We are reaveling to the Teton Basin, to my husband’s family’s Pioneer area. My husband’s parents honor Memorial Day by decorating all the graves of their local ancestors. This includes not only veterans but others as well. We will end the day with a barbecue with local family members in the same area and those who have also come to celebrate the family. As I reflect on what I learned about the Mexican culture and The Day of the Dead from the wonderful movie “coco” last year I realize Americans do not have a holiday to remember all who have come before us, and how sad I think that is. I realize this may be controversial, but because I remember and honor those who have served on Veterans Day, I am choosing to modify my celebration of Memorial Day to honor all of my family and ancestors who have passed away. ❤️ my years of genealogical research have allowed me to discover and appreciate those who have come before me, how their lives have contributed to who I am today.
Kathrin Weber says

While he sets out tomatoes ~ all heirloom this year, chili peppers (his fave? Wrinkled old Man), cucumbers, and Comtesse de Chambord bean seeds, I have been creating herb gardens in large terra cotta pots on the deck for easy access ~ though we still maintain an in ground herb garden. Looking for a Vietnamese coriander plant or two. A simple weekend for us. It’s the little things at the Sidewalk House.

My plan was to work in the yard since my girls had no competitions to go to. So I hooked up my horse trailer and headed to the rental shop. 1/2 way there someone pulls along side of me and says your cat jumped out of your trailer two lights ago. So now I’m searching and putting up flyers. I am crushed and hoping she’ll find her way home. It was only about 3 miles from our home.

Hi Kevin,
thanks so much for all you share on your website, including lovely give aways.
May all my US neighbours enjoy Memorial Day. Last weekend in Canada, we celebrated (Queen) Victoria Day, a traditional long weekend that seems to mark the start of summer. Our temperatures shifted from the 60’s into the high 70’s and low 80’s mark.
This weekend we are involved in the usual – laundry and cleaning-up. We also have a balcony project on the go with great plans to design a beautiful oasis just beyong the sliding door !
This stand mixer would be great for whipping up a treat to serve with a delicious tea to be enjoyed at The Oasis .
All the best to you and again, thanks for the weekly treat of YOU !

My rhubarb plants were sold to me with the assurance they were red and they looked like they were when they were small, sadly now three years later they are green with a tiny bit of red at the base of the stem. I have tonnes of rhubarb right now so I might try your upside down rhubarb cake that you posted but it will be green, it sounds delicious. I will be spending a quiet Memorial weekend, weeding my raised veggie beds, cleaning horse stalls and bush hogging my pasture. It is in the 90s, way above average for Indiana so inside tasks will also be performed, sadly that is the life of a livestock owner (((Hugs))) to you all and I hope your weekend is festive.

I’ll be working in the yard today. I expanded my garden this year and planted lots of perennials. They need attention till they develop their root system. Also installing a 16″ black wrought iron fence around the perimeter to keep Otto the pup out of the garden. The problem is, when I was digging and preparing the ground to plant Star Gazer lilies, I found a bone that Otto must have buried and he really wants to get in there to retrieve it. I wonder how long it will take to forget about it!

Has it really been almost 10 years?
Yesterday was getting ready for my middles’ prom, hair makeup, dress, flowers (whole kit and caboodle feels like a wedding practice each time we do it, thus one imagines I shall be a pro). Then on to mother’s birthday this afternoon, if the sun comes out it should be a pretty day to cruise the harbor. Finally a collapse on the sofa with a lovely book and remembrance of family who have served. May your weekend be far more peaceful and fun cooking up a storm in the new kitchen.

Planting more tomatoes. I have tons of extras this summer because a store-bought tomato from this winter sprouted tiny tomatolings right inside the tomato! Wasn’t I surprised when I cut into it! I transplanted as many as I could into little pots, babied them along all winter, and now have lots to plant into the garden/containers. The heck if I know what kind of tomatoes they will be?
Kathleen Witt Ryan says

My husband puts out flags in our yard. I wish I could share the photo! We are having brisket with baked beans and green salad, and remembering those who gave their all. When my husband worked at Quantico National Cemetery, he was fond of saying that he was working for the two people who gave their lives for him. Jesus and the veteran. He is himself a veteran, as am I. We are blessed to have served, but we only honor those who died in wartime on this Memorial Day weekend.

Getting the vegetable garden in shape. Planted 2 types of potatoes (red, blue) and 2 more to go. Onion sets and garlic need transplanting into a raised box. My cultivated 150 year old rhubarb plants are gigantic. The raspberry canes need more trimming as well as the blackberry plants. Always lots to do but it is very therapeutic and calming. I especially enjoy sharing the extras with friends and the church’s food pantry. We are staying home and will enjoy a meal together.

Soaking Morning Glory seeds, Sun Flower seeds, etc., etc. I used to have a mixer like this (not a green one — just a plain old regular one), and every year I made cookies and wonderful things as gifts — then, I stopped. A few years ago, maybe more years, I thought I was moving to a lovely island, so I gave it to someone I had considered a friend (note the had considered). Anyway, I never got to the island — the mixer would brighten my kitchen — might brighten me.

Well, my husband’s former co-worker somehow heard we’re backyard beekeepers. Since his kids are learning all about honeybees, yesterday, we gave them all a little tour of our apiary, which included a full hive inspection where they saw first hand all the various elements of a healthy hive. No one got stung! It was a fun day, but i’m glad we have nothing else scheduled for the holiday weekend cause kids, although precious, are exhausting. 🙂

Hi Kevin, it’s a beautiful sunny weekend here in western Oregon, and we have absolutely no plans beyond some grocery shopping. Could go to the parks on a whim, as always. Went to the ocean at Florence on Thursday to beat the possible crowds, did some beach combing and took a ride through the Oregon Dunes. Crazy landscape, very old world. Thanks for the giveaway!

Hello Kevin.
That is so kind of you to have a beautiful green mixer giveaway. It would be more than miraculous if the number picker selected my name. There’s lots of competition for the drawing, that’s for sure. But I’m going to comment “just in case.” I do believe in miracles.
My daughter, son-in-law, and three beautiful local grandchildren are coming to our house on Memorial Day for a cookout. I got flatiron steaks in bourbon sauce, hotdogs, and hamburgers with cheddar cheese on top so everyone can have their preference. Will also make a potato salad. Hope you and Mr. Fox have a wonderful holiday, too. Now, let’s hear it for miracles! Hip hip hurray!

Anne in Vermont zone 4/5 says
Hi Kevin,
As two Brits we have never really got “into” Memorial Day, though we both took our children to parades when they were young and if we had a grandchild nearby, no doubt we would take him. For us, November 11, Remembrance Day holds greater significance. I remember my great aunt who never married, like so many women of her generation, as her “beau” was killed in the trenches in France. So, no parade for us, and no visiting family – Seattle is too far from Vermont, and the Manhattan son is at a wedding in Oakland. Friends are largely with their families so we will do our usual Sunday things together on Monday too. I do hope, though, that you and the Silver Fox find a fun way to remember those fallen in two world wars.
Best, Anne

I live in New Brunswick, Canada and we don’t celebrate Memorial Day this weekend. However, I am spending my weekend helping a Syrian immigrant family start a vegetable garden. Starting small as the shorter growing season than they were used to is creating some learning situations for them. 7 children, ten and under, six of whom all want to help transplant tomatoes, plant onions, put in bean seeds… Fun, fun, fun. I am wishing for some gardening successes for them. Will help monitor, weed, water… during the summer.

Well, on Saturday I was at the Hartford Farmer’s Market before 6 a.m. and there was already a line to get in! Got four perennials. Yesterday it was cold but that didn’t deter us from going to Larson’s in Burlington and White Flower Farm in Morris to get a Blue Billow hydrangea (to replace a very dead groundcover rose) and Sun King Aralia. Today it’s been too cold to plant any of those so I basically just ate dougnuts.

Staying home. We have started the swamp cooler, did yard work and watched the new robot mower work, harvested iris – pale yellow, lavender, white, dark red and black and I will finally make your strawberry soufflé for dessert. I biked the Hiawatha Trail. It is a rails to trail system that starts at the border between Montana and Idaho. The Milwaukee Road went from Chicago to Seattle and when it went defunct the national forest service made it a bike trail. It has 9 tunnels and several trestles with some of the most beautiful vistas around.
We honored veterans and remembered dear departed ones also after the ride.
Maggie Froncek says
Our busy weekend was rearranged to a different version of busy, due a last minute necessary decision for our “Big Dog” to undergo surgery and become a TriPaw on Friday. Hubby was on doggy pain med watch on Sat while I was at work. On Sunday a great friend/neighbor helped us get to our grandson’s 5th birthday party by dog sitting. Our Monday bbq invitation had to be declined due to – you guessed it – staying home with “Big Dog” Duke. But no worries….our amazing friend/neighbor and her family were repaid buy coming to an impromptu bbq at OUR house ….my baby back ribs and home made Orange Creamsickle cheesecake (and a rambuncious game of darts). Hoping that you and your crew had a fantastic weekend!

We really didn’t do anything over the weekend. I did some yardwork on Saturday and when I bent over to pick up the last clump of grass I had dug up, I apparently twisted wrong and sent my back into lockdown! So, I spent most of the rest of the weekend in the bed or on the couch. It really stinks that my body doesn’t think I am as young as my brain does!!
