Here’s the printable recipe from my “1950s Peach Cobbler” video that was recently published on YouTube. The cobbler is delicious any time of the year. I make it just as my maternal grandmother did — with canned peaches!

In case you missed it, here’s the video how-to for this golden dessert that our grandmothers (and great-grandmothers!) routinely made in the 1950s. Also included in the video recipe are some memories of my own grandmother, Margaret Thelma DuVaul. I hope you enjoy the episode!

If you love poodle skirts, Elvis Presley, and “I Love Lucy,” then you will probably adore this 1950s Peach Cobbler. Wash it down with a pot of freshly-percolated Folger’s, okay?

1950s Peach Cobbler

This is the cake-like dessert that my grandmother routinely made in the 1950s.
Prep Time5 mins
Cook Time45 mins
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Servings: 8

Ingredients

For the peaches:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick/113g) butter, melted in a 2-quart baking dish
  • 1 29-ounce can sliced yellow peaches, drained

For the batter:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract OR 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup self-rising flour (see note below)

Instructions

  • Center the oven rack; preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Pour the drained peaches over the melted butter. Whisk together the batter ingredients in a bowl. Pour the batter over the peaches.
  • Bake the cobbler in the preheated oven until the top turns golden-brown -- about 45 minutes.

Notes

To make your own self-rising flour: Whisk together 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

I’d like to make this using fresh peaches now and home-canned ones later. Please tell me quantities to fit the recipe. Sounds delicious, by the way.

Hi Patricia – I’d use approximately 4 cups of fresh, sliced peaches. Toss the slices with a little sugar to replicate the canned version. Let me know how the cobbler works out for you!

Hey Kevin can you take the drain juice of the peaches and use half peach juice and half milk.
