1950s Peach Cobbler

This is the cake-like dessert that my grandmother routinely made in the 1950s.

Cook Time45 minutes
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Servings: 8

Ingredients

For the peaches:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick/113g) butter, melted in a 2-quart baking dish
  • 1 29-ounce can sliced yellow peaches, drained

For the batter:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract OR 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup self-rising flour (see note below)

Instructions

  • Center the oven rack; preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Pour the drained peaches over the melted butter. Whisk together the batter ingredients in a bowl. Pour the batter over the peaches.
  • Bake the cobbler in the preheated oven until the top turns golden-brown -- about 45 minutes.

Notes

To make your own self-rising flour: Whisk together 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
