I wrote about these beefy-but-meatless burgers many moons ago. And yesterday, because I was hungry, I filmed the easy recipe for you! Included in the video is my nifty trick for skillet-toasting a hamburger bun or English muffin. Ready to watch? Click the play arrow:

Meantime, here’s the printable:
Inexpensive and hearty, these bean burgers are perfect for a fast weeknight meal. Feel free to alter the seasonings to suit your taste buds.
Ingredients
- 2 (15.5 oz) cans plain black beans, drained and rinsed under cold water
- 1/4 - 1/3 cup minced red, yellow or white onion
- 1 cup seasoned dried bread crumbs (seasoned gluten-free crumbs will work as well)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Olive oil and butter for frying
- Optional for serving: English muffins, lettuce greens, sliced red onion, and mayonnaise and/or ketchup
Instructions
- Put the drained and rinsed beans in a large bowl. Add the onion, bread crumbs, spices, and egg. Mix with hands, crushing some of the beans as you go. Form the mixture into 4 patties.
- Warm the olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. When the butter melts, add the bean patties, and let them cook until nicely browned on the bottom -- about 5 minutes. Flip the patties over, cover the skillet, and cook until brown and hot -- about 5 minutes.
- Serve on toasted English muffins, along with mayonnaise, lettuce greens, and red onion.

Kevin, since we first saw this recipe when you initially published it, this has become our go-to veggie burger! It is an awesome recipe and I hope others will try it. And it’s so easy!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Tammy – Nice to hear from you!
Elle (nickname) says
FYI you video says to add “red onion” – your recipe says yellow or white onion. No big deal but thought you might want to know.
Mari says
OK Kevin what is your most delicious ketchup recipe?
Shirley Welch says
Kevin, thank you so much for this recipe. I am a vegetarian as well as my granddaughter who lives with me. These look delicious and I will be preparing them for our dinner this evening. Enjoy many of your recipes and prepare them frequently. Thank you again, have a lovely Sunday.
MaryAnne Gartner says
I am drooling on my iPad right now. I can hardly wait to go shopping for the ingredients!
Thanks Kevin!
Grani Frani says
I looked up your ketchup recipe on your site. Looks delish. Will be making it tomorrow(don’t have all the ingredients on hand). I love ketchup and this just might be a healthier version of store bought. Have to try the black bean burgers. They look great. Thank you!!
Johanna says
Thanks this looks delicious and I will try it. I would also be interested in your ketchup recipe.
Debby Stone says
This is my all time favorite of your recipes. I also make it into small “meatballs” and use with spaghetti. The recipe freezes well too. I make up a batch and take it out as I need it. Of course, your ketchup recipe recipe doesn’t hurt it either. That also freezes well.
Marie says
We made these a few times after your post and will have a o add them back to our repertoire. Along with the chicken polpetines. Thank you for such delicious recipes.
Diane says
Sounds delicious! On another note, what must we do to preserve our poinsettias so they will look as beautiful next year?? I live in FL so keep them alive but the leaves are only a fraction of the size as the new ones I buy at Christmastime. Thanks for any tips! (Hope you are still considering adopting another pup to love )

YUM!!

Hi, Kevin — I was so glad to see this video. I’ve made bean burgers in the past and really liked them, BUT I had used my food processor which is one of the things that went away in my recent huge downsizing. So I was really delighted to see this version that just smashed everything together by hand!! Also loved the method for toasting the English muffin — interestingly, I was planning on some burgers today at lunch (have some leftover ground beef mixed with chopped scallion, sun-dried tomato, and bleu cheese that I need to use) and without any buns on hand was thinking of using English muffins. And, YES, would love your ketchup recipe!
Meghan Girroir says
Kevin-I am making these burgers for lunch. I have always been timid about making a bean burger; your video made it look possible. I would love your recipe for homemade ketchup.
I am a novice gardener, and would like to try my hand at an asparagus patch. I am inundated with information. Do you have any suggestions as to which crowns to purchase. and any tips in starting this bed? I live in zone 6b.
Thank you,
I love your posts and videos.
Meg
Gene says
Outstanding recipe. This is my go to bean burger recipe. I’ve tried many, but found this easy recipe to be the best – easiest to make and – outstanding taste. thanks
SUSAN says
The burgers sound great, Kevin. I love your videos. Thanks so much for everything. Susan
Cornelia Vick says
The Bean Burger looks delicious…. Do teach us how to make
ketchup……. Have never even thought about making it. I used to
make mayonnaise for chicken salad long years ago…… Thanks !!
Pearl and Spike says
Cant wait to make these!
Ardelle says
Excellent recipe – black beans, the most used staple in my kitchen – very little red meat in my kitchen. I like the idea of toasting the English muffin with the mayo. Will have them this week.
Thank you once again.
Emiy Delaney says
I love black beans and can’t wait to try the burgers. I canned homemade ketchup many years ago.
Would love to try making yours. Love your videos, its like having you in my kitchen!
Julie Dietz says
Can’t wait to try these. Will use white or yellow onions, thought because red onions are major migraine trigger for my husband. We have tried many commercial vegetarian burgers in the past, but the texture was just….off, at best, and unpleasant at worst.
Dalbir says
Waiting to read your ketchup recipe!
Peggy says
Love the cook book! I’m going to try this burger recipe. Could I bake the black bean burger ?
Thanks again!
Janis says
These look scrumptious. Cannot wait to try them Would really like the homemade ketchup recipe. Thx, Kevin.
Enid says
I love black beans. Looking forward to trying this recipe although I will leave the crushed red pepper out.
I would like the ketchup recipe. Always good to know how to DIY. May decide it’s better not to buy premade.
Sandy Avery says
These look great! We made your English Muffins before so we plan to be ambitious and make both. I am also looking for any help or advice for transforming my lawn on a budget. We tried your boxwood hedge and it was super.
Ginny says
Love black bean burgers. Will definitely try this one. Oh yes that homemade ketchup recipe
Ellie B says
Wow, Kevin. These look delicious. They are going on my list to make soon. I would love to have the ketchup recipe, because I want to regulate the sugar… Thanks, in advance.
Janis Broom says
Wow. Your cooking videos and recipes are so wonderful, Kevin! I have tried several and they have turned out nicely. I have never felt very successful in the kitchen up to now but you are a great teacher, complete with your touches of humor, which totally crack me up. I am empowered to try new things! And I love your gardening advice, too. Thank you, thank you!! I look forward to each new installment. Janis
Jeanne says
I always enjoy your videos. The bean burgers look delicious. BTW, I just gave myself a well earned gift….I ordered your book and can’t wait to dive into it.
Ellen says
Looks great, can’t wait to try the recipe!!

PERFECT!!
Kevin, I was just thinking of bean burgers and BAMM!! You got it.
Thanks.
Lori says
This recipe is wonderful as are all of your recipes. I haven’t seen your cookbook yet, but am looking forward to it.
I would love your ketchup recipe.
Joanne in Zone 6b says
I’ve been making these bean burgers since you first posted the recipe, and as I responded at that time, they are FANTASTIC! So quick, easy, and scrumptious. You’ve also turned me into an English muffin fan, though I haven’t yet tried your recipe for making my own (or homemade ketchup, for that matter, but all in good time…).
Today, though, I have to thank you for your video and the muffin-toasting tip – terrific! I’ll be following it when I next make the bean burgers.
Thanks for all you do to make life more delicious!
Francisca Beaver says
My daughter and I love these. We started making these when the recipe first came out and it’s one of her go-to meals for a college girl on the run. We make extra and just reheat later, delicious!
Cindi Morrison says
These look amazing. I am definitely going to try them this week. I will also forward the recipe to my kids. Thank you!
Allison Hamilton says
I can’t wait to try this, especially the muffins fried in mayo – that sounds heavenly. 🙂
Next time, try Big Al’s “Smoking Hot Paprika” (aka “The Cure”) I sent you. I’ll use it in my version since I use it in everything.
Lots of love to you,
Big Al
Michelle says
Made these burgers this evening. Yumm!! Please post your ketchup recipe, I bet it’s terrific.

Vickie Halteman says
Yes! I want the ketchup recipe.
Mary says
Kevin, I have made your delicious black bean burgers several times. I flash freeze them, then pull one out of the freezer, heat it and arrange it on an English muffin exactly as you recommend (sometimes I’ll add a tomato slice). Love ’em! Another thing I love is your cookbook! All your hard work produced a beautiful book – I hope you sell millions!
Christine says
I have wanted to try this for so long but was afraid it was too complicated. Your video changed all that! I made them that very day and they were the best I’ve ever had! Really, so good! Thanks
Sherry Pace says
These burgers look fabulous! I can’t wait to try them. Simple is good – and much easier than pulling out the food processor. Definitely need the ketchup recipe to finish them off 🙂 Love the Mayo toasting tip, it’s also good to use when putting a bread crumb crust on items to be baked. FYI – Purchased the cookbook in December, haven’t had time to really sit and read it (every time I had time set aside something or someone interrupted) but the pictures are lovely. Keep on cooking and providing such great recipes and gardening tips and ideas. Hugs from Willow Grove PA.
Mary Gagnon says
Kevin,
I just watched the video and will make these tonight. I would love the ketchup recipe. I hope you don’t mind me asking how are you holding up after the loss of Lilly? I wish you all the best. When and if your ready I breed the most amazing Shih Tzus.
Celeste says
Anxious to try this. Your recipes are SOoooo delicious.
Lana says
LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR KETCHUP RECIPE. I LIKE THE VIDEO AND THE ‘BURGER’ MADE ME HUNGRY! SO DINNER MENU SOLVED. THANK YOU.
Julie R says
I just watched your Black Bean Burger video and then watched your Homemade Ketchup video, and enjoyed them both. Those two combined would be so yummy. Thanks for the tip about toasting the English muffins. That is a great idea to put the Black Bean Burger on a English muffin rather than the usual burger bun. As usual, you always give us great recipes to try, Kevin.
Linda says
Can’t wait to try this. It looks sooooo yummy! Do you think it will make a difference if I use seasoned Panko breadcrumbs? I second Emiy Delaney’s comment, “Love your videos, it’s like having you in my kitchen!”
Thank you.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Linda – Seasoned Panko should work out just fine for this recipe. Enjoy!
Geoff says
Kevin are you sure you meant 2 15.5 oz cans of Goya black beans? It seems the cans in the video are smaller then the 15.5 oz cans of Goya that I used? When I followed your recipe it made 8 patties? Either way I’m really looking forward to eating my burgers and having another delicious recipe for the future
Geoff says
I see my mistake (facepalm)
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Geoff – Yes, two 15.5 oz cans. I make these burgers at least once each week. Number of burgers depends on how big you make them — mine are enormous, hence just four.
Cindi Morrison says
I have made these burgers over and over since I first saw them on your blog. They are terrific!!! I make a double batch, fry them all, and keep them in the fridge for a quick go-to meal. I have served them to 3 different batches of friends and given the recipe away many times and EVERYONE loves them. Thank you for my new favorite meatless meal.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Cindi – So happy you like this recipe. Bean burgers rock!
Judy Hines says
Our 9 year old granddaughter announced last year she was a vegetarian! No problem, for her parents because they do not eat much meat, but when she and her two sisters are here in Illinois with us, there is always enough for her to eat w/o meat. Soon they will arrive here for an entire week and I CAN’T WAIT TO MAKE THESE BLACK BEAN BURGERS FOR EVERYONE!! They look luscious.
Valerie says
Mucho thanks for the stellar vege recipe…have book-marked it! Keep those vege. recipes coming..love them! Cheers….Valerie 🙂
Debbie - MountainMama says
I made these last night for the first time and everyone LOVED them!!! I actually prepped them on Sunday, formed the patties, and put them in a sealed container for a quick and easy after-work dinner on Monday. The flavor was spot on, and the texture was fantastic. I served them on English Muffins (not homemade, sorry!) with lettuce, sliced onion, and a chipotle mayo I whipped up. This is going to be a regular menu item in my house from here on in!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Debbie – Thanks for the review! (Chipotle mayo=YUM!)
Patricia says
These are the best burgers. We love them. We cook em, freeze em and reheat and eat em. Perfectly delicious!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Patricia – Thanks so much for posting your review of these veggie burgers. I never thought to freeze them!
Pat says
I’ve been making a bean burger with quinoa for ages but these are so much ‘meatier’. My new go-to recipe. I usually only need two so freeze the uncooked two burgers for another meal. I also like them with a mango/avocado/red onion salsa instead of a bun. Great with your homemade ketchup too. Thanks Kevin.
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Pat – So pleased you like the burgers. Thanks for the review!
Beth Camero says
Oh, dang, we just had these for dinner. REALLY good, way better than the commercial black bean burgers I’ve had. Thanks! PS, because I’m lazy and dislike raw onions, I used onion powder. Also panko crumbs and random spice, mainly cumin and oregano. 🙂 BUT still so good! This will be my go to meatless burger from now on.
Kathy says
Hi Kevin!
Just made the Perfect Black Bean Burgers for dinner. They are absolutely delicious!!! To “LIVE” for, as I like say! Thank you for adding me to your email list, thank you for the delicious fun recipes! Can’t wait to try out another!
You are a breath of fresh air, that we can all use right now. Truly a rare gem!
Kathy
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Kathy – So glad you enjoyed the burgers!
Beth Camero says
We have these at least monthly. Best black bean burgers EVER. We eat them with Outer Aisle cauliflower thins as buns. VERY good. Thanks for all the recipes, Kevin!
Kevin Lee Jacobs says
Hi Beth – I’m so glad! And thanks for the tip regarding Outer Aisle cauliflower thins. I’m enticed!
