Narcissus ‘Winter Sun’/A Giveaway

BY Kevin Lee Jacobs | October 10, 2012 303 Comments

Last updated on October 17th, 2012

Update: Congrats to the winners of the ‘Winter Sun’ giveaway: Paula, comment #142; Bobbie Floyd, comment #12, and Denise in NJ, comment # 41.BECAUSE I LOVE NARCISSUS ‘WINTER SUN’ SO MUCH, and because I think you will, too, I’ve ordered three packages of the bulbs to give away. Who’d like to win this yellow-and-white, April-scented beauty that blooms indoors just 4-6 weeks after planting?

I grow ‘Winter Sun’ every year, planting some in October for Thanksgiving bloom, and others in November for Christmas and New Year’s bloom.  You can plant the bulbs in soil if you wish. I plant mine in attractive bowls filled with pebbles and water. To keep the flowering stems from growing too tall, I give the bulbs a nip of gin. Yes, gin. For pictures and growing-advice, be sure to read my profile of this great plant.

For a chance to win a set of 6 ‘Winter Sun’ bulbs,  just do these two simple things:

1. Subscribe, if you haven’t already, to my weekly email newsletter.

2. In the comments field below, answer this question: Which flowering bulbs do you love most?

Not required, but greatly appreciated: click the Facebook “like” button.

As always, I’ll use the little gadget at Random (dot) org to select 3 winners. The winners will be notified by email.

Enter soon! This drawing expires on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at precisely 11:59 PM EST.

One comment per person, please.

Red spider lilies which remind me of my mother. Years ago when hers would bloom she would bring them to me in a vase to enjoy. I never had any growing in my yard. Then one year after a heavy September rain I was amazed to find their unique blooms high on slender stems in 2 areas of my garden. I don’t know how they got there. Strangely I haven’t seen them since that one time, but I’m hoping they emerge once again.

As I came to New England from Brazil, I was accustomed to being surrounded by beautiful colors and life all year. I really suffer in these long and dreary
winters of New England, so I have cultivated the habit of force blooming bulbs in my home all winter long. I would love to add this narcissus to my winter display of color and fragrance! thank you for being so generous with your knowledge, I always learn so much from your newsletters.

Daffodils are my absolute favorites….any color, any type. I anxiously await their entrance into the landscape in early spring and am somewhat saddened when the last varieties finish blooming. They signal spring and offer us the anticipation of adventures we are about to resume in our gardens. I haven’t “forced” bulbs to grow inside for years, but would love to start again. Right now, I’m trying to get my Christmas cacti to form buds which is also one of my favorite indoor gardening activities this time of year.

On the three acres where I grew up, about two were covered with a plants that was called myrtle with glossy green small leaves and small lavender blue flowers. And midst all this were many thousands of daffodils and narcissus. My sister and I picked them each spring and gave many away to friends and neighbors. Our grandfather also took nice bouquets to the grocery store where he worked and sold them for us for a nickle each. We enjoyed those flowers each year for 45 years. Then the old house was sold. It no longer belongs to us but the flowers still bloom each spring and I so wish I could stop and pick a few. The aroma of narcissus is magical, I can still imagine it to this day.
