braslow says
This is what I like about your blog… it’s diverse!
Patti P. says
That was fun, but brain-straining at the same time! I got 65% which means I like the music, but don’t remember the details! 🙂
Diane says
80% – not bad.
Would love the gadget – my old wrists get too achy pressing that dough through the pan with the holes in it.
Annie says
85% here….curious about some of the answers! Quizzes are great…you realize how much you really do not know. LOVE the MONKEES!!!!
Thanks for the FUN!!!!
Marjean says
90% – but I graduated high school in 1965 so 60’s music is in my blood!
Cherylann McGuire says
I got 90% – yay!
Sherry says
55%!
Denise says
Whoo-hoo! 100% But I was really straining my brain because I absolutely LOVE spaetzle and am tiring of trying to squeeze it through the small holes of a colander.
Cheryl says
I just embarrassed myself taking this quiz.
Allison K says
Meh–80%….about what I’d expect, having been born in 1965 (although I’m only 28 😉 ).
Karen K says
A poor 45%! I must of been doing something else during the sixties…….
Erin Brady says
Gulp, 50%.
Jeannie says
Wow…from my generation and still only scored 45%! Guess I’ve forgotten more than I remember! Was fun though…and thanks for the chance at a spaetzel maker!
Vicki says
Ugh, 65%.
Carol in Montana says
Haha-proved your quiz required knowledge beyond my years!
Robert Meehan says
Got a 75. Phooey! Thought I’d do better than THAT!!
Georgette Tefoe says
Wow that was a tough one.
Lois says
95% 🙂
Honor says
80%. Guess I did well enough, but as a former overachiever am a bit disappointed with myself. Been a while since I took any kind of quiz. 🙂
Melissa Horton says
60%???? not good.
Vicki says
Given that I only really knew the answers to two questions, I am surprised that I got 45% right! I was only into folk music at that point, and had no time to spend on the rest of it. So be it…. But I would love to be able to make spaetzle!
Lori O'Leary says
This hippie wannabe got 85% and I laughed out loud at question 15!!! Thanks for the “trip” down memory lane 🙂
Dennis R says
I “aced” the test with 100%….but that’s b/c i’m old enough
to remember the very “FIRST” train to Clarksville….
Wilma Tyler Dibelka says
80% … will be interested in seeing what I missed. Lived through that era, but only after living through the big band era (not bad for a 60 year-old, right?). How about a quiz about those times. And is anyone out there interested in old vinyls?
Dan Schubart says
Got 80%. And I lived through all of this stuff. Het! Where did I pt my keys?
Tiffany says
I fugure 75% is reasonably respectable for someone whose mother was born in 1960 🙂
praireicactus says
Only 60% but now Pandora is serenading me while I cook dinner…yea!
Love the oldies but my baby brother is the king of oldies…he still plays
records for me when I go home to visit…it is a totally goofy and wonderful time!
Susan says
85% & this was so much fun! Do this again (no prize necessary:) xo
Cary says
So funny! I am embarrassed to only score 65%! Shame. You are a cutie!
Beverly, zone 6, eastern PA says
50% … Lame !!!!
I was 8 when the Beatles mania hit the US.
I still feel like I am catching up.
Do you know, Williams Sonoma does NOT carry spaetzle makers?
At least their store in the Lehigh Valley does not stock them.
Happy Easter Kevin and company !!
Vicki Clark says
The Monkees, Janice Ian and the Beatles
Cindy says
65%. Ouch. I was born in… er, I was in my teens in the late 60s. I should have known a lot more of the answers. But it was fun — thanks!
Lynne says
I do have rock credits, despite only 55%! I knew Credence Clearwater members when they were still the Golliwogs, and Appaloosa after they went into obscurity. Otherwise I am more of a classical gal.
Karen L. says
65%! Ugh! And I was a teen in the 60’s but I do know I have a poor memory. Plus, although I was a huge Beatles fan (Paul was “my guy” and Ringo was my best friend’s “guy”), I spent more time outside, playing sports in high school, and going down the shore than I did listening to music. Sure hope you grade on a curve or I am in hot water with my folks!!!
Pat Gilbert says
Sheesh, 65%, scouts honor and no googling the answers. Many of these are a little “early” for me and I was more of a folkie than a pop person, but it was a fun quiz just the same! thanks
mushypeas says
75% without second cup of tea! not bad!
Rosemeri says
50% I guess I don’t know that much about 60s music. I was more into folk music and classical music. You do have fun quizzes thought, so keep them coming.
Stephen D Fritz says
Right music but I did no better on the quiz than in high school in the 60’s. Did manage to graduate in the top 95% of my class though.
Susan Nebrick says
wow, l was surprised with a failing grade of 65%. This was my era, graduating High school in 1966. Will anxiously be looking forward to seeing the answers; maybe “over thinking” the answers and changing a few didn’t help. Should have went with my gut answers!
Lori G. says
70% isn’t too bad. I was born in the early 60’s so I don’t remember much about it. But I do love The Beatles.
Mike says
I am proud of you all. I only got 50%. lol.. just a little before my time. thats my excuse.
Kimberly says
You scored 65%! Shameful but if it were 80’s i would have done better.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Kimberly – 80s music quiz coming soon! The Cure, REM, Tears for Fears…love ’em!

Quiz Completed
I’ll publish the correct answers on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. Stay tuned!
You scored 95%!
Man, this was hard lol. I guessed at most of them.
Lourdes Fay says
LOL I scored 35%
It was a guessing game as it was all before my time as well.
cleo jordan says
50% and I was a 60’s teenager! disgusting!!! oh well it did bring back memories though.
Elen says
45%! Growing up before the 60’s and not listening to much music were a disadvantage in this contest. However, I’m sure I can make great spaetzle should I be a winner!
THERESA hAMILTON says
That was a fun quiz!
Kathleen says
Scored a 65 with help from my millennial kids. What fun to take this quiz!
Janice says
50% is not bad. I was a 70’s child, so did a lot of guessing on quiz. It was fun!
deborah says
Never paying attention to names, and guessing I did most answers I think I did a fair job as a 60s kid with a score of 65.
Corby Hackney says
A disappointing 60%. O well. I was there. I should remember them all. It was still fun taking the quiz. I love your blog, it is never a dull moment. Thank you for your giveaways. It is sweet and generous of you. Happy Easter!
OR Suz says
75%! I’m surprised. Fun stuff.
Oh and yes, prize me, thanks!
Tracy says
55%!
Can’t wait to see what questions I got correct.
Arden Brink says
Well, since the score didn’t “matter” for the drawing, I took it as an “open book” quiz (i.e. Googled things I didn’t know) but even so couldn’t find some answers and got 95%. About half of it I just *knew* for sure and the other half, pretty clueless about (hence the Googling.) But it was fun, though — love your giveaways and got all excited about the spaetzle maker after your previous spaetzle post, so keeping my fingers crossed that your random number generator finally generates *my* number. Love your site!
Elizabeth King says
I must have been busy in the 60’s with other things. I scored 55%. Not very good.
Laura Redmond says
I got a 90 and can’t wait to see what I got wrong! Happy Easter Kevin!
Sunny says
I only got 70% 🙁
Kimmer says
wow 85% surprised myself! I’ll do better on the 80’s
linda handlin says
50%
Enid Albat says
Apparently a pretty common score of 60%. Wonder if we missed the same ones. While I graduated high school in 1970 (also nice to see so many posting are my generation) my dad allowed ONLY classical music in the house and my best girlfriend was in the same position. The first time I ever heard any Beetles music is when I managed to get to the theater and see “Hard Day’s Night”…
I would love to have a Spaetzel making device. Then I could put the piece back in the bottom of my pressure canner and know I am making them the right size (the holes just looked closer than a colander. )
Annie B says
Tuesday? We have to wait that loonnnggg? No instant gratification (or lack thereof)? Happy Easter…and beginning of April.
Carla says
65% not bad for somebody who wasn’t born until 1970 🙂
love the quiz idea and all the great info you always provide. I pass your blog on to all my friends. Happy Easter
AmyO says
So I only scored a 60%…….even though I grew up with all that great music. Oh well.
Cheryla says
ohhhh, man, only 65%….had fun though! Love your site, it makes me happy!!!
Lynne Kuntz says
85%..not too shabby…….would love to know what I missed though!! That was way fun…Thanks
Marjie says
Only 65%…I was a busy mom of 5 in that era…guessed at most of the answers, so was surprised I did as well as I did. A quiz about 40s and 50s music would be more up my alley. Love your photos and redo of the home and gardens. M ywonderful mother-in-law taught me how to make spaetzles back in the 50s…we mixed and batch and just cut a portion off the edge of the mixing bowl into boiling, salted water…served usually with pork roast and gravy. YUM…thanks for jogging my memories..
Syl Grant says
95% I loved that, it was so much fun. I hope you do more of these in the future but then again I’m not sure I could do as well if it wasn’t the 60’s.
Lynda B says
Only scored a 55 percent, but fun. I was inspired by your blog last week and ordered a spaetzle maker from Bed Bath and Beyond. Anxious to try and recreate my great grandma’s recipe. Thank you for always having such a wonderful, diverse post. Happy Easter.
Cynna says
Well, I got 55%–I’m not that young, but young enough to not have known enough about music in that period!
Michele says
I got 95% and am wondering which I got wrong. I would have missed a lot of them without the multiple choice format, but most were pretty easy with it. 🙂 I know you said you had typos, and I’m guessing the question about who did “Wild Thing” in the plural was one of them. I always called my son Wild Thing, and would sing the first part of the song to him sometimes because he did, and continues to, make my “heart sing!”
Maggie says
Well, 90%. I would have thought I’d do better than that! I got to meet Peter Noone last summer when he played here!
anita says
Old enough to have done better, but scored 70% only. Enjoyed the quiz, nevertheless. Brought back memories. Loved “At 17”.
Cathy says
50%!!!!!!!!! That’s all I have to say. And I can’t even blame it on being too young!
cecile graven says
80%, but I used google for most questions 😉
Cathy Haynes says
wow, I only got 65%, how sad is that?? lol
Emmialle says
95% pretty proud of myself, I’m a child of the 70.s Great quiz!!
Joanp says
Okay, got them all right but only because I looked up those answers I couldn’t remember. Was surprised I got as many right on my own as I did. But then, these were/are all the greats. Thanks for the fun.
Brenda from Cape Cod says
I got 60%. Was never good at quizzes. Oh well. It was still fun. Thanks
Julie Redlawski says
I got a pitiful 35% but I didn’t know a lot of the song writing info. I would kill it on an 80’s quiz. thanks for the spaetzle offer!
Naomi Shelton says
Oh, geez, such a poor score for someone who lived through those times! Well, I guess I might have been somewhat unconscious during that time– at least not paying attention on a wide level! I loved taking the quiz, tho’. Thanks for the diversion, Kevin.
Devon says
What? Only 90%? I know this a lot better than that! I guess I could have googled those couple I guessed on … 🙂
Michele says
I just looked at your instructions to see when you were picking the winner, and saw your comment, “Please don’t shoot me.” I thought it seemed out of place for you; then I realized that it must be because “you’re only the piano player.” ; -)
Mary B says
75%. Not too shabby for being born in the 60s.
Laurie F says
90%, not bad, couple were pretty hard
Heather says
50%, obviously no google cheating here
Heidi says
I’m sad to say I got 45%. maybe better luck next time!! 🙂
Jacque Perez says
I scored 65%! I should have done better as I have two older sisters who listened to all these bands. I remembered the bands and the songs just not who did what! lol
Jill says
55% for me
